Weekly Parish Update

April 8th, 2021

On this day . . .

One thing about prayer and worship is they don't keep time like my watch or my calendar. I'm reminded of that every day this week, because the Preface to the Eucharistic Prayer says that we praise God "on this day above all . . . when Christ our Passover has been sacrificed." In the language of the prayers, every day in the Easter Octave is Easter Day itself. For eight days. It's a concept that we Louisvillians are at least kind of familiar with. After all we have a "week" that ends on the first Saturday in May that contains at least 21 days. Some things are so wonderful and amazing and overwhelming and joyful that they just don't fit into time. Not into the time we have, and not into Time as in time itself. And while Derby might not qualify at that level, the death and resurrection of Christ absolutely does. And so let's let Easter stretch our concepts of time. Until every day is Easter. Not April 4, 2021. But that day that the tomb was found empty, and Christ, no longer bound, could be everywhere.

-Fr Lou

RENEW, Return, Rejoice!

"We're now in a season of joy. We're now in a season of renewal."

In this short video, St. Leonard Parish Council Chair Lauren Riley invites us all to recommit ourselves to our parish community in this season of Easter rejoicing. We are excited about what's coming next for our parish!

Interior Church Plaster Repairs & Painting Begins Wednesday, April 7, 2021

Please Note Change In Liturgy Location During Renovations!

Beginning Wednesday, April 7th the St. Frances of Rome church interior will undergo major interior repairs and renovations. The interior plaster has developed some significant cracks and it needs to be repaired and repainted. This process will take approximately 4-5 weeks to complete. The interior decor will not be changed and the church will maintain its current aesthetic. In order to complete this project in a timely manner, the church will be closed so scaffolding can be put up and remain up throughout this process. The church closure will allow for the work to be completed in a timely manner and allow the workers to proceed without adjusting to liturgy schedules.

Fr. Lou and the St. Frances of Rome Parish Council felt that a project of this scope would best be completed while the church is still under the Covid-19 seating restrictions. The goal is to complete these projects before the church seating limitations are lifted. All St. Frances of Rome liturgies will be held at St. Leonard's church at 440 Zorn Avenue, Louisville, until this project is completed. The St. Frances of Rome's weekday and Sunday liturgy schedule dovetails very easily with St. Leonard's liturgy schedule and will prevent significant adjustments. Both parishes' liturgy times and ministers' schedules for each parish will remain the same. Project progress reports will be available throughout the project via the electronic parish newsletter and in the weekly print bulletin. Contact your parish office of you have specific questions or concerns. Thank you for your understanding, patience and support of this endeavor.

St. Frances of Rome Church is an exquisite treasured pearl and these renovations will maintain her beauty for future generations.

Thanks to Allison Gousha, Darlene Sheehan, Lucy Geerer, Patty Morris and her granddaughters, Tom Stocker, Chris Carter, Patti Nash, and Barbara Trompeter for their time and effort in decorating the church for the Easter Season. Thank you to the granddaughters of Patty and the late Geoff Morris for their work designing the church Flower Garden pictured here. Thank you as well for the beautiful artwork on the doors behind it created by the students at Immaculata Classical Academy.

St. Frances of Rome

A special thank you to Kathy Leonard and the St. Frances of Rome Art and Environment Committee for all their planning and hard work throughout these last several weeks. The church was reverent and beautifully decorated to reflect the liturgies and services from Palm Sunday, to the Triduum and for Easter Sunday. [Special note: Following the Easter Sunday 11:30am liturgy, the Easter lilies were shared with our friends at Sycamore Village Nursing Home to enjoy throughout the Easter Season while we undergo renovations.]

Leonard Ladies Updates

Concluding our journey with "Imagine"

First, we would like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who journeyed along with us throughout our Imagine series. In particular, we'd like to thank Jo-Dee Jackson, Carol Sexton, Jane Bartley, and Maureen Volz for facilitating the sessions. This journey has been such a beautiful opportunity for growth in prayer and in friendship for everyone who participated.

Let's celebrate the beauty of friendship and spring this Easter season!

"We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company." (Psalm 55:14)

You're invited to a Tea Party hosted by the Leonard Ladies!

The Leonard Ladies will host tea on Wednesday, April 21st from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm at St. Leonard, in the school cafeteria (all COVID protocols will be followed). All women of St. Leonard and St. Frances of Rome are welcome to join us for this gathering - and please feel free to bring a friend!

Leonard Ladies Spring Service Project

Help the Leonard Ladies support the clients of Ozanam Inn shelter

For it is in giving that we receive. - Saint Francis of Assisi

This spring the Leonard Ladies invite you to give to the men at Ozanam Inn. Ozanam Inn is a men’s homeless shelter with 68 emergency, overnight bunk beds for men who would otherwise be on the streets. Staffed 24 hours a day, the shelter offers professional case management to homeless men. In partnership with the Veterans Administration, St. Vincent de Paul Louisville also offers case management and private rooms to 20 homeless veterans.

When the men leave Ozanam Inn to start a life on their own, they have very little. We will be creating exit baskets to drop off at the shelter. Each basket will include:

Laundry basket

Small dish soap

Small clothes detergent

Hand soap or body wash

Tea towel

Dish rag

Bath towel

Wash cloth

Sponge

2 plates

2 bowls

2 glasses

Small frying pan

Cooking pot

A set of cutlery (2 teaspoons, 2 forks, 2 knives)

A roll of paper towels

A 4-pack of toilet paper

Soup ladle

Can opener

Spatula

Deodorant

Razor and shaving cream

Toothbrush and toothpaste

How to give:

  1. Donate items you have (they can be used or new!). Items can be dropped off in the laundry basket in the back of church or at the parish office.

  2. Mail a check to made out to St. Leonard by Sunday, April 25 and write Ozanam Inn on the memo line. We will use your donation to purchase items from the dollar store, so even a little donation will go a long way!

  3. Invite your friends and family to keep an eye out for items as they spring clean their homes and attend yard sales in the neighborhood

When donating items, first contact Maureen Volz, to make sure we still have a need for the items you would like to contribute. You can text or call Maureen at 502-468-3759 or email her at Volz.Maureen@gmail.com. Our goal is to assemble and deliver the baskets by May 1! Thank you for considering a donation. The Leonard Ladies are excited to serve our community!

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common.” Acts 4:32

The Christian community described in Acts understood and practiced total stewardship. The believers did not claim personal ownership but held everything in common. Stewardship not only involves sharing our possessions with others, but also sharing our ownership of those possessions with God.
