March 10, 2023

This week:

● We learned the story of Jesus feeding 5000 and the 6th through 10th Stations of the Cross.

● In math, we worked on more addition math strategies. We are working on building fluency with number pairs that make 10 as well as double facts It would be great to practice these math facts, if needed.

● In language arts, again we concentrated on vowels. We focused on long i and short i. We also worked with the heart words: said, down, now. The students did a fantastic job on their encoding/spelling test.

● We did a literary analysis of Pinkalicious. We retold the story using pictures. We summarized the main idea of the story by completing “somebody/wanted/but/so/then”.

● In Social Studies, we continued to learn about the contribution of women in history. We learned about Temple Grandin, the artist Yayoi Kusama, activist Malala Yousafzai, Disney artist Mary Blair and primatologist Jane Goodall. This week, the children really took an interest in the artists.

● We received a doughnut treat for winning the primary door decorating contest for Catholic Schools Week. (I will post pictures).

Announcements and Reminders:

● Many students are forgetting their water bottles on a daily basis. Starting on Tuesday, students will use the fountain if they do not have water bottles.

● March 13-No School-ADW Spring Collaboration Day

● March 15-School-wide S.E.L. Day (social emotional learning)-KIndergarten will focus on relationship skills. Our class theme for the day will be Teamwork Makes the Dream Work. We will play cooperative games, work on cooperative projects, and also participate in some team-building activities. For the team-building activities, it would be great if students could dress in their “team color” This is completely optional. Here will be the teams for SEL Day:

○ Yellow-Obinna, Devyn, Gavin, Kelsey, Eleanor

Happy Sunday.

What a wonderful Catholic Schools’ Week we had. This week was filled with special events that excited the children and made them aware that they are a part of a exceptional community.

This week:

In religion, we learned what it means to be student at a Catholic school. We went to a school-wide mass with our 4th grade buddies. We colored pictures to thank our parents for sending us to a Catholic School. We dressed in fun themes and played Bingo in the Makerspace. While we had some “winners”, we all demonstrated good sportsmanship and left with a prize.
In math, we continued skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. We worked with and wrote numbers to 100. We started our unit on comparing sets/numbers.
In language arts, we continued working on encoding (spelling) and decoding (reading) CVC words, as well as reading our heart words. Our new heart words this week are all, me, and with.
We read two versions of The Little Red Hen. We visualized, retold the stories using pictures, and made predictions. We also compared the characters and events. We gave our opinion as to which was best and why.
In science we finished up our weather unit. We did an experiment with wind force.

Tuesday, February 7-100th Day Celebration-Please review the 100th Day document posted here in Bloomz. Students can wear their 100th Day shirts or bring in 100 objects.
Tuesday, February 14th-Valentine’s Day Party-Students will have a card exchange. PLEASE SEND VALENTINE CARDS FOR CLASSMATES ON THIS DAY. There are 21 students. Please do not write TO (classmate name) or address the outside of the envelopes. This will make distribution quicker. Also, due to allergies, please do not put any unwrapped candy, such as conversation hearts inside.
Thank you to all of the parents who (very quickly) signed up to provide items for the 100th Day and Valentine’s Day. Thank you, too, to Obinna’s and Sophia’s mom for their help with the Valentine’s Day party.

Hello!

We are closing in on our Christmas break. Just 1½ days to go! I know that the children are excited, and to be honest, so am I. Christmas is a beautiful time spend time with family and friends as well as to thank God for His most precious gift.

This will be the last update for 2022 and I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for making these first 75 days of school amazing!

This week:

We learned about the Christmas story. We sang songs about Baby Jesus and Advent. I will try to post one on Bloomz.
In math, we continued working on teen numbers and reviewed previously taught concepts.
In language arts, we continued to work with letters, sounds and words from previous weeks.
This week, we learned about the Christmas customs and traditions of England, Sweden, Germany, the Philippines, and Australia. We coded Beebots in the Makerspace to help Santa get from country to country.
We had “elf centers” this week. We made cards, an ornament, goody bags to be distributed at the parish pantry, and elf houses out of gumdrops and toothpicks. We helped Santa with his nice list and wrapped Christmas presents for parents. We were busy little elves.
We had pajama day and cookies and cocoa with Santa.

Tuesday, December 21st-Breakfast with Santa-This is a kindergarten-only event. There is also a 12:30 dismissal. Thank you in advance to Sophia’s and Obinna’s moms for all they are doing to make this a special event for our children.

