Project Title: Examining Homelessness Among Native Populations: A Social Work Perspective on Social Justice.
Presentation Date: May 2nd, 2025 | 4:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
My project delves into the pressing issue of homelessness among Native American communities, highlighting both the historical context and the ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous peoples. A pivotal conversation with an anonymous Native source revealed powerful insights, including reflections on the cultural and spiritual significance of the ""Sweat Lodge"" ceremony. Through this lens, the work examines how historical trauma—from colonization to forced relocation—has deeply impacted the well-being and stability of Native populations today. It connects these enduring legacies to contemporary issues, including homelessness, which disproportionately affects Native Americans due to systemic inequities and discriminatory housing policies.
By exploring key historical events such as the Indian Removal Act, the effects of slavery among Native peoples, and their painful experiences with forced assimilation, this work advocates for greater cultural understanding and systemic change. The role of social workers in addressing these disparities is crucial, as they can empower Native communities through advocacy, policy change, and culturally competent support. Ultimately, the goal is to amplify awareness and foster a deeper recognition of Native American resilience, while prioritizing the development of sustainable solutions to eradicate homelessness and safeguard Native rights in today's society.

Project Title: Play It Forward: A Qualitative Exploration of Physical Activity Programs for Preadolescent Girls
Presentation Date: April 11th, 2025 | 4:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
Physical activity during preadolescence is essential for creating lifelong health and well-being among girls. Despite its importance, participation rates among preadolescent girls remain significantly lower than those of boys due to various social, environmental, and programmatic barriers. Addressing these challenges requires the integration of adequate physical activity programs tailored to the unique needs of this population. While some programs have achieved measurable success, others have struggled due to limited adaptability, insufficient inclusivity, and a lack of mentorship. From both local and national perspectives, many physical activity initiatives share common goals, whether through sports-specific programs or general fitness promotion. Research indicates that programs with mentorship attributes tend to be the most effective, as they provide relatable figures who inspire and motivate young girls. An expanded database was developed to support this effort, cataloging existing programs to increase physical activity among preadolescent girls. Recognizing the importance of female representation, the latter portion of this study explores the integration of ice skating into a local community physical education class. By serving as a female role model for both boys and girls, I intervened to promote early education and empowerment, promoting active, healthy lifestyles from a young age. This initiative emphasizes the power of mentorship and community involvement, demonstrating how investing in the next generation can create meaningful, lasting opportunities that inspire girls to embrace lifelong physical activity.

Why St. Kate's?
I was drawn to St. Kate’s because of its highly regarded medical programs and I knew I wanted to study exercise and sports science, Pre-Physical Therapy. This university gave me the perfect opportunity to do so, coupled with playing hockey at the collegiate level. The location just outside of St. Paul makes St. Kate’s the perfect blend of a secluded and safe environment with close proximity to city life. So far my experience at St. Kate’s has been nothing short of amazing as the professors and staff are extremely personable and supportive of my goals and there is always something new and exciting happening on campus.
Favorite honors class!
My favorite honors class so far has been a women’s studies and ageism course where we worked with the Sisters of St. Joseph and met weekly to capture their life stories. We got to write narratives about them after talking for nearly two hours every week which was a fun new style of learning instead of the traditional lecture style of teaching.

Following my undergraduate degree, my intention is to pursue my Doctorate of Physical Therapy at St. Kate’s. Upon completing graduate school, I aspire to find a job as a traveling physical therapist, enabling me to both explore the world and continue my professional career simultaneously.

