Weekly Winter Retreat 2021

We hope you'll continue to join us each Monday for the next four weeks for faith-filled reflections and resources to help you through the winter and COVID blues. This week, our SL/SFR Director of Faith Formation Andrew Hennessy shared his reflections entitled "Begotten, Beloved, Adopted." We look forward to praying with you!

For those of us, like me, who struggle with depression, winter can be a difficult time in normal circumstances. I've learned through years of experience that I need to take care of the whole self: the mental and physical as well as the spiritual. And I also know that I have to be OK with asking for help with that when I need it. I know, too, that prolonged periods of stress can trigger depression and anxiety in people who don't normally struggle with those. And life since March of last year has been one very long period of grinding stress for everyone. So we will be presenting resources each week that we hope will offer some ways to help or look for help. For those who know the battle well and those who are new to it. Let's pray for each other and support each other through this time.

-Fr Lou

The Struggle: Mental Health, Faith, and Self Care in the Covid Winter

I feel anxious, depressed, hopeless, lonely. Why is God allowing this?

God doesn’t cause our suffering, and suffering is not a punishment. Rather, we believe this sort of distress is simply the natural fallout for sin in the world. When humanity abandons God’s grace, guidance, and goodness, we end up miserable. And, since we are one human family, we are often burdened to share in the fallout for sins we didn’t personally commit.

Now, most of us would love to rearrange that situation. But God’s M.O. for redemption isn’t getting rid of suffering from the top down. Instead, Christ transforms it from the bottom up. Jesus offered himself into the depth of human suffering for our redemption, meeting us in our suffering, and making it an opportunity for solidarity, mercy, and conversion.

Suffering can be a chance to turn towards God and grow more holy, but God doesn’t want our suffering to destroy us - that’s why Jesus faced destruction on our behalf. If you're dealing with more than you can you can handle, please seek help both spiritually and medically.

During the Covid pandemic, the Louisville Presbyterian Seminary Counseling Center is offering free Telehealth Services:

Great News - Kentucky Covid Vaccination Registration is Open for Individuals in Phase 1B.

This Phase 1B includes: nonmedical first responders such as police and fire; corrections workers, education – grades K-12 as well as pre-K educators located in a school, people 70 and older.

*If you are a nonmedical first responder, work in corrections or education (K-12), your appointment will be scheduled through your employer. You do not need to take any additional action.

Thanks for a great Family Gathering!

This past Sunday, we had 9 households come together to pray, play, dance, and talk about the meaning of Jesus' baptism and our own. Thanks to all who joined us!

So some of us at St. Frances of Rome are getting together and listening to the Bible (yeah, the whole thing) via podcast this year. The podcast started Jan 1, but you can listen anytime. We are gathering via Zoom every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 6 pm to discuss! Hope you can join us!

Parish Life

Leonard Ladies Lenten Journey: Imagine

January 27 – April 14, Wednesdays at 7:15 pm via Zoom

The Leonard Ladies invite all women of Saint Leonard and Saint Frances of Rome parishes to journey with us through a new series called Imagine. Guided by the 2020 podcast Imagine: A Guide to Jesuit Prayer from America, we will learn how to pray with the Gospels using the technique of Ignatian contemplation. Along the way, we will share faith and fellowship with one another as we prepare for and journey through Lent, and then celebrate Easter together. Click on the link below to learn more! Information about how to log in to our first session will be printed in next week’s newsletter.

A little note: We know from your recent Leonard Ladies survey results that Zoom is not everyone’s favorite format for meeting, and we look forward to the day when it will be safe for us to meet again in-person. Until then, we thank you all for your patience and flexibility!

Outreach

Outreach Update: Living the Good News at St. Leonard

Happy 2021! As we enter into a new year, we want to share an update about the service and social justice initiatives supported by St. Leonard Parish:

Our St. Vincent DePaul Conference continues to respond to our neighbors when they call us for assistance. The pandemic has slowed our volume of calls, but we remain available. Thanks to our dedicated group of members and to the regular alms of our parishioners who make our ministry possible. We also want to give a special shout-out to Rick and Susan Tapp who have been leaders in this ministry for years and are now stepping back due to changed circumstances. Blessings on all!