Hello!

Wow, the children were really excited this week. They were super energetic and boisterous. We have six and a half more days of school until Christmas break. Please remind your children that we need to focus on our learning in these next few days.

This week:

We learned about the life and generosity of St. Nicholas. We were visited by St. Nick. He talked about how to spread Jesus’s love during Advent and beyond. He gave everyone a tasty treat.
We learned about Immaculate Conception and that St. Anne was Mary’s mother and Jesus’s grandmother. We went to Mass with our 4th grade buddies.
We participated in singing songs about Baby Jesus and Advent.
We learned about David and Goliath.
In math, we continued working on teen numbers.
In language arts, we worked with the letters/sounds of Bb, Kk, Vv, and Ee. We continued to blend letters to read CVC and stretch the sounds to spell them.
We worked with the heart (sight) words: and, at, go. You can reinforce these letters, sounds, and words at home. We read phrases made from CVC and heart words.
We worked on labeling our pictures/stories in our journals.
We started to learn about Christmas Around the World. This week, we focused on the Christmas customs and traditions of U.S.A, Mexico, and Italy.
We did a wonderful job singing on stage during our Christmas program. The kindergartners shined!. (If your child is a bit smaller and was in the back row during the performance, please know that that was not how it was planned or practiced. Somehow, they got out of their positions after we got them up on stage.)

Announcements and Reminders:

We could use some more large size, 16-count crayons for our community boxes at tables. Maybe Santa will gift the children with new ones at Christmas that they would be willing to share.
Friday, December 16-Cookies and Cocoa with Santa and Pajama Day. This is a school-wide event.
Tuesday, December 21st-Breakfast with Santa-This is a kindergarten-only event. There is also a 12:30 dismissal for the school.

Hello!

I hope that you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, full of good food, family and fun. It’s great to be back with your children at the start of the Advent season. This is my favorite time of year to be a kindergarten teacher.

This week (and the last week before Thanksgiving):

We learned that Advent is a time to await and prepare for the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. We learned the meaning of the Advent wreath and ‘lit’ our first purple candle. We made ornaments for the parish’s Jesse Tree.
We learned the story Joshua and the Battle of Jericho and that God helps His people. We also learned about Samson and Delilah and that we should always obey God. We also learned the Golden Rule.
In math, we finished working with measurement. We measured objects. and compared height and capacity. We started to work with teen numbers by counting on from 10 to make teens. We learned to identity teens as ‘10 and some more.’
In language arts, so far we have worked with letters M, T, P, A, S, H, C, I, D, F, R, O, G, L, N and U and the sounds that they spell. We continued to blend sounds to say and letters to read CVC words. We also used those same letters to spell words. So far, we have practiced reading the heart/sight words: the, in, my, a, is, for, I, am, here. You can reinforce these letters, sounds, and words at home. In writing, we drew pictures and labeled them with the letters.
In social studies, we continued to compare life long ago to today. We learned about jobs, transportation, recreation, chores and education. This week, we had SEL (social emotional learning) lessons about friendship, empathy and compassion.
For Fun Friday, we are getting together in the Makerspace to work on fun STEM projects with our 4th grade buddies.

Hello!

We had a great week in kindergarten!

This week:

In religion, we started (and almost completed) our lessons in personal safety as directed by the ADW. These lessons were created to help your child recognize dangerous situations and equip them with skills to help them stay safe.
In math, we compared and ordered length and height. We continued our daily math problems. They children love to draw pictures in order to solve. Today’s problem was: Papa Bear had two pairs of big shoes. Mama Bear had two pairs of medium-sized shoes. Baby Bear had one pair of teeny, tiny shoes. How many shoes did they have altogether. This one stumped nearly everyone!! Ask your child to solve the problem and see if they remember.
In language arts, we worked with letters D, F, R, and O and the sounds that they spell. We continued to blend sounds/letters to say/read CVC. We also spelled words using D, R, F, O, S, H, K, I, M, T, P, and A. We also started working with the heart (sight) words: and, my, in. You can reinforce these letters, sounds, and words at home.
We read two Scaredy Squirrel books and Knufflebunny. We made predictions about what would happen, made connections with the main characters and answered comprehension questions.
In social studies, we learned about the past, present and future. We learned about how people lived long ago, their homes, food, and clothes.
We learned that Veterans’ Day is a day to honor the service of military veterans. We learned a little about the men and women in the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, and Air Force.
We had a fire drill.
We helped people in need with the L.A.R.S. Walk and donations.

