SPICY HOT

CAROLINE HOLTZCLAW, CLASS OF 2024

INTERVIEW WITH THE ARTIST

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE WORK YOU CREATED?

CAROLINE: This piece was one of my most random pieces. It was based on a swirly piece that I found on the internet. I also remember doing charcoal paintings in Middle School and really enjoying it.

WHAT DID THE CREATIVE PROCESS ENTAIL?

CAROLINE: This is the first year I don't have access to Pinterest because of the new wifi, so this year I've had to be more creative and original on my own.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS WORK COMPARED TO YOUR OTHER PIECES?

CAROLINE: Before this piece, I hadn't really done a piece with only black and white and small amounts of color, so I'd say this piece is different from the rest.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU LOVE ABOUT CREATING ART?

CAROLINE: I like that I get to combine getting to use my hands. I like having a break with my mind and just getting to draw and let my mind wander.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE?

CAROLINE: I would just say it’s relaxing. I get to feel like I'm doing something tactile without having to think about it.

DOES THIS PIECE AFFECT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

CAROLINE:  Yes, this is the first piece where I acted randomly and drew whatever was in my head. Since then, I've done a little more of that.
