Supplies

Each day students will need the textbook, notebook, pencil, grading pen, assignment book and any assignment due for class. Pencils should be sharpened at the beginning of class. Students may use hand held pencils sharpeners (Shavings go in the trash!). Mechanical pencils are fine.

Classwork

Students will be expected to take notes and do practice problems in class. This must be done at the time I am assigning it and can not be made up later. Students will have daily warm ups, in class practice and review assignments. These should be completed during class time. If not completed during class, most assignments will need to be completed at home. Late assignments will only receive partial credit.

Ixl

Students will receive full credit for ixl assignments completed on time to a Smart Score of 80.

Khan Academy

Khan academy assignments will include a video example and a practice set. Students should watch the video and may redo the practice set until they get full credit on the questions.

Homework

Homework should be done in the student’s notebook (or in the paperback textbooks)and should include the date and page number . Students will have homework most days but not all homework will be written.

Students will receive full credit for homework if all problems are attempted, work is shown and assignment is completed on time. Homework will be accepted one day late for partial credit. Habitually late homework will result in an email home.

Assessments

Tests are generally given at the end of chapters. The test dates are posted approximately one week in advance and students are reminded throughout the week preceding the upcoming test. The day before a test is a review day in class and the homework will be to study for the test. Missed problems should be corrected on separate paper and stapled to the front of the test. You must show work. I will give partial credit (usually ¼ credit) for corrected test corrections.

Quizzes are generally mid-chapter. Students may use notes, books and homework as reference for quizzes. Quizzes should be corrected on a separate sheet of paper and stapled to the front of the quiz. I will give half credit back for quiz corrections (if the problem was worth 2 points, a correction would be worth 1).

Projects are assigned periodically and all instructions will be given at the time it is assigned. Projects will be started in class but may need to be completed at home.

Extra Credit

Extra credit opportunities are provided in the form of assigned classwide extra credit and corrections. Individual extra credit assignments will not be assigned or accepted.

Grades

Grades will be based on class work, homework, quizzes, tests and projects.

30% Tests and Projects

15% Quizzes

10%-Homework

45%-Classwork

Behavior/Discipline

Students are expected to follow the behavior guidelines set forth in the Student Handbook. Failure to follow behavior guidelines will result in the child being spoken to, given a “break”, lunch detention, or parental contact depending on the circumstances.

8th Grade Math Placements

We have two course options for eighth grade math, Pre Algebra and Algebra 1. Students will be placed children into one of the two (2) courses based on the following guidelines:

Algebra 1 Placement:

Students earn placement in the Algebra I class by fulfilling the following requirements:

  • Earning at least 3 As and no Cs on 7th grade report card for math.

  • Earning an NPR (National Percentile Ranking) of 75 or higher on the End of Year Math Map Test .

  • Score at the algebra level on the end of year Algebra Placement Test .

Students who earn admittance to this class will receive instruction based on the ADW standards recommended for Algebra I. Students may still be required to “test-out” of Algebra I in various ADW high schools. Check with individual ADW High Schools for more information about 9th grade math placement.

Pre Algebra Placement:

All students who do not meet the requirements for Algebra I will be placed in Pre-Algebra.

which follows the ADW Pre Algebra standards recommended for 8th grade.