Hello!

Happy Friday! Today, I had the pleasure of meeting with parents of over half of our class. Thank you so very much for all of the positive feedback, anecdotes, and kindness that you shared with me. I value our collaboratory relationships and know that, together, we will have the best year possible. I look forward to meeting with more parents on Thursday!

This week in kindergarten:

We learned what a saint is and how we can be like saints. We learned about All Saints Day and went to Mass. We listened to the 2nd graders’ saint presentation. In class, we learned about St. Rose of Lima, St. Martin de Porres, and St. Vincent de Paul.
In math, we worked on how many more, less, and in all. This class LOVES solving our daily word problems!
In language arts, we learned about vowels (V) and consonants (C) and started decoding (reading) some VC and CVC words the contained the letters S, H, C, and I. Learning to decode is important even for students who are beginning readers. Decoding VC and CVC will be useful in decoding longer, unfamiliar words.
In social studies, we continued focusing on building relationships. We modeled actions and practiced language that will help us be good friends, as well as to share and take turns. We use what we learn from these lessons at recess and at centers. We still have work to do in this area, but we are making progress.

Hello!

This week in kindergarten:

We continued to learn about Moses and how he was chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. They were fascinated by the plagues!
In math, we created sets that were one more, one less, more, less, and same. We worked daily word problems that required us to illustrate the problem in order to solve.
In language arts, we continued phonemic awareness activities and read seasonal books. In writing, we started labeling our illustrations.
We began decoding words by pronouncing one sound at a time and then blending them together. Words had the letters m, a, p, t. Many of the students were excited to read words for the first time. Other readers commented that it was the first time that they read words by “sounding them out”.
In social studies, we finished our community unit. We learned why people work and about wants and needs.
We had our first A.L.I.C.E. (intruder) drill. The children did a great job.

Hello!

We had another great week in kindergarten. The children really enjoyed playing with the fallen leaves at recess. A change in season always brings about such wonder and joy to the littles.

This week in kindergarten:

We learned about Moses as a baby, and a bit about grown-up Moses. We know that God will be with us, as He was with Moses, and that we do not need to be afraid.
In math, we compared numbers. We used math vocabulary: greater than, less than, more than, less than. We started solving daily word problems.
We used a new math tool, Cuisenaire rods. Cuisenaire rods are useful in developing mathematical concepts and ideas. They are great for fine motor skills.
In language arts, we continued phonemic awareness activities and read seasonal books.
In writing, we learned that illustrators try their best, retell stories and illustrate stories with five senses. Next week, we will start labeling.
We did a pumpkin science activity. We explored the properties of the different parts of a pumpkin with our five senses.
In social studies, we learned about places in our community and community helpers.
We enjoyed time with Blossom.

We are at the end of the first quarter of the school year. (Personally, I can’t believe it!) Kindergarten does not get report cards at this marking period, however, I will send a progress report at the end of next week.

Hello!

We had a great week in kindergarten. The students have been working hard on staying focused on instruction, participating in all activities and not distracting tablemates.

This week:

We learned that through baptism, we become members of God’s family.
We also learned about Joseph and his brothers. We learned that God was always with Joseph and that He is with us, too. We also learned that Joseph kept a positive attitude and that good things can come from bad.
In math, we read and wrote numbers to 10. We used ten-frames as a math tool. Ten-frames help children understand our base 10 system of math, help with number bonds, addition and subtraction, and help build a foundation for place value. They also allow children to subitize (recognize the number of items quickly),
We used a new math tool, geoboards. Geoboards help children understand the properties of shapes and are great for fine motor skills.
In language arts, we continued phonemic awareness activities. We continued working as illustrators to tell our stories through pictures.
We had a show and tell on Bring Your Teddy Bear to School Day.
We made applesauce. It was delicious!
In social studies, we started our unit on community. We learned and discussed different types of neighborhoods.

Please label your child’s fleece and sweatshirts.
Continue to check Bloomz for daily behavior updates. The children are proud when they earn all five points! Now that we know that all children understand the importance of keeping their hands to themselves, a “red flag” will be given when a child uses their hands during a dispute. A point will be deducted from their daily total.

