The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based religious formation program for children, developed by Sofia Cavalletti and Gianna Gobbi. It aims to help children develop a relationship with God through hands-on materials, scripture, and liturgical experiences presented in a specially prepared environment called an atrium. The program emphasizes contemplation, enjoyment of God, and allowing children to come to God through their own exploration and discovery.
The 3-6-year-old child is particularly capable of receiving and enjoying the most essential elements of our faith—the announcement of God’s love especially experienced through Jesus, the Good Shepherd, who died and is risen. Materials on the life of Jesus Christ and his teachings help to make the mystery of God concrete for the child. The heart of the catechesis for children under six revolves around the Parable of the Good Shepherd. Jesus announces that he is the Good Shepherd who calls each one by name. The sheep listen to the voice of the Shepherd and follow him.
The 3-6 year old child enters the mystery of the Eucharist by first learning the names of the articles used on the altar and then through the most important gestures including the preparation of the chalice, the epiclesis and offering, and the sign of peace. Through the experience of seeing these gestures, presented one by one, the Mass emerges as the Sacrament of the Gift. The child becomes acquainted with the historical character of the liturgy through the events of the Last Supper, Christ’s death, and His resurrection.
About Myself
My name is Larisa Avalos de Elena, I'm originally from El Salvador and came to live to the United States in 2014. I'm married to William Elena and have three kids, Gerardo, Pilar and Isabella.
I have a degree in Chemical Engineering and a Masters in Family Education. I decided to be a stay at home mom and when my children were growing up I dedicated my time helping with the catechesis program at their school. When we moved to Corpus Christi, TX, I became involved in my daughter's school and learned about the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program, I volunteered in the school Atrium the first year and fell in love with the program, so I decided to take the formation courses and I am certified as a Level I and Level II catechist for the Good Shepherd Program. I volunteered as a catechist in Corpus Christi and in Houston and last year here in St. Martha's Catholic School, was my first year as a leading catechist and I'm learning along the way because the children teach me so much every day.
