Young Voices - the Largest Choir in the World!

Young Voices 2024.mp4

On Friday, a spirited group of 32 students from Year 4 to 6 represented our school along with over 5000 at the unforgettable Young Voices event held at Wembley Stadium. Young Voices provides a unique opportunity for children to perform alongside renowned artists, fostering self-belief, motivation, confidence, and teamwork – qualities that are truly invaluable!

Our children not only enjoyed the health benefits of singing, including focused breathing exercises, but also experienced the joy of performing with their schoolmates. The concert, a culmination of hard work since September, showcased their dedication to learning over 10 songs by heart, complete with choreography.

A huge thank you is extended to the staff who attended, contributing to the success of this memorable event. A special shout-out to Miss Bhanderi for her outstanding commitment, time, and effort in organising and running the rehearsals, bringing this exceptional event to life for our children!

We are immensely proud of our pupils, whose impeccable behaviour at the event reflects the values of St Mary's. Take a glimpse at the event through the photographs below to capture the essence of this musical celebration.

Congratulations to all involved in making this a memorable experience for our students!

Year 2's Towering Adventure: Exploring London's Rich History at the Tower of London!

On Tuesday we visited the Tower of London as part of our London topic. First we took part in a workshop on the Great Fire, with Thomas, an actor from the Tower.  Next we toured the White Tower which holds the armoury and looked at the armour from kings such as Henry VIII, before exploring the stunning Crown Jewels. We finished the day walking along the ramparts where we could see the view of modern London in contrast to the ancient buildings of theTower.

We had a fantastic day, a huge thank you to all the parents who accompanied us.

Wellbeing Week

Throughout the week we will remind the children of our 5 ways to Wellbeing; Learn, Take Notice, Connect, Be active, Give.

Monday 5th February – Mindfulness Monday

We will launch the week with a range of mindfulness activities. Our key message for these activities is to teach the children how to be more present in the moment to connect with themselves and the world around us. We will practise these mindfulness activities throughout the week.

Tuesday 6th February – Technology Tuesday

To celebrate Safer Internet Day, we will be taking parking in activities that help us manage, influence and navigate changes online. In their classes, children will explore, listen to stories, and discuss how what we can do online has changed and what we can do in response to future change. We will reflect on how to keep ourselves safe online by knowing how to use our technology appropriately.

Wednesday 7th February -  Walking Wednesday

Throughout the week we will be encouraging the school community to walk, scoot or ride to school to support their wellbeing. Being active and getting some exercise in the morning before arriving at school will help set kids up for a positive day; improving focus and concentration, and instilling a sense of physical and mental wellbeing. We hope parents will support their children by choosing to travel to school in an active way. This could include parking at Tesco’s if you live too far to walk the entire journey.  There will be a class competition to see who can take the most active journeys.

Thursday 8th February – Travel and Transport Thursday

Children will look at the issues concerning walking along pavements and crossing roads. EYFS, KS1 and Year 3 will take part in activities in the KS1 playground. Year 4-6 will practise crossing the road safely in pairs (with adult supervision). We are looking for parent volunteers who can help us run these sessions safely. If you are able to support please email admin@stmarys698.herts.sch.uk by Monday 5th February.

Friday 9th February

Children will create a wellbeing shield reflecting the 5 Ways to Wellbeing to display in class.

We will also be setting a safety in the home bonus homework task. This will be a great opportunity for families to discuss safety issues at home.  We look forward to a fantastic week.

Reading in School

Please keep Wednesday 13th March - 09:00 - 10:00 free to find out why reading fluency is an important aspect for all children to master.

Reading is at the core of our curriculum, and to further support the reading experience, we are actively working on having more adults in school to listen to our children read. To facilitate this, we require children to have their reading book and reading record in their bags daily. While book changes will continue as before, this ensures flexibility for adults to hear children read in school.

If you have any spare time to listen to our children reading, we would love to hear from you.  Please email Mrs Palmer to let us know your availability.

Measles cases in the UK have been rising since November 2023

Measles cases in the UK have been rising since November 2023. While Hertfordshire has no outbreaks at the moment, we are close to London and the West Midlands where there has been a large rise in cases. The UK Health Security Agency has declared the increase in cases of measles a national incident (19 January 2024). There is the potential for cases and outbreaks in Hertfordshire as uptake of the Measles Vaccination (MMR) in the county is lower than recommended.

Measles is a highly infectious viral disease that can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences. Measles spreads quickly from person to person, especially in schools. Spending more than 15 minutes in direct contact with someone infected with measles is sufficient to transmit the virus. A child with measles will infect almost all unprotected children they have contact with.

Measles is spread through coughing and sneezing, close personal contact or direct contact with infected nasal or throat secretions. For more information about measles and the symptoms, see Measles - NHS (www.nhs.uk)

Community News

We would love to hear and share news regarding the activities and accomplishments of our children outside of the school environment, as well as updates on noteworthy contributions or events within our parent body and the broader local community.

Please submit all relevant information to Mrs Palmer at admin@stmarys698.herts.sch.uk. Your contributions will not only serve to highlight the diverse talents within our community but will also contribute to the collective narrative that shapes the identity of St Mary's.