Hello!

This week just zoomed by. I guess that means we were busy learning and having fun!

This week in kindergarten:

We learned about the life of St. Francis.
We learned about the rosary. We participated in the school-wide rosary service. The kindergartners did a fabulous job of showing reverence as well as participating in prayer. Nice job, kindergarten.
We learned about the Holy Family.
In math, we identified and continued predictable patterns. We read, wrote, worked with numbers 6-8.
In language arts, we continued working on our “ear exercises.” We also focused on what our lips and tongues do when we make certain sounds. We listened to alliterative stories and answered questions about them. We “peeled off” the beginning sounds of words and made rhymes.
We learned the role of an illustrator. We read books about illustrators, by famous illustrators or had unique illustrations. We worked as illustrators in our writing journal/composition books. This week, we focused on using crayons as a tool and added color to our drawing.
In social studies, we identified and classified members of our family, We compared and discussed how they are the same, but different. We made a family tree.
Blossom, our class pet, came to school this week. The students are gradually learning some fun facts about hedgehogs.

Hello!

Even though I was out most of this week, the students continued learning!

This week in kindergarten:

We focused on the story of Noah’s Ark. We retold and sequenced the story, learned the Who Built the Ark song, and created rainbows. We learned that it isn’t always easy to obey but that God will bless us if we do.
In math, we sorted by attribute. We identified same, more and less. We identified patterns.
In language arts, we worked a lot with rhymes and compound words. We listened to alliterative stories and identified words with the targeted sound. I know that many children can identify letters and sounds, but research shows that providing a strong foundation with phonemic awareness alleviates reading problems that typically show up in the intermediate grades. Embrace that we are filling in any gaps and cementing their knowledge.
We read a lot of books about feelings. We learned to identify our feelings and how to express them appropriately in a school setting.
We went to the Makerspace with our 4th grade buddies on Friday.

Hello!

We had a great week in kindergarten with lots of fun and learning!

This week in kindergarten:

In the story of Adam and Eve, we learned that we should always obey God. We also learned that God is forgiving, but there are still consequences when we choose to disobey. We connected the story with home and school. We made a ‘sneaky snake’ craft.
In math, we learned and used new math vocabulary; alike, different, differences, pair, matches. We worked on reading numbers and writing them with correct shape and size. There has been a lot of improvement.
In language arts, we read books about friendship. We discussed what friendship looks like at SMS. At St. Mary’s we include anyone who wants to play, we use kind words, encourage others, take turns, and keep our hands to ourselves. We brainstormed ideas for how to make friends and how to join a new group of friends at recess.
We started working in our handwriting workbooks. We identified our dominant hand and practiced vertical lines.
We worked with isolating beginning sounds, rhyming words, blended syllables in compound words to produce the whole word. At this point in the year, much of our work will be auditory. It’s important for children to have good phonological awareness before we start reading instruction. Even after 35+ years of teaching, I’m still learning about best practices. I’ve sent an information flyer about the Science of Reading home in today’s folder.

In kindergarten, progress reports will be provided at the end of the first quarter. Report cards will be issued at the end of the second quarter.

Hello!

Kindergarten is making good progress with routines and procedures. I’m proud of them for working hard.

This week in kindergarten:

We have continued to learn the Creation Story. It is amazing to hear the children speak about God’s creation. Many of them can identify what God created on each day. Wowza! (Ask them to sing the God Created song to you at home.)
In math, we used our math tools. We really focused on writing numbers with the correct path of motion. We counted forward and backward, and ordered and compared numbers,
In language arts, we read a lot of books about colors. We continued our phonemic awareness “ear/listening exercises” and will work on these skills daily. In reading, we also worked with sorting into categories. We identified items given their place using the terms: first, next, last, before, after. We identified part and whole and worked with rhyming words.
We learned that the three primary colors can be mixed to make secondary colors. With our 4th grade buddies, we attempted to create a rainbow of colors using only three colors. We sure had fun working with them in the Makerspace on Friday afternoon.
We continued learning about our classmates as they become “Star Students.” We enjoy writing and drawing pictures for them.

Hello!

We are making slow, but steady progress in learning our routines and procedures. We are continuing to spend time learning how to do things as a kindergartner. Remember, we have to go slow to go fast.

