Theme: Ocean
We learned about ocean life and discovered interesting facts about different ocean animals. We read the story of Jonah and worked on our Jonah and the Whale craft. We learned that Jonah trusted and prayed to God when he was in the belly of the whale.
We also read Rainbow Fish and talked about the importance of sharing with others. We learned that the more the Rainbow fish shared the more happy he felt.
We worked on our Dd sound mini book and worked on writing and spelling number 10.
*The last day of Preschool is Tuesday, June 1st. We are inviting all of our friends who do not attend on Tuesdays to join us for our last day of Pre-K!

We've been learning about the lifecycle of a Plant. We talked about what plants need to grow. We also talked about the parts of a plant and created a flower craft. We planted our grass seeds too and will continue to water them and watch them grow!
Greatest Commandments: We ended our Seeds Religion Program by discussing the two important commandments that Jesus gave us. We also talked about the rosary and have been practicing The Lord's Prayer.

We have been discussing weather and how clouds make rain. We learned that rain is formed when tiny droplets of water collect in clouds. We also used water, shaving cream and food coloring to create a rain cloud in a cup!
We had a Lockdown Drill on Wednesday. We were so proud of all our preschoolers for doing an awesome job practicing being safe!
Jesus Is The True Vine: We learned that we are part of God's family just like the branches are connected to the vine. Jesus shares God's love with us.
We have completed our Jolly Phonics program. We will be spending the next few weeks reviewing our letters and letter sounds. We practiced writing and spelling seven.

We discussed how the changes the butterflies goes through is called Metamorphosis. We learned about the Migration of Monarch Butterflies and discussed how butterflies, like birds, migrate to places that are warm. We made our beautiful tie dye butterflies with coffee filters.
We've been observing our caterpillars every day and so far we have three that have formed into a chrysalis!
Jesus is Our Good Shepherd: We discussed how with Jesus as our shepherd we are cared for in every way.

The purpose of the Class Advocate program is to serve as a communication liaison, welcome new families, support teachers, and create community within the grade. Some of the duties this year included planning a virtual get together for the grade, sending welcome emails to new families starting at SMS, supporting teachers with holiday celebrations/supplies/appreciation, promoting the school fundraiser, and passing along information from the Family School Organization (FSO). Theme: Week of the Young Child
We had a busy fun-filled week celebrating our young learners! Below are some of the highlights of our week. (Be sure to check out pictures!)
Music Monday: We read Giraffes Can't Dance and learned that we can make music from different objects. We made paper plate shakers.
Tasty Tuesday: We read Keeping Healthy and reviewed ways that we can stay healthy. We talked about good eating habits and making healthy choices. We shared our favorite snacks during snack time.
Work Together Wednesday: We talked about teamwork and how working together allows us to accomplish great things as well as have fun with others. We had fun creating together with play-doh.
Artsy Thursday: We created beautiful chalk paintings inspired by the book, "Ish" by Peter Reynolds.
Family Friday: We celebrated our families by sharing our family photos with our class.
We recently received our caterpillars and will be studying the life cycle of butterflies in the next week. It has been fun watching our little caterpillars grow so fast! We will continue to observe them every day through their stages until they turn into butterflies where we will take them outside and let them fly to their new homes!

We learned about Palm Sunday and worked on our Palm Leaf craft. We learned that people placed palm leaves and cloaks in front of Jesus while shouting Hosanna! We also learned about the Easter Story and the empty tomb. We talked about the Easter Egg and how it symbolizes the stone that rolled away. Easter is a time of happiness as we learn Jesus is Risen! We were also surprised to find that the Easter Bunny had visited our class and hidden eggs for us to find!

We were so excited to start our unit on Space and had much to share and so many questions about space! We explored amazing facts about space and had fun creating our rockets and constellations that we put up in our hallway!
This is My Son, My Chosen One. Listen to Him (Luke 9:35). This week's Seeds lesson introduced the story of Jesus' Transfiguration. We learned that God wants us to listen. We talked about the importance of listening to God, our parents, teachers, friends. We learned that listening helps us learn, keeps us safe, and shows others that we love and care for them.

In celebration of Presidents' Day, our unit this week was on our Nation's leaders and many of their great accomplishments. We learned fun facts about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We created our George Washington Masks and Log Cabins!
Ash Wednesday: We talked about Ash Wednesday and learned that it is the beginning of Lent, a special time to grow in God's love, a special time of choices. We talked a little bit about prayer and helping others. We talked about the ashes and learned that they come from the Palm Leaves we receive on Palm Sunday. We also received ashes in the manner that The Vatican suggested which was sprinkling the ashes on top of the child's head as a sign that we love Jesus.
We practiced writing uppercase and lowercase Tt. We Learned the /t/ sound and our Jolly Phonics song for the letter t. We also practiced writing number 20. We reviewed the rhyme for number 2: Around and Back on the railroad track, two, two, ... and 0: Around, and around, and around we go. When we get home we have a zero!

We read the story of the Gingerbread Boy and Gingerbread Girl and compared the two stories.
We created our Gingerbread boys and girls. We also practiced patterning.
We learned the following Gingerbread Finger Play:
Stir a bowl of gingerbread. Smooth and spicy brown. Roll it with a rolling pin. Up, and up, and down. With a cookie cutter, make some little men. Put them in the oven till half past ten!

One of Santa's little helpers came to visit us this week to be Santa's eyes and ears. We've been having fun finding him in a new hiding spot every morning! We decided to name our little friend Mistletoe!
To help us count down to Christmas we created our Christmas countdown chain. We also learned about Advent. We talked about the candles on the Advent wreath and their colors. We learned what each candle represents: Hope we have in Jesus. Peace we find in Jesus. Love we have in Jesus. Joy we find in Jesus.
We used our fine motor skills to create our Advent wreaths with play-doh.

