"The St. Kate’s Empty Bowls Project epitomizes my belief that art can be a powerful tool for developing meaningful connections and understanding in a world that needs so much. I am grateful for all the students and other individuals who I have had the opportunity to both work with and learn from on this project." - Monica

"The St. Kate's Empty Bowls Project has taught me how art and community has the power to advocate for social justice issues in our larger community. It allows people to create and be a part of something meaningful that will touch the lives of so many in so many different ways. As part of Monica’s ceramics classes, students complete service-learning with the St. Kate’s Empty Bowls Project and Open Arms of Minnesota.
Students facilitate bowl-making events for those in our community (no previous experience needed), as well as make bowls specifically for our project to be used for a fundraising meal of soup and bread.
These students also help to facilitate the Soup Socials which bring the community together.
As part of this class, students are able to engage more deeply with the St Kate's Bowls Project as an example of Art and Social Practice.
Students explore the larger context of Social Practice and its history of raising awareness/advocacy of social justice issues through engagement.
In addition to facilitating all aspects of the St Kate’s Empty Bowls Project, students research a social justice issue of importance to them and develop a proposal for a social practice project to evoke change in that area.