This week in kindergarten:

We have started to learn the Creation Story and understand that God created our beautiful world and everything in it.
During our morning meetings, we continued to learn about and make connections with one another.
We worked with numbers to five. Many children can count and identify numbers well past five, but again, we are building a strong foundation and filling in any gaps along the way. Every student can use practice with writing numerals.
Also in language arts, we started our phonemic awareness “ear exercises.” We worked with rhymes, isolated the beginning and ending sounds, and segmented and blended compound words.
We started having “Star Students.” Each day a student is selected (alphabetically) to be the star student. We learn about them, make connections, and draw a picture of them to take home. The star student will be the line leader for the day. More responsibilities will be given to the star as the year progresses.
We participated in the first fire drill. The kindergartners did a pretty good job. We will keep practicing. We will have weather emergency and intruder drills soon.
We practiced appropriately using playdoh.
We celebrated red, blue, yellow, and green days. We used different art mediums to create special color projects.

We received more surprise packages from our Amazon wishlist. If your child has not received a thank you note, please let me know.
Shoe Reminder-If your child cannot tie their shoes, they should not wear shoes with ties to school. It’s not safe. Also, please check your child’s shoe sizing. Some shoes are coming off repeatedly.
Thank you for joining Bloomz. I love to use it as a form of general communication. We will use email for specific communication about your child. I do not check Bloomz until school is out. If there is a dismissal change, please email me and dismissal@stmaryofthemills.org.
Next week, you will get a daily behavior report for your child on Bloomz. The students can earn one point in each of five categories each day for exemplary behavior. Students will not receive points in areas where they needed support or extra reinforcement. It is possible that, in some circumstances, students will receive negative points. Students can watch their egg crack and cute monster emerge when they accumulate 25 points.
We are fortunate that the PG County Health Department will provide vision and hearing screenings for kindergartners. There is a consent form to sign in your child’s folder. Please complete and return the form on Monday.

Happy Friday

We had a wonderful first week in school! This week, we focused on routines and procedures, as well as community building. By the end of the week, the children were able to unpack their backpacks upon arrival and mostly able to pack them up again at dismissal. They can walk quietly through the hall. I have heard a lot of kind words used when they speak with their classmates. The children are enthusiastic about everything we are doing. I can tell that this will be a great year!

In kindergarten, we have a tradition of having Color Days. Each day, we will read books and do activities that have to do with a given color. The fun part is that the students can dress in that color, too. Below is our schedule. Please note that if your child does not have a clothing item in the given color, they must wear the corresponding piece of their uniform. (Examples: If on red day, Mary has red shorts, but no red shirt, she will wear her P.E. shirt with the red shorts. If on yellow day, George can only find yellow socks, he will wear his regular uniform with yellow socks.) Let me know if you have any questions.

This week in kindergarten:

We prayed together in the morning, at the end of the day and before snack and lunch.
The children are working on blessing themselves before and after prayers.
We went to a schoolwide mass with our 4th grade buddies.
We had morning meetings. The students are learning about their classmates and sharing common interests. They learned the hand signal for me too/we have a connection.
In math, we are learning about the calendar. We sing Days of the Week daily. We explored math tools (counting bears, snap cubes and dice).
In language arts, we listened to books and answered questions.
We practiced appropriately using pencils, crayons, glue sticks, scissors, markers, and dot dabbers.
We went to our related arts classes: P.E., music, technology, Spanish, and art.
We learned to play safely on the playground.

Announcements and Reminders:

September 5-No school
Lunches-
- Please provide utensils and a napkin for your child.
- Please send items that they can open themselves (as much as possible).
- Please indicate which food is for morning snack. Many of you are already doing this. Thank you.
- Hot lunch starts next week. I’m sure they will enjoy the wonderful selections.
Uniforms-
- Students need to wear sneakers each day. If your child cannot tie their shoes, please try different laces, use a lace clip or provide shoes that slip-on. This is for their safety.
- Students should wear white socks (unless it is a specific color day).
Sixteen families have signed up to use the Bloomz app to get weekly updates and pictures. We will start daily behavior reports soon.
- If you have not signed up, please look at the instructions that were included in your Back to School packet that was emailed to you on August 29th. We look forward to having you join us!
Weekly Update-
- I am emailing this weekly update to all families. Starting next week, you will find it on our class website and on Bloomz. You will not get an email copy.
Water Donation-Students sometimes forget to bring their water bottles. I’d appreciate any donations of small single-use water bottles.
