Our Rich History
Mrs Maria Dyer
Mrs Maria Dyer was moved by compassion for young, homeless girls.
- Founded in 1842 by Mrs Maria Dyer, a missionary from London.
- Moved by compassion for young, homeless girls who were being auctioned as slaves for the homes of the rich, she started a home-cum-school for them.
- Her efforts led to the setting up of the first girls' school in the Far East eventually the founding of St. Margaret's School (Secondary).
St. Margaret’s is the oldest girls’ school in Singapore and the Far East.
In our 181-year-old history, St. Margaret’s has seen many ups and downs, including World War I and World War II.
Through it all, we remain faithful to our mission to not only educate girls but to care for the less privileged.