Project Title: Uncovering the Queer History of St. Kate's
Presentation Date: April 11th, 2025 | 3:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
Queer history has often been overlooked or hidden, leaving significant gaps in our understanding of the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in various communities and institutions. Given that relationships now often reinterpreted through a queer lens have been highly prevalent in homosocial spaces like women’s colleges and convents, it is very possible that St. Kate’s is an environment where queer identities, bonds, and viewpoints have been able to flourish. The goal of this project is to explore how St. Catherine University’s intersecting identities as a Catholic, women’s, and social justice oriented institution have shaped the attitudes of its students, staff, faculty, and administration about LGBTQ+ issues and identities. Further, it aims to illuminate how having a queer identity impacted the experiences of students and to reevaluate the relationships that women at St. Kate’s engaged in, recognizing historical norms around acceptable women’s relationships but also uncovering examples now perceived as instances of queerness. This project primarily involves archival research utilizing materials from the St. Catherine University archives, which is supported by the reading of secondary sources to give historical contexts to the stories being revealed and motivate new research angles. It culminates in a digital exhibit that allows community members to engage with archival resources that illustrate the queer history of St. Kate’s from its founding to the present. Preliminary work suggests that the Catholic identity of the university played a large role in its official viewpoints, often to the detriment of public acceptance of LGBTQ+ identities, though relationships that can be read as queer in the current day have been present, if hidden, over a long period in spite of this. Goals to empower women with minority identities and commitments to social justice have driven St. Kate’s to be increasingly more inclusive over time, though there is still room to grow.
About J
Why St. Kate's?
I chose St. Kate’s because I liked the idea of being in an environment where there are small classes and you can get to know your peers and professors, and I appreciated the liberal arts and social justice focus of the school. I wanted to be somewhere where I could combine my major in data science with my interests in the social sciences and humanities and learn how to apply quantitative skills to important issues in the world.
I have really appreciated these elements so far, and all the opportunities that being at a smaller school with welcoming and dedicated professors has given me. Having the ability to work on multiple different research projects during my time here and to explore my interests through class projects, experiential learning trips, and more has given me a truly interdisciplinary education and I am so grateful for that.
Favorite honors class!
So far, my favorite honors course has been Mni Sota Makoce and Settler Colonialism: Communication and Theological Perspectives, taught by Dr. Margret McCue-Enser and Dr. Vincent Skemp. Going into the course, I did not know much about Indigenous culture or traditional practices, current events around Indigenous activism, or much about Christian (or other) theologies, so it was exciting to learn about all three of these and see how the disciplines of theology and communications intersect and can be applied to more specific topics like Indigenous studies.
After graduation?
I am not sure yet what I will do after graduating but I look forward to spending the next year continuing to explore my options and dive into my interests so that I am better prepared to answer this question as that time approaches.

Project Title: Arts Integration in the Classroom: Reader's Theater and Parts of a Story
Presentation Date: March 7th, 2025 | 3:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
In my experience as an educator and theater artist, I have observed several potential benefits of integrating drama into the general curriculum. Primarily, theater can be used to help students build social-emotional skills, engage with their creativity, and develop their literacy and communication skills. Despite these being common goals for educators, theater education and programs are often a low priority for schools. If teachers had more theater-based resources that could be implemented in the classroom while meeting core learning goals, more students could reap the benefits of theater education. The purpose of this project is to provide a tool for teachers to support literacy skills by integrating dramatic texts and principles in the elementary ELA curriculum. This two-week unit plan is designed to be used in a fourth grade classroom to help students meet three Minnesota state standards surrounding the parts of a story, theme, and different types of text. The plan is supplemented by a series of short reader’s theater scenes for students to read, analyze, and perform, as well as some examples of games and activities to build theater skills. In addition to meeting the standards, additional goals of this plan are to provide a joyful learning experience, support oral reading skills, build confidence, and strengthen teamwork skills and social bonds.

Why St. Kate's?
One of the main reasons I chose St. Kate's was the community, and that continues to be what I appreciate most about it. Coming from out of state, I didn't know anyone and I was completely new to Minnesota. However, I felt welcomed into the St. Kate's community and I met some wonderful people who would become my friends. St. Kate's faculty and students come together to create a positive, supportive, and constructive learning environment where we can help each other and celebrate our successes. I see kind, strong, determined leaders in my fellow students - people who will change the world for the better.

I chose St. Kate’s because it was the only school I applied to that I could envision myself enjoying and it checked my boxes. Throughout my time at St. Kate’s, I have appreciated being a part of the Katies for Aging Research and Equity (KARE) Program. The KARE Program has provided me with a community of students who are passionate about scientific research and offered me the opportunity to conduct research at a competitive institution that I wouldn’t have fathomed being able to otherwise. My confidence in my future as a scientific researcher has strengthened because of the resources the KARE program has provided me with. Additionally, I have split my time between St. Kate’s and Hamline because my major isn’t offered here, and because of that I haven’t really felt as a part of a science community, but the KARE program has alleviated that feeling.

