LOVE IS NOT A WEAKNESS

CAROLINE HUNT, CLASS OF 2024

love is not a weakness

i count steps as i walk

to each place during

my day

but i lose count when i

walk past

you

i count the times

you smile

at me

but i lose count

soon after

love is not a weakness

but can bring out

weakness in each of us

as we become vulnerable

in that delicious pain of suffering

love is not a weakness

but shows human strength

to return and return and return to

that same drug that hurt us the last

time

that drug is love

but that drug is deliciously

sinful and painful and romantic and

comforting

because everyone is feeling

that

same

deliciousness

INTERVIEW WITH THE WRITER

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE WORK YOU CREATED?

CAROLINE: I was watching a show about a priest. The show is called "Essex Serpent" and it is about the struggle between reason and faith and the "humanness" of emotion.

WHAT DID THE CREATIVE PROCESS ENTAIL?

CAROLINE: In poetry first semester, one of the units was poetry and love, and I just decided to write about love because I was inspired by the poems we read in class.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THIS WORK COMPARED TO YOUR OTHER PIECES?

CAROLINE: I have not written a lot of poetry, but normally I like rhyme, but this one doesn't rhyme. It also was kind of more about a personal experience that I had, whereas the other poems that I've written were about other topics that I had not really experienced yet.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU LOVE ABOUT WRITING?

CAROLINE: When it comes to writing novels and stories, as well as poetry, it's a place for me to write about things that fascinate me or experiences I have on a daily basis. Poetry is probably one of my favorite ways to talk about emotion, whereas, with novels and stories, I often go to things that fascinate me in History or Science.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE?

CAROLINE: The ability to share my story in a way that conveys more than just events, but the emotion behind them. Until I had Mrs. Love's poetry class, I hadn't really thought about writing and creating stories for poetry. It inspired me to write about the emotions that I felt.

DOES THIS PIECE AFFECT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

CAROLINE: Not exactly, but I do feel more confident in my creative writing ability and more comfortable sharing that writing. It did make me realize that I can talk more about like the raw emotions of humanity.