Our Open Hands volunteers have been on hold as the kitchen is doing box lunches and does not have seating at present.

Our Justice Ministry with CLOUT is extremely active — currently we are in the research phase for our new issue: Community Safety and Equity. We will conduct meetings with various persons in the community to focus how we can make public safety for all. Stayed tuned.

We continue to work on affordable housing specifically-dedicated funding, and our seniors concerns team is working with U of L to open its first Village model. And we monitor the continued commitment of the JCPS to expand restorative practices in all of the schools.

Lastly, please come and join us. Call David Dutschke, Social Concerns Committee Chair (502-905-6908), or Ashley Logsdon, Pastoral Associate (502-897-2595), to find out more about our ministries, what is involved, and how you can become a part of these efforts.

Opportunities for Life Special Collection: January 16 and 17

This weekend, the four Kentucky dioceses will take up a special collection called "Opportunities for Life." This collection during the week of the anniversary of Roe v. Wade (January 22) is part of the Kentucky bishops' unified message advocating for a pro-life culture in our Commonwealth. In the Archdiocese of Louisville, funds from this collection will provide resources to pregnant women and new families in crisis, including material assistance and grant support for programming at Catholic Charities and other organizations providing support to pregnant women and families.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD came and stood there, calling out as before: Samuel, Samuel! Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”” 1 Samuel 3:9-10

Today we hear Samuel respond eagerly, "Here I am" each time the Lord calls him. A steward must be listening for the call of God in one’s life and be ready to respond like Samuel, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

36th Annual Community-wide Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

The Archdiocese of Louisville’s Office of Multicultural Ministry and its African American Catholic Ministries will host its annual Community-wide Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Monday, January 18 at 10:00 am at the Cathedral of the Assumption (433 South Fifth Street, Louisville, KY 40202). The theme is “It’s Time to Repair.” Join Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D., the Archdiocesan Gospel Choir, and others for a service of prayer and praise honoring Dr. King and all that he fought for. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, in-person attendance is limited. Click here to watch the event live. For more information, contact the Office of Multicultural Ministry at 502-471-2146.

“The Unknown King: Why You Need a Class on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Zoom Presentation by Dr. Lewis Brogdon on Thursday, January 21, 2021 at 7:00pm EST.

As racism has emerged as an issue that can no longer be ignored, it is time to do something different. Everyone needs to take Dr. King seriously as a civil rights leader and a radical intellectual leader whose ideas spurred a movement of global change. You are invited to join JustFaith Ministries, in partnership with Simmons College (historically black college), as they help you understand why now more than ever it is important to learn more on Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 22: Day of Prayer for the Protection of Unborn Children

Schedule of events hosted by the Archdiocese of Louisville to commemorate the 48th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade

4:30 p.m.: Gather at the Cathedral of the Assumption

5:00 p.m.: 1.5 mile Prayer Walk (Those unable to walk are welcome to pray along in the Cathedral.)

6:30 p.m. Mass with Archbishop Kurtz at the Cathedral. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, seating is limited to 200 people so please email eharpring@archlou.org or ArchLouYM@archlou.org to reserve a seat. Masks are required for all events.

Food pantry seeking weekday volunteers

The food pantry on the St. Vincent de Paul campus (1015-C South Preston Street) is seeking volunteers on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9 am to noon. The pantry carefully follows COVID-19 protocols - staff, clients, and volunteers all wear masks and rubber gloves - and bagged food is passed out to shoppers with a safe 6-foot distance. The pantry is very short on volunteers this winter and would love extra help if you can spare the time! Please contact Donna Young (502-301-8688; dyoung@svdplou.org) with questions or to get involved!