Project Abstract
Our study attempts to evaluate the impact of celebrity voice in politics on the electoral landscape. This is manifested in voter registration rates, voter turnout, and voter support towards individual candidates. Previous research has shown that celebrity endorsements can be a good thing, if done right. Various studies have shown that younger generations are more heavily influenced by celebrity endorsements than their counterparts. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic brought about a shift in the parasocial relationships that fans were forming online with the celebrities that they follow. We hypothesize that this change in interest and dependency on celebrity opinion will carry over into the political realm, making celebrities desired spokespeople for more than just products and brands, but for votes. Using data from the 2020 presidential election we’ve examined how celebrities can utilize social media to influence election outcomes, and even win in office themselves. Our aim is to determine the causes contributing to this development in the social expectations of celebrities, and use them to analyze how entertainment media impacts individual voter preference.
We have come to expect that celebrities have and share political opinions. But do they have an impact on who fans vote for? This political influence is powered by social media, so we aim to find out if celebrities actually have influence over election results and how media platforms function to serve that influence.

Project Title: Heads: Reintroducing Jerry Rudquist
Presentation Date: March 7th, 2025 | 4:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"This presentation offers a look into the worlds of art documentation and curation as they pertain to the work of the Minnesota artist Jerry Rudquist (1934-2001). Living, working, and creating during the second half of the 20th century, Rudquist produced a body of work that spans materials, styles, subject matter, and decades. In the 23 years since Rudquist’s passing, new needs surrounding the updated documentation of and reintroduction to his collection have emerged. Work with Rudquist’s collection includes developing a system for documenting and digitizing hundreds of his artworks and curating an exhibition that explores his ‘head studies.’ The former objective relates to the goal of preserving the artist’s work in a digital archive reliant on upgraded technology; the last database was created in 2014. The latter relates to re-introducing the work of a prolific local artist and will augment a separate joint exhibition curated by Monica Rudquist, Jerry’s daughter and clay artist. In order to document and digitize Rudquist’s work, I have captured high-resolution photographs, gathered metadata including measurements and medium for Rudquist’s paintings, prints, and drawings, as well as created a database to house the images and metadata. Curatorial work is ongoing and will culminate in the opening of an exhibition in February 2025. At this time, the curatorial process includes selecting the paintings, conducting oral history interviews with those who knew Rudquist and his work best, and considering how archival materials can be integrated into the exhibition. Both goals, documenting and curating, aim to make Rudquist’s work accessible in a new way and add to conversations surrounding the artist’s life and work. In addition to aiding the preservation of Rudquist’s artwork and memory, this project provides insight into the relationship between art documentation and curation, and how the former is a necessary part of the latter.

Project Title: Born Into Disparity: The Truth about Health Care Disparities Black Women Face in Pregnancy and Birth
Presentation Date: April 4th, 2025 | 3:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
Black women, regardless of socioeconomic status or education level, face disproportionately worse health outcomes during pregnancy and childbirth. Despite advancements in maternal healthcare, these disparities persist due to systemic racism, implicit bias, and historical inequalities within the healthcare system. In this podcast, I examine the various health risks that Black women (of any ethnic background) encounter during these significant stages of their lives. Through each episode, I will share historical background, key statistics, expert insights, and first-hand accounts to tell a story of the maternity journey for Black women. This podcast aspires to deepen my understanding of the systemic issues Black women face in maternity care and to raise awareness about these disparities among listeners. By educating the audience, I hope to empower individuals to advocate for themselves and their loved ones. Being more informed about potential difficulties and their healthcare options will help individuals anticipate these challenging situations and advocate for better care. The desired outcome of this project is to promote a broader conversation about addressing these issues and improving maternity care for Black women.

Project Title: Exploring the Impact of Cancer Treatments on the Emotional and Mental Well-Being of Patients, Survivors, and Their Supporters
Presentation Date: May 2nd, 2025| 3:30 PM| Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"Cancer isn’t just a physical illness- it’s an emotional and mental struggle for both patients and their loved ones. My honors project focuses on understanding the mental health challenges that arise during one’s cancer journey, with an emphasis on personal interviews. Conversations with patients, caregivers, and family members who have experienced cancer firsthand form the center of this research, giving raw, personal insights into the emotional impact of the disease.
The interviews aim to uncover how individuals navigate the psychological challenges of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, as well as the support systems they rely on, or wish they had. These stories will help shed light on the gaps in mental health care within oncology and highlight areas where healthcare providers can better address emotional well-being.
This project will include a brief historical overview of cancer treatments, illustrating how advancements in medicine have shaped patient care over time. However, the primary goal is to amplify the voices of those directly affected by cancer and use their perspectives to advocate for a more holistic approach to care. By focusing on the lived experiences of patients and families, this project seeks to inspire improvements in mental health resources and mental health care in oncology."

