Aspiring, nurturing, flourishing;

Aspiring, nurturing, flourishing;
together shining a light
“Let your light shine before others.”
Matthew 5:16
It has been another busy and inspiring week at St Mary’s. Building on our work from last week, we have been developing a deeper focus on ourselves through our Big Question: “Who am I?” The children have been encouraged to think carefully about what they enjoy in their everyday lives, while also trying new things to help them understand themselves better.
Linked to our value of Friendship, over this half term we are considering three important areas:
Being a good friend to ourselves – recognising our own strengths and learning how to look after our wellbeing.
Being a good friend with each other – showing kindness, patience and support in our relationships.
Being a good friend with the world – caring for the environment and the community around us.
This also links closely with our St Mary's Changemaker Project. Please spend some time with your child exploring the four different activities within the project and supporting them with one of these. This week, the children will be coming together in their classes to share what they have been working on and how they are moving their chosen activity forward. We are looking forward to sharing children's progress next week.
There are lots more dates to add to the calendar but we wanted to get these to you as soon as possible to put into your dairies...

INSET Days and Trust Development Days
INSET and Trust Development Days (in red, light blue and purple) are days children are not in school. These are important training days for staff to enhance their skills, knowledge, and collaboration across the school and Trust. They ensure we deliver the best possible education for our children.
Attendance - School Time is not Holiday Time
At St Mary’s we want every child to aspire, be nurtured, and flourish - shining their light every day. That can only happen when children are in school, on time, every day.
Recently, we have seen an increase in requests for term-time holidays, which is unacceptable. Children are in school for just 190 days each year, leaving 170 other days available for family holidays. While I fully appreciate that travel is more expensive outside term time, it remains a parent’s legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school.
When a child takes time out of school, it not only affects their own progress but also impacts the rest of the class. Missed learning has to be caught up, which places additional pressure on teachers and can divert attention away from other children’s learning experiences. In short: absence harms everyone’s education.
The Department for Education’s 2024 attendance guidance makes attendance and punctuality a national priority. Schools must have clear rules, and parents must ensure children attend regularly and arrive on time. From November 2025, the new Ofsted Inspection Framework will include Attendance & Behaviour as a separate graded judgement. Our school’s inspection outcome will be directly influenced by how well our children attend school and how punctual they are.
What you need to know:
📌 Holidays during term time will not be authorised.
📌 Unauthorised absences can lead to a Fixed Penalty Notice (fine) issued by the Local Authority. These can only be issued twice — on the third occasion, parents will automatically receive a court summons.
📌 Just two weeks off school drops attendance below 90% – this is classed as persistent absence.
📌 Being late counts too. Our school day begins at 8:45am (soft start from 8:35). Arriving late means lost learning time and disrupted routines.
Why this matters:
Every missed day or late arrival means gaps in reading, writing, maths and more.
Children lose valuable friendships, social opportunities and daily routines that help them feel secure.
Attendance and punctuality are not only about individual progress — they directly affect our school’s Ofsted outcome. From November 2025, Attendance & Behaviour will be a separate graded judgement under the new Ofsted framework.
Please support us by:
✅ Booking holidays only in official school breaks.
✅ Ensuring your child arrives by 8:45am at the latest every morning, ready to shine.
Every school day counts. Every minute counts.
Movie Night
We are very excited to invite the children to our Movie Night on Thursday 25th September, from 3:15–5:15pm.
This event is extra special as it is being organised by our two new Year 6 Charity Ambassadors, Amber and Tilly. This is a brand-new position of responsibility at St Mary’s, and we are delighted to see them take the lead in their first project.
Amber and Tilly carried out a survey across Years 1–6, and three films came out as the most popular choices:
The Lego Movie
The Greatest Showman
Paddington
All three films will be shown at our Movie Night, and children can choose which one they would like to watch.
Half of the money raised will go to the local charity Playskill, and the other half will go back into school for our different councils to decide how it should be spent.
Please sign up via School Gateway and indicate which film your child would like to attend. We hope you will support our two wonderful Charity Ambassadors in this exciting event.
All children in Years 1 - 6 will celebrate Harvest at St Mary's Church on Wednesday 1st October 2025.
Pupils (Years 1-6 only) to arrive at Church between 08.50 and 08.55am. Please take your child to the back of the Church - the Hall entrance where there will be a specific place for each year group to leave their coat and bag, rather than taking into the Church with them. Please let your child know that no water bottles will be needed as the service will last for about 30 minutes only. If you are able to help us with the walk back to school, please let Mrs Palmer know.
Year 6 are leading prayers and the drama. All are welcome to attend!
This is a SMART occasion when our children get the opportunity to wear their smart uniform. All children in Years 1 - 6 wear shirts and ties please.
St Mary's families do give donations for those who need them in our community. All donations to be brought to Church. Please see below:

Pupil Leadership at St Mary's
Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing you to our different Pupil Leadership Teams.
At St Mary’s, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn about leadership, which is why each Year 6 pupil holds a position of responsibility. Leadership and responsibility are vital components of our enrichment programme, and our Year 6 pupils take on a variety of roles, including Head and Deputy positions, Reading Ambassadors, Digital Leaders, and House Captains.
Leadership is not just for Year 6. We encourage children across the whole school to take on responsibilities and have their voices heard through the School Council, Eco Council, Ethos Council and Sports Council. These groups play an important part in shaping school life and giving children the chance to contribute to our community.
We look forward to sharing more about our young leaders in the coming weeks and celebrating the positive impact they have across our school.

House Points
This year, children will continue to earn House Points to fill their house team's bucket. Each week, the house with the most points will be awarded four points, the second place will receive three points, and so on. At the end of each term, the winning house will enjoy a non-uniform day as a special reward for their efforts.

🌟 Year 4 – Exploring the Earth and Volcanoes 🌟
Year 4 have been busy geographers already this half term! As part of their topic, the children have been learning about the layers of the Earth and how our planet is structured beneath the surface. To help them understand this, they used playdough to build models of the Earth’s layers, carefully shaping and labelling the crust, mantle, outer core and inner core.
They have also explored the fascinating world of volcanoes and discovered how and why they erupt. To bring their learning to life, the children created their very own volcano models and had lots of fun watching them erupt!
The excitement and curiosity in Year 4’s classroom has been fantastic to see – we are so proud of the way they are aspiring, nurturing their knowledge, and flourishing as geographers.
🌟 Year 1 – Tech Explorers🌟
Year 1 have been busy building their computing skills this week. The children have been practising how to locate letters on a Chromebook keyboard and even had a go at typing their own names. They also explored the question “What is technology?” by sorting items into technology and not technology.
Next week brings an exciting challenge as the children begin to log into the Chromebooks using their very own username and password!
🌟 This week in our PE Lessons 🌟
Across the school in PE lessons, pupils have been working hard on their Health and Fitness learning journeys. They have been discovering how exercise helps to keep bodies strong and minds healthy. Through fun games and activities, they have explored different ways to move, stretch, and build stamina. It has been fantastic to see everyone's enthusiasm and energy as they learn how to stay healthy and active.
