Aspiring, nurturing, flourishing;

Aspiring, nurturing, flourishing;
together shining a light
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Ephesians 4:32
This week in Collective Worship, the children explored our value of Compassion through the theme “Being a Good Neighbour.”
We began by reflecting on the Bible story of The Wedding at Cana, Jesus’ first miracle, where He quietly helped a family in need and protected them from embarrassment. This helped the children see that compassion often looks like noticing when someone needs help and choosing to step in with kindness.
We also linked this message to Remembrance, thinking about people whose courage and care made a difference to others during times of conflict. The children learned about Sir Nicholas Winton, who rescued 669 Jewish children from Czechoslovakia before the Second World War. His actions showed the difference one person can make when they decide to help their neighbours, even those they have never met.
Throughout the week, we have been reflecting on our big question:
“How can I be helpful to others?”
Children have been encouraged to think about small, everyday ways they can show compassion and help others in school, at home, and in the wider community.
There are lots more dates to add to the calendar but we wanted to get these to you as soon as possible to put into your dairies...

Shining a Light on Enrichment at St Mary’s
The recent national curriculum review has highlighted the importance of enrichment - ensuring that children’s education goes beyond classroom learning to develop the whole child. At St Mary’s, this is already at the heart of what we do. Enrichment is not an add-on; it is part of how we help every child to 'aspire, nurture and flourish; together shining our light'.
We believe that every child should experience learning that excites, inspires and deepens understanding of the world around them. Our approach to enrichment sits proudly across five key areas:
Enriching our Curriculum – At St Mary’s, every subject is designed to be knowledge-rich, inspiring curiosity, creativity and a love of learning. Our curriculum encourages children to explore, question and make meaningful connections across their subjects. We also enrich learning through half-termly themed weeks, where the whole school focuses on a shared idea or concept. These weeks allow children to investigate big questions, work collaboratively, experience enrichment activities and celebrate their learning in memorable ways. From Year 1, children learn Spanish, helping them develop early language skills and an appreciation of global culture. From Year 2, all children have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, building confidence, expression and enjoyment of the arts.
Afterschool Enrichment Clubs – From sport and music to coding and creative arts, our clubs provide children with opportunities to discover new interests, develop skills and build confidence outside of the classroom. Our clubs change each term to give children a wide variety of opportunities.
Trips and Visitors – We know how powerful real-world experiences can be. Visits and visitors bring learning to life, build cultural capital and help children make meaningful links with their community and the wider world.
Leadership Skills – Whether through the School Council, Eco Team, House Captains or Play Leaders, our children learn to take responsibility, make decisions and work collaboratively — key elements of personal development and citizenship. Because we view the development of these skills as such an important life lesson, every Year 6 pupil holds a Position of Responsibility, giving all children the opportunity to contribute actively to school life and lead by example.
The St Mary’s Changemaker Project – Rooted in our Christian vision and inspired by Matthew 5:13–16, this project helps children recognise that they can make a difference. Our changemakers take action in their school, community and world - shining their light to bring about positive change.
As the national conversation around enrichment continues, we are proud that St Mary’s already champions these principles every day. We will keep refining and expanding our offer so that every child leaves us with rich experiences, lasting memories and the confidence to use their gifts for good.
Due to the freezing weather this week, our Three-Legged Sponsored Walk has been moved to Monday 24th November.
This event will raise money for two important causes:
Half of the money raised will go to Children in Need, supporting children and families across the UK.
The other half will go towards purchasing a new set of Chromebooks for St Mary’s.
Our goal is to raise £2,000. Reaching this target will allow us to buy an additional set of Chromebooks, to be used in the following way:
One set stored in the KS1 area
One set shared between Years 4 and 6
One set shared between Years 3 and 5
This will make a significant difference to the children’s access to technology across the school.
If we do not reach the full amount through the sponsored walk, we will continue fundraising at our Christmas Market on Saturday 6th December, where all remaining proceeds will go towards meeting this target.
Thank you for your generosity and support - together we can make a real difference for our children and our wider community.
Our Christmas Raffle tickets will be sent home later this week. We have an incredible selection of prizes on offer this year — you can see the full list on the front of the tickets!
A huge thank you to everyone who has donated prizes so generously. Your support makes such a difference, and we are extremely grateful.
Please do share the raffle widely with friends, family, neighbours and colleagues. Spreading the word in workplaces and community groups helps us raise even more for the children.
Good luck to everyone taking part!
Reception 2026 Tours
We’re now welcoming prospective parents for our Reception 2026 tours. If you know families in the local area with children starting school next September, please do spread the word about St Mary’s! Our tours are a wonderful opportunity to see our school in action, meet the team, and experience our caring, values-driven environment. Families can book a visit through the school office.
Parent Courses
Please find below the Autumn Term free online parenting groups for parents and carers, funded by Herts County Council for parents/carers who live in Hertfordshire or who have a child attending a Hertfordshire school.
Please see below the latest DSPL9 Newsletter for parents, which includes a wide range of opportunities for support. There are coffee mornings, workshops (both in person and online), and a variety of support groups available to access.
If you would like any further information or guidance about what’s on offer, please speak to Mrs Budd, who will be happy to help.
House Points
This year, children will continue to earn House Points to fill their house team's bucket. Each week, the house with the most points will be awarded four points, the second place will receive three points, and so on. At the end of each term, the winning house will enjoy a non-uniform day as a special reward for their efforts.

