Scholarship

The Model

The Cultivating Critically Conscious Educators Model is an interdisciplinary conceptual model for developing teachers committed to social justice for students historically marginalized in schools and society. This model draws from the established works of scholars across disciplines. Read about the principles and theories this model is informed by.

The Research

The CCCE model evolved through Dr. Broughton's work with pre-service and in-service teachers. Through imploring anti-colonizing methods such as  participatory action research and transformative interviewing, we come to an understanding of the lived experiences of teachers.

The Practice

Emerging from Freire’s (1970) Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the concept of critical consciousness was originally intended as a teaching approach to empower students to question authority and engage in actively overthrowing systemic oppression of racism and classism. Read about how teacher educators, teachers, and students practice the CCCE model.
