"WRITE IT BADLY. Write it badly, write it badly, write it badly, write it badly. Stop what you’re doing, open a Word document, put a pencil on some paper, just get the idea out of your head. Let it be good later. Write it down now. Otherwise it will die in there." - Brandon Sanderson
Hi!
I'm Mrs. Maria Canning. I have taught middle school since 2011. I relish the opportunity to help students build organizational skills and processes that will help them succeed. Though my career up until last year has career has focused on science, I have always been an avid reader and writer. I look forward to sharing my love of reading and writing with the 6th graders of St. Mary's.
Family
My family moved from Kansas City in 2025. Thomas (Class of 2032) and Timothy (Class of 2034) enrolled at SMS right away and we couldn't be happier to be apart of such a vibrant community.
Welcome to Junior High at St. Mary's
Welcome to junior high at St. Mary’s! These next three years are an exciting time filled with growth, friendships, leadership opportunities, and preparation for high school. 6th Grade Highlights
6th grade is an exciting first year of junior high and the beginning of many important traditions and opportunities. It is a year of growth, adjustment, and building habits that will help students succeed throughout junior high.
Mum Sale Fundraiser for the Washington, D.C. Trip
One important part of 6th grade is beginning participation in the mum sale fundraiser to help offset the cost of the 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip. Starting early allows families to build funds over time.
Here is how the mum sale works: Students earn $5 credit for each item sold toward their individual D.C. trip account. Some items may earn slightly less or slightly more depending on the product. The greenhouse will issue one check directly to the school at the time of the trip. The school will then send payment to the travel company based on each student’s earned balance from the official sales reports. This fundraiser is a wonderful opportunity to begin preparing early for one of the most memorable experiences of 8th grade.
Additional 6th Grade Reminders
Develop strong study and organization habits early. Learn to manage increased homework and responsibilities. Stay involved in school activities and events. Ask questions and seek help when needed.
6th grade lays the foundation for a successful and rewarding junior high experience at St. Mary’s.
