Idwal Davies

Squadron Leader Idwal Davies, service Number: 63418, served in the Royal Air Force. He was killed on 22nd of June, 1944 aged 29 and is buried in the Bayeux War Cemetery in France. He was the son of Joseph and Maud Davies he was the husband of Irene Mary Davies 

Idwal Davies was flying in a Typhoon bomber as part of the D-Day Landings. He had only recently moved from 609 Squadron to take command of no.198. After his plane was hit, he made it as far as friendly lines over the Cherborg area, but left it too late to bale out and the pilots watched as his parachute failed to open fully. He did not survive.  

Idwal Davies was award the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions in the war. 

This is the Distinguished Flying Cross medal which was awarded for "an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy".
