MIDDLE SCHOOL Activities

MS Activities Philosophy

The Middle School Activities program is dedicated to providing activities that go beyond the academic experience and contribute to the development of the whole child - that is, the social, emotional, and physical development of each child. Activities are the primary vehicle for delivering a variety of quality programs.  Participation in these activities enriches a student’s skills, knowledge, and relationship with other students and faculty members.

MS Afternoon activities daily schedule

For the 2022-23 school year, the Middle School will have athletics and activities from 3:10 p.m. to 3:55 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.  If it is raining, teams will meet inside for the appointed period which may be devoted to discussion, videos, or activities related to the sport and will be supervised by the coaches.  All Middle School students should be picked up at 3:55 p.m. on Monday through Thursday except on days when they have a later game scheduled.  Because school ends on Friday at 2:35 p.m., there are no Middle School activities that day.

The 3:10 p.m. to 3:55 p.m. activity session is an integral part of the St. Luke’s program.  All Middle School students are required to participate in this part of the program.  Waivers can be granted for the fall and spring seasons for activities that are currently not in season at SLS.  For example, a student may not waive out of activities in the fall to play town football because SLS football is a fall activity.  The School reserves the right to deny a waiver from the program.

All Middle School sports teams will have interscholastic games each season which usually extend beyond the 3:55 p.m. dismissal time.  Team schedules will be published on each team page on the SLS website. Likewise, Middle School drama productions will require additional time during the week preceding the production.

In some cases, eighth graders may play on a varsity or junior varsity team that will meet during the Upper School activity time.  These students will attend a team-only study hall during the Middle School activity period.  In general, however, study hall is not an option as an activity; all students are expected to be engaged in the athletic or arts programs.

Season Dates:

Fall Season: September 11 to November 9

Winter Season: November 27 to February 22

Spring Season: March 25 to May 17

*Special Note: Students are allowed to apply for a waiver from activities in the Fall and Spring seasons provided students and parents complete the activities waiver form and submit it to Mr. Chuhta before the beginning of each season.

*St. Luke’s makes every attempt to schedule games that minimize disruptions to the academic day.  Occasionally, students will need to be released from classes a bit earlier to account for travel time and daylight hours.

In-between Seasons

There are a few weeks in the year when St. Luke's is in-between sports seasons and there are no afternoon activities.  During those week(s), the school will be dismissed at 3:00 pm Monday/Wednesday and 2:35 PM Tuesday/Thursday.   Those dates are listed on the one-page calendar and on the website calendar.  Please be aware that season start and stop dates may be different for upper school teams. Coaches may announce additional games and practices that extend beyond the end of activities date

Winter Season Option

St. Luke’s will continue to offer a full slate of musicals and athletics in the winter, and we offer many other enhanced activities that are designed to engage a wide range of student interests.  However, given the pace of the school year, students may take off the winter season.  If a student chooses winter season off, he or she must be picked up from the campus immediately after the end of classes at 3:00 p.m.  There will be no direct supervision or optional study hall offered after 3:00 p.m.

This option is for the winter season only.  Students must submit an activities waiver in order to waive out of fall or spring activities
