The Learning & Resource Centre at St Martin’s School is home to a wide variety of different resources:
Approximately 6000 books – around 3000 fiction and 3000 non-fiction across a broad range of subjects and curriculum areas.
16 networked computers with internet access.
Careers Library – an extensive selection of Careers information, university prospectuses and books on teenage issues.
A range of events are also hosted in the LRC such as:
Scholastic Book Fairs – an opportunity for pupils to buy books at discounted prices, with an annual Book Fair providing the same opportunity every year.
Book Club - Mondays after school. We read a variety of classics and new releases and also participate in the Carnegie medal shadowing scheme.
World Book Day - Each year upon World Book Day, the LRC hosts tailored activities in order to bring reading to life for our students.
National Storytelling week - Research shows just reading aloud to students at pace has huge benefits for their reading ability. So we invite volunteers from the community as well as our own school staff to share with students their favorite stories.
How is the Resource Centre used?
Once a fortnight in Year 7-8, each English class will have a ‘Drop Everything and Read’ lesson in the Resource Centre. Plenty of time each lesson is also devoted to class reading for pleasure with an evolving programme of study currently being devised.
The Resource Centre is always open throughout break time, lunchtime and for half an hour after school for pupils who need to borrow/return books, quietly read, complete homework or play board games.
The Resource Centre has undergone significant refurbishment in recent years, making it one of the most spacious spaces at St Martin’s, with an inviting atmosphere.
Opening times: Monday to Friday 8:00 am-3:00 pm
