Weekly Parish Update

April 1st, 2021

"Nature's first leaf's a flower"

As Robert Frost pointed out, the first things to burst forth on the bare branches of trees are flowers. "But only so an hour." One of the things I love about Easter in Louisville is how often that "hour" coincides with Holy Week. Where yesterday were bare branches, today are yellows and purples and whites. All the coming glory of summer shining against the bare branches of winter. All the coming glory of Love and Life shining forth from an empty tomb. And both coming after a particularly "long, cold, lonely winter." (To quote another great poet.) The sun, the flowers, the life rising all around us feel especially welcome this Spring. So too do these days set aside to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus. The Father who is faithful to the Son through all things, even, and most especially, death. The God who is faithful to His people through all things, even, and maybe most especially, this past year. The God who will stand with us until the resurrection of Jesus is fulfilled in the end of days.

Life rises all around us and cannot be stopped. Love himself raises us to life and cannot be stopped. Happy Easter!

-Fr Lou

Interior Church Plaster Repairs & Painting Begins Wednesday, April 7, 2021

Please Note Change In Liturgy Location During Renovations!

Beginning Wednesday, April 7th the St. Frances of Rome church interior will undergo major interior repairs and renovations. The interior plaster has developed some significant cracks and it needs to be repaired and repainted. This process will take approximately 4-5 weeks to complete. The interior decor will not be changed and the church will maintain its current aesthetic. In order to complete this project in a timely manner, the church will be closed so scaffolding can be put up and remain up throughout this process. The church closure will allow for the work to be completed in a timely manner and allow the workers to proceed without adjusting to liturgy schedules.

Fr. Lou and the St. Frances of Rome Parish Council felt that a project of this scope would best be completed while the church is still under the Covid-19 seating restrictions. The goal is to complete these projects before the church seating limitations are lifted. All St. Frances of Rome liturgies will be held at St. Leonard's church at 440 Zorn Avenue, Louisville, until this project is completed. The St. Frances of Rome's weekday and Sunday liturgy schedule dovetails very easily with St. Leonard's liturgy schedule and will prevent significant adjustments. Both parishes' liturgy times and ministers' schedules for each parish will remain the same. Liturgical minister(s) training will be provided and details will follow. Project progress reports will be available throughout the project via the electronic parish newsletter and in the weekly print bulletin. Contact your parish office of you have specific questions or concerns. Thank you for your understanding, patience and support of this endeavor.

St. Frances of Rome Church is an exquisite treasured pearl and these renovations will maintain her beauty for future generations.

Leonard Ladies Lenten Journey: Imagine

Our next meeting is Wednesday, April 7 at 7:15 pm via Zoom

The next meeting of the Leonard Ladies series Imagine will take place on Wednesday, April 7 at 7:15 pm via Zoom. Our discussion this week will be based on “Episode 10 - Jesus Appears to Mary of Magdala” of the podcast Imagine: A Guide to Jesuit Prayer. After you listen and pray with this episode, we encourage you to ponder the following questions:

  • As you imagine this encounter between Jesus and Mary of Magdala, what words, images, emotions, or other details stand out in your prayer?

  • Imagine this scene from Mary's point-of-view: what is it like to hear Jesus call your name? Imagine Jesus' point-of-view: what is it like to reveal yourself after the resurrection?

  • How do you perceive that Jesus is speaking to you through this prayer experience?

This link will take you directly to this podcast episode on the America website. You can also access additional reflection resources here!

St. Leonard Parish will postpone our traditional Easter Egg Hunt until Pentecost Sunday, May 23rd. We hope that many families will feel comfortable attending Mass and joining us for this fun outdoor event on May 23.

Lent 2021: SERVING THE SUFFERING CHRIST

As we journey through Holy Week, let us reflect on how our Lord suffered from our indifference: those who proclaimed him king of Jerusalem were the same who called to crucify him. We recognize we are all one human family. Are we contributing to the suffering of our sisters and brothers with our indifference to their realities? How does our faith inspire us to care for them and share the gifts that God has bestowed on us?
Rice Bowls can be placed in the collection baskets found at either church entrance at St. Frances of Rome or St. Leonard.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.” Acts 10:38

An astute observer once defined stewardship as “preaching by example.” Christ's good works, His example, remain His most eloquent preaching. The same is true for us.