Presentation Date: May 9th, 2025 | 2:00 PM| Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"The CSJ garden was started with a simple vision in mind: a space for gathering, service, and stewardship to the earth. Over 20 years later, the garden still grows community--both old and --with each new season. This documentary commemorates the 20th anniversary of the CSJ (formerly Celeste's Dream) Garden, a community garden dedicated to growing food, fostering intergenerational relationships, and care for the earth and one another. It explores the garden's role in addressing food insecurity and food justice through FAH. Gardener interviews, footage of harvests, and archive photos capture the stories, memories, and lessons learned by gardeners over the years--showcasing how the garden has evolved as both a physical space and a gathering place for our community."

Project Title: The Healthcare System Developing More Health Issues: An Analysis of the Issues Within The United State’s Healthcare Industry
Presentation Date: March 21st, 2025 | 4:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"Racism is central in our society. It determines the way governments operate, laws being made, and can have a substantial impact on the lives of those around us. One of the biggest examples of racism is seen through inequality in the healthcare system.
Overall, what does this inequality look like and where does it come from? How does this impact the health and wellbeing of those around us? In this paper, I identify key ways racism is seen in our healthcare system through diagnoses and quality of care and explain the impact this has on those individuals. I also look at how racial inequalities effect providers being able to provide adequate care and receive the career they want.
Then, I recognize key roots to this problem and how other aspects like income and availability of resources deepen the issues of inequality in the healthcare system. Through this, racism is identified as a central aspect of society that controls the lives of BIPOC individuals.
After, one might ask, hasn’t something been done? In which then we dive into the reforms that have been made to address with healthcare inequalities which are shown to be very minimal. From these reforms, it is clear that these injustices still persist, so we look into what can be done to address these inequalities now.
Within the State of Minnesota, we look at leaders of our state creating measurable goals of occurrences of inequality and how many people need to be involved and committed to this cause to see change. Through this, Saint Catherine University is called to action due to our mission of leading and influencing those around us. Community members are given opportunities to get involved and ways to work together to work towards equality like reaching out to leaders of our state and educating those around us. Without collaborative effort, inequality will persist not just in our community, but in the country as a whole"

Project Title: Day Terrors
Presentation Date: May 9th, 2025 | 1:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
In high school, I woke up one morning from a bad dream with a huge creative inspiration. The whiplash of emotions was enough to get me to work on it immediately, but due to some roadblocks in my life I’d have to put the project on a back burner until I got the right opportunity. I quickly drafted what I could of a story called Day Terrors - which I envisioned as a comic. I knew I could write and draw - the challenge would be how and when. The story would take place close to my heart, in the Twin Cities, and would examine humanity, identity, and teenage shenanigans with a supernatural twist. I’ve been an artist my whole life, and I’ve always wanted to use it to tell a story. All of the artistic choices were intentional, I wanted the atmosphere of the comic to be somewhat unnerving by using washed out colors and giving the characters a distinct style, to mimic the anxiety I always felt in high school, and reflect the main character’s view of the world. Working on this project definitely tested my skills in terms of time management and work ethic, but most of all, it proved to myself that doing things like this is far from impossible. Anyone with a creative vision can make something - in a summer, in 4 years, in 15, or their entire lives.

