Salt and Light Programme

Our students learn that it is important to be Other-Centred Contributors who care, not only for themselves but for others as well. In line with the school’s mission and vision of nurturing caring students, St. Margaret’s has in place a structured Salt and Light Programme (SLP) which aims to develop students who are willing to act and serve another’s need. Students learn about community issues and the needs of others, and come up with proposals on how they can contribute to improvements in school, at home or in the community.

Students are also provided a global perspective of the less privileged which allows them to appreciate the simplest aspects of life. In this endeavour, the school forms partnerships with various organisations to better serve the global community.

SLP is a signature programme at St. Margaret’s School (Secondary) that provides a rich environment for our students to develop into other-centred contributors. Through their engagement with the community, students are also equipped with 21st century competencies.

The school recognizes that each student has a unique role to play in reaching out to touch the lives of others within the community. Our students are encouraged to make positive changes in society through local Values In Action (VIA) and Service Learning projects. Through our various programmes, we aim to develop students who will serve God, our state and our school.

Furthermore, our SLP lessons aim to empower students to be thinking individuals who have a heart for others and are able to make well-considered decisions in their projects. Our students are provided with opportunities to innovate new solutions and see their plans to fruition.

Similar to our Development of Talents to Serve (DOTS) programme, SLP allows many of our students to use their talents and abilities to bless the community. In line with our school Vision to learn, grow and glow for God, the students not only do well in their talent areas, but also do good by using these talents to directly benefit the people around them.

When it was announced that visitors could no longer be physically present at nursing homes, the Secondary 3 students quickly explored the idea of remote volunteering. Our students adapted their engagements and adapted their projects.