We learned that the Pilgrims sailed across the Atlantic on the Mayflower. We talked about the homes that the Native Americans lived in and worked on our Tipi craft. We learned that pictographs are drawings that tell a story. We also practiced ABAB patterning by making our Native American pattern headbands.

We had a fun week of Halloween stories and crafts. We had fun trick-or-treating and dancing in the Activity Center. Thank you FSO and Preschool Parent Advocates for making it a memorable day for our littles!
We practiced writing uppercase and lowercase H h. We Learned the /h/ sound and our Jolly Phonics song for the letter h. We also practiced writing number 8. We learned the following rhyme to help us: Make an s and do not wait, go back up and that's an 8!
Jesus wants us to be happy: We learned that when we do good, we feel good too! We talked about Saint Patrick, Saint John Bosco, and Dorothy Day. We learned that these followers of Jesus were always happy to help others. We talked about how we can help others.

Theme: Pumpkins!
This week we learned all about the Lifecycle of a Pumpkin. We also talked about the parts of a pumpkin: Stem, skin, pulp, seeds. We worked on our Lego stamped pumpkin craft. We also investigated the inside of a pumpkin and drew a picture of our observation.
In celebration of Unity Day we read What Does It Mean To Be Kind? and One Big Heart. We learned that God made each of us unique but inside all of us is one big heart and God wants us to be kind and share our love with others.
We practiced writing uppercase and lowercase G g. We Learned the /g/ sound and our Jolly Phonics song for the letter g. We also practiced writing number 7. We learned the following rhyme to help us: Across the sky and down from heaven. That's the way we make a seven!
Jesus Has Two Rules: We talked about the rules that Jesus shares with us: To Love God, and to love others. We learned that being kind shows others that we love them.

Theme: Fire Safety
This week we learned all about fire safety. We had our very first Fire Drill and we all did such a great job quickly and safely exiting the building! We learned about what Firefighters do and talked about the gear that firefighters wear. We learned the steps to follow if our clothes catch on fire (Stop, Drop, and Roll).
We practiced writing uppercase and lowercase F f. We Learned the /f/ sound and our Jolly Phonics song for the letter f. We also practiced writing number 6. We learned the following rhyme to help us: Make a curve and then a loop there are no tricks to make a six!
We Praise God: We talked about ways that we praise God. Giving thanks, praying, singing songs, listening to Bible stories. We learned that we can praise God at any time throughout the day. We also talked about the things that we are thankful for and can give thanks and praise to God for.

Wednesday, October 21: Unity Day! Wear orange with your uniform.
Theme: Autumn
This week we discussed the changes that we experience in Autumn. We talked about our senses and drew pictures of some of the things we see, feel, hear, smell, and taste in the fall time. We also finger-painted colorful fall leaves on our trees.
We practiced writing uppercase and lowercase Ee. We Learned the /e/ sound and our Jolly Phonics song for the letter e. We also practiced writing number 5. We learned the following rhyme to help us: Straight line down, then around. Hat on top, five's a clown!
Jesus invites us all to celebrate! We learned that Jesus invites us to God's celebration each Sunday at church. We listen to God's word and celebrate God's love for us. We read Jesus Blesses the Children. We learned that God loves and invites all people to join Him.

Theme: Fall Leaves!
This week we learned all about different kinds of leaves. We learned that leaves come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. We also talked about the parts of a leaf. We used water color paints to create fantastic fall leaves to decorate our hall!
We learned the Falling Leaves Song: Leaves are falling, leaves are falling, on the ground, on the ground! Autumn leave are falling, Autumn leaves are falling! Red, yellow, and brown! Red, orange and brown!
We practiced writing uppercase and lowercase Dd. We Learned the /d/ sound and our Jolly Phonics song for the letter d. We also practiced writing number 4. We learned the following rhyme to help us: Down and over, down once more. That's the way we make a four!
Growing in God's Love: We read the story, "When I Grow Up". We talked about what helps us grow. We learned that God wants us to grow close to Him through prayer, listening to God's word, and loving others.

This week we learned all about the parts of an apple: skin, flesh, seeds, stem, and leaf. We investigated the inside of an apple and drew a picture of what we discovered.
We learned our Apple Tree song: Way up high in the apple tree. 5 (4,3,2,1,) little apples smiled at me. I shook that tree as hard as I could. Down came an apple mmm mmm good!

This week we learned all about squirrels and acorns. We talked about the life cycle of the great Oak Tree and how it grows from a tiny acorn. We used our fine motor skills to sprinkle coffee grounds on our acorn craft.
We learned our Acorn song: I'm an acorn small and round. Lying on the cold, cold ground. Everybody steps on me. That is why I'm cracked you see. I'm a nut! (Click, click with tongue) I'm a nut! (Click, click with tongue) I'm a nut! (Click, click with tongue).

We had another great week back at school learning friend's names and classroom rules and routines. I am so proud of our preschoolers for doing such a great job! We have been practicing tracing and writing number 0. We used the following rhyme to help us: Around and around and around we go, when we get home we have a zero.
We also learned about different kinds of lines and used our fine motor skills to practiced tracing lines.
We had fun reading Pete the Cat Back to School Books and creating a Pete the Cat craft out of different shapes. We are hanging them in the hall for all to see our beautiful work!

Hip Hip Hooray for our first week of Pre-K! I am SO proud of our preschoolers who have been doing such a great job with following rules to stay healthy this year! We had a busy back to school week learning each others names, our classroom rules, and practicing our classroom routines. The following are our Classroom Rules that we discussed and have been doing a great job following!

We read the book The Kissing Hand and created a Chester the Raccoon craft to go with our story.
