Welcome to Art!

Mrs. Ellen C. Smith

Art Teacher Grades PK-8

Hello Saint Mary students and families! I am delighted to be returning as your child's art teacher for the 2020-21 school year. After graduating with a degree in Elementary Education with Middle School endorsements and an emphasis in Studio Art, I have had a multitude of experiences with children of all ages and abilities. Specifically related to art, I have been an instructor for two different summer enrichment programs for many years, and have had several stints as long-term art substitute. Art is both my passion, and one of my most pleasurable hobbies!

My schedule will be a busy one! I will see all grades and classes once weekly. We will focus on a variety of art projects in accordance with the art standards from the archdiocese; we will do these projects using a vast array of media and techniques. This year, students will be participating in art directly from their classroom, as I travel from room-to-room. While grades 1-4 will receive pass/fail in art, feedback will be given to the students to encourage progress and positive behavior. Grades 5-8 will receive skill based rubrics based on project requirements, and receive weekly points based on observations in the following areas: Safety with Art Supplies, Treating Others Respectfully, Awesome Effort and Participation and Responsible Voices and Choices (STAR). Encourage your student to aim high with these points!

I sincerely look forward to seeing your child shine this year with their artwork! Let's get their creative juices flowing!
