Summer newsletter of the Doctor of Physical Therapy and Physical Therapist Assistant programs
We congratulated and celebrated our PTA Class of 2026 this spring and look forward to welcoming in our new 2028 cohort this fall. As I reflect on the past academic year, the word that comes to mind is collaboration. Our students, DPT and PTA faculty, and departments across the University have engaged in meaningful collaboration over the past academic year.
Students: Our strong PTA Class of 2027 recently finished 2 weeks of collaborative learning with the 1st year DPT students in preparation for their community engaged learning experiences this fall. Together the students engaged in learning about identity, culture, values, privilege, bias, racism, and social change. New this year, was their participation in a blended learning program from the Constructive Dialogue Institute (CDI) called Perspectives. This program introduced students to important mindsets and skills for engaging across differences and disagreement. Our students will continue collaborative learning this summer with the current 2nd year DPT class as we prepare for an educational session focused on the healthcare needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. I have been working closely with DPT assistant professor, Becky Horton, in planning the session and inviting guests from the LGBTQIA+ community to come and share their lived experiences, as patients, with our students.
Faculty: Prior to introducing the CDI Perspectives work with our students, all DPT and PTA faculty and staff engaged in the online learning and partnered up to practice the skills with structured peer-to-peer conversations. Faculty and staff from both programs also spent time this past year reading The 5 Languages of Appreciation in the Workplace and we identified our individual preferred languages and brainstormed strategies for enhancing the department’s culture by showing meaningful appreciation for one another. Finally, we continued our ongoing “Belonging in Rehab” series by reading and discussing The Inclusive Leader by Dr. Artika Tyner with colleagues from the OT and OTA departments.
Departmental: Over the past year, faculty and staff have collaborated with Dean Sean Fitzpatrick in his efforts to better align and utilize current resources within the Henrietta Schmoll School of Health Sciences (HSSH). One outcome of this work is a new organizational structure that grouped departments with similar interests and needs into new divisions. Our division includes the PTA, DPT, Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS), and grad OT programs.
We look forward to the next academic year and finding new ways to collaborate and strengthen our program.

Another year has gone by with another stellar group of St. Kate’s DPT graduates. We are excited for all of their professional and personal next steps! They are headed to residencies, physical therapy employment in all settings across the Midwest, studying for the NPTE exam, and hopefully a little time for themselves after three years of dedicated work in graduate school.
I was fortunate to take a sabbatical during Spring semester. Being able to step away from the daily responsibilities in order to focus on specific projects was a true gift, and I am grateful to my DPT colleagues and to St. Kate’s for all they did to make this sabbatical a reality. The highlight was collaborating with St. Kate’s colleagues, Dr. Ambria Crusan (Nutrition) and Dr. Kristen Maisano (OTA/MAOT), to deliver a Train the Trainer session with our long-time partner in Tanzania, Kafika House. Presenting at the World Congress of OT conference in Bangkok was a close second!
The DPT Program was in very capable hands while I was away with Dr. Cort Cieminski graciously stepping back into the Program Director role on an interim basis. An extra-special thank you is in order, because this was Cort’s final semester with the DPT Program as he retired at the end of May. Thank you, Cort!
As St. Kate’s changed their calendar to move away from a J-Term, we are currently living into some new organizational structure to our courses. While the content is largely the same (with the exception of the typical review and updates), you might see different course numbers and names being referenced by faculty/staff and students. One significant change is how we are delivering our community engagement (formerly called service-learning). The first year DPT and PTA students just finished their two weeks of preparation for community involvement with a hybrid course. They will be partnered with community organizations for the fall semester to engage in direct service and meaningful projects. More to come in the fall!
Meanwhile, the faculty and students continue to do amazing work in our program. I hope you enjoy reading about their latest activities and accomplishments.
We are excited to share that we will be returning to the Minnesota State Fair this summer to continue our research and community engagement efforts! In 2025 and with a team of over 50 volunteers, we collected data on nearly 1,800 participants who engaged in five physical performance measures: grip strength, gait speed, 2-minute step test, 30 second sit to stand, and a weighted ball toss.
Building on the success of last year’s work, we will be returning to collect data in order to better understand the communities that we serve. We’re currently looking for volunteers who are interested in helping us at the State Fair. If you’re willing to help for a few hours or several days, your support would make a meaningful contribution to the project. If you’re interested in volunteering or learning more, please let us know by completing this Google Form.

As some of you may know, I officially retired from St. Kate’s as of June 1, 2026. I’ll still be involved in APTA at the state and national level, but I am ready and excited (and just a little bit sad) to begin this new phase of life. It has been the honor of a lifetime to have worked with so many of you as students, CIs and/or colleagues. I have been especially blessed to have witnessed the amazing effort and sacrifices our PTA students make to be successful in our program. Many of them work many more hours than we recommend while trying to make ends meet. In a small attempt to help, my husband, Paul, and I have created the St. Catherine University PTA Advancing Movement Scholarship Fund. Our goal was to raise $10,000 by fall 2027 so that we could start giving out a $1000 scholarship each fall to two students in financial need. Because we’ve had such a great response to this, we are almost at our goal and hope to start issuing scholarships for fall 2026! If you would like to support our students via a tax-deductible contribution, please do so at https://ssl.charityweb.net/stkate/advancingmovement.htm.
Thank you for everything you all do for our patients and our program!
