KATIE: WHAT IS THE THESIS OF YOUR PORTFOLIO?
AFIFA: How you can incorporate and become aware of parts of your culture in your everyday life: My journey as a Pakistani-American
KATIE: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CHOOSE THIS THEME?
AFIFA: Well, it's a theme about my personal exploration with my identity as a American Pakistani American, specifically as a Chitrali. I have always really wanted to show my heritage and my culture, so I try to do that in every chance I get. So I chose that this theme not only to share [my culture], but to show other people, like other like children immigrants or other people who have have come into a new places, that they can find their own culture, their [own] identity, and the beauty of the new creation that you are with the changes that you go through.

KATIE: WHAT IS THE MESSAGE YOU WANT TO CONVEY WITH YOUR ART TO YOUR VIEWERS?
AFIFA: Well, [I want it to] show people how you can appreciate your culture, your identity, even if you don't have multiple cultures or you don't come from multiple backgrounds, you can still see the beauty in what you have and notice what's so particular about something to you and even everyday things.
KATIE: WHAT ARTISTS INSPIRE YOU?
AFIFA: I have one friend at SAIC right now, and she really delves in work with her own heritage as a Mexican American. Her work is really interesting because it plays on [childhood]--different from me where I sort of like to show aspects of one's life that is tinted by like culture or their background heritage--but hers sort of talks about her childhood as a Mexican American. Yea hshe is really cool, her artwork is really encaptivating.

KATIE: WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON OR PLANNING TO CREATE?
AFIFA: Right now I'm working on a diptych with my new film camera that I got, and it's meant to show sort the dualities between certain aspects of being Chitrali and how that translates into a Western society. There are some [parts of my culture] that are just normal and just every day news for us, but [for] a Western society, it may seem a little confusing---- and after assimilating into a different society, it becomes confusing for us as well, I guess you could say. Should you choose to care about [what people think]? Some people don't. [For] some people, you know, it could mean something to someone.
KATIE: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WANTING TO TAKE AP ART IN THE FUTURE?
AFIFA: I would say it's pretty fun. I enjoy it. I mean, I'm specifically doing photography, so it's not as time consuming for me, and it's not as intensive. I would say even if you have an inkling of wanting to do it, but, you know, you are a little worried because maybe your medium is different, or maybe, you know, you don't have as much experience--I would say just talk to Mrs. Fletcher about it! She's always there, she's really supportive, and there's always opportunities to work with new mediums and experiment with them.