Bringing History to Life: Year 6 Visit the Imperial War Museum
Year 6 enjoyed an exciting trip to the Imperial War Museum, where they explored the First and Second World War galleries. We were able to see real artefacts such as uniforms, medals, equipment and personal belongings that helped bring their our learning from school to life. It was incredible to learn about what life was like for soldiers in the trenches, how people coped on the Home Front, and the experiences of evacuees during WWII. Our favourite part was the trench we could walk through to feel what it would have been like to live and fight all day every day in such a small and dirty place! The visit helped them deepen their understanding of both wars and gave them a powerful sense of the real stories behind the history they have been studying.
Year 2’s Fantastic Adventure in London!
This week, our Year 2 children had an unforgettable time exploring The Golden Hinde in London — the remarkable ship sailed by Sir Francis Drake during his circumnavigation of the globe from 1577 to 1580.
The pupils discovered why Drake’s expedition became so famous, tried their hands at firing a cannon, and even learnt how sailors in the 1500s would raise and lower an anchor. It was a brilliant mix of history, adventure, and hands-on learning!
A wonderful day full of excitement!
Reception’s Wonderful Day at Odds Farm
Reception had a fantastic day at Odds Farm, filled with hands-on learning and plenty of excitement. The children loved getting close to the animals — petting the bunnies, feeding the goats and sheep, and watching Moomin the cow being milked. A real highlight was meeting 11 tiny piglets, only nine days old!
Throughout the day, the children explored lots of big questions linked to their learning, including:
What is a baby bunny called?
What is a daddy pig called?
It was a brilliant day full of curiosity, new experiences and joyful discovery. The children represented St Mary’s beautifully and came away buzzing with everything they had learned.
Year 5 Experience the Magic of the West End
Year 5 enjoyed an unforgettable trip to London’s West End to see Starlight Express — an incredible musical performed entirely on roller skates! This visit is part of our commitment to giving every child the chance to experience a professional theatre production, enriching their cultural capital and widening their understanding of the arts.
Before the show, we talked about theatre etiquette and how to be respectful, attentive audience members. The children took this to heart and represented St Mary’s beautifully.
A lovely moment came when the cast performed a Blues-inspired song (Poppa's Blues). As Year 5 have been learning about Blues music in their Music lessons, they immediately recognised the style and even tapped out the rhythm quietly - a wonderful example of learning coming to life.
The children were exceptionally well behaved, enthusiastic and engaged throughout. It was a fantastic experience that they will remember for a long time.
