Gerald Francis “Jerry” Brewer, 93, of Louisville, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 2,2022.
He was born April 13, 1929 in Louisville to the late Henry Eugene Brewer and Mary Agnes Breckel Brewer. In his youth he was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi where he later married his wife, “Betty”; in a double wedding with his sister Mary Jane. He graduated from St. Xavier HS in 1947, and the University of Louisville Speed School of Engineering in 1952. He joined the KY Army National Guard in 1948 and retired on his 60th birthday in 1989 as a Lt Colonel. In 1952 he joined the family business, Louisville Lumber; Millwork Co. which was founded by his father, and later was a partner with his brother C. Eugene Brewer. He also became a partner in the purchase of Ohio Valley Door Corp. in 1972 until selling to his son, Jerry Jr. He was not shy about work or participation and held leadership positions in AWI(Architectural Woodwork Institute), The Kiwanis Club, and St. Leonard Catholic Church. He was a time keeper for the KY Derby Parade, and a judge in VICA(vocational skills development).
He was most proud of his marriage to his wife Elizabeth Ann & Betty; Hinkle Brewer of 70 years until her recent death on June 3rd. He also bragged often about their 8 beautiful children who survive him; Diana Banks(Fred), Jim Brewer, Debbie Brewer, Mike Brewer(Nadine), Joe Brewer(Deborah), Donna Geralds (Les), Janet Sutherland, and Jerry Brewer Jr.(Nancy). He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and sister Theresa Baumann. He was preceded in death by 6 siblings, and granddaughter Shannon Brewer. Jerry never met a stranger, was dedicated to his commitments, and maintained a strong Christian faith. He loved to debate, regardless of what side he was on, resulting in many stimulating dialogues. He can now rest in peace with Betty while loved ones carry on their memories.