Project Title: Inclusive Movement: A Partnership Between St. Kate's and Focus Beyond
Presentation Date: April 25th, 2025 at 4:00 - 4:30 PM
Project Abstract
With this project I created a sustainable connection between St. Catherine University and Focus Beyond (FB). FB is a program for students ages 18-22 with disabilities where they are supported in their transition out of high school. The aim is to create opportunities for students at both organizations to make meaningful friendships with one another. This connection also provides an opportunity for St. Kate’s students to spend quality time with people of all abilities.
The connection between St. Kate’s and FB was established in partnership and with the support of the St. Kate’s Special Olympics Unified Club, Special Olympics Minnesota, FB Developmental Adaptive Physical Education (DAPE) educators, the Office of Scholarly Engagement, and many others. During the 2024-25 academic year Special Olympics Unified hosted FB on the St. Kate’s campus every Friday for a DAPE class. Students participated in activities such as dancing led by Oula dance instructors, basketball, and open gym.
In addition to establishing a connection between FB and St. Kate’s, the second aim of this project was to create a curriculum for a course which incorporates the partnership with FB. The goal of this course is to give St. Kate’s students the opportunity to learn about DAPE and Developmental Adaptive movement in the classroom and then apply what they learn and see it in action while participating in DAPE classes with FB. The curriculum for this course embodies the emphasis on hands on learning and mission of St. Kate’s as a whole. My hope is to continue to work with St. Kate’s and departments such as Exercise and Sport Science to further develop and eventually offer the course designed as a part of this project to St. Kate’s students.

Project Title: Medicinal Plants for the Midwesterner: An Introductory Guide to Traditional Medicine & Herbal Remedies
Presentation Date: May 9th, 2025 | 2:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"Knowledge of how to use medicinal plants has been cultivated by Native and Indigenous peoples for centuries, but many people today have never been exposed to this information or struggle to find it. There is a wide variety of medicinal plants across the globe, contrasting opinions about their use and effectiveness, and unclear information that often doesn’t follow through from what a plant can be used for to finding that particular plant or exactly how to use it. Often, once a search for a remedy reveals an appropriate plant, that plant is not native/common in the person’s area. This means using that medicinal plant can be expensive and unsustainable, especially if it is from a distant location which requires importing the plant or purchasing pre-processed plant-based products. Many sources for medicinal plant use do not include sourcing or evidence for their information, which is crucial to giving context and credibility to the plants’ uses, regardless of whether it is from traditional or research-based evidence.
This booklet aims to be a reliable source for finding evidence-based information on the use and context for medicinal plants. It also includes a geographical-specific component: plants discussed in this booklet are native to or commonly found in the Midwest. Anyone in the region should be able to find them within a few hours of their home! This book considers both traditional and modern medicinal practices collaboratively. This way, any individual can rely on the information for bettering their health without needing to choose between traditional practices or western ones. "

Project Title: Advocacy Across Disciplines: Inspiring Action Through Inclusive Narratives
Presentation Date: March 7th, 2025 | 3:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
As we age, our understanding of the word "normal" is developed, being defined by how social norms or perceptions of normality change over time. It is such a simple yet crucial word in the dictionary. Why? This word affects our economy, interactions, and worldview. This one word can promote appreciation for diversity and drive positive change. However, it can also foster discrimination by deeming certain variations unacceptable. The reasons for this are unclear, but it is evident that societal changes are necessary for each person's version of this word to be accepted. Awareness is key to making these changes. Without awareness, no change can be made, and what better place to be educated about these changes than at the university you attend? Even though every disability or consideration cannot be covered in a single classroom, leaving room to discuss, educate, and provoke curiosity is necessary when learning about various populations, including the disability community. In the form of an upper-level, writing-intensive course, this project emphasizes the need for awareness about different disabilities. It encourages students to be activists in their community and future professions while also questioning their definition of the word "normal," encouraging students to challenge different viewpoints they have otherwise just accepted until now as "normal."

Project Abstract
"During Emma’s time at St. Kate’s she gained knowledge of the complexities of public health and its involvement in everyday life. This knowledge, although interesting and incredibly important, was not shared by the vast majority of people. Sydney focused on a completely different major and did not receive very much knowledge about the public health sphere. With that in mind,
Outbreak Outtakes: Hidden Stories in Public Health is a podcast created by Sydney and Emma to make public health information accessible and interesting. Public health is intertwined within our everyday lives, but many people don’t realize. By combining Emma’s public health knowledge and Sydney’s curiosity for the field, this podcast will reveal some hidden truths about public health history. Sydney and Emma created a three episode podcast series. Each episode consisted of public health information and stories shared by Emma with questions and commentary added by Sydney. This commentary allows us to make sure information is understandable and digestible by including a representation of a non-public health major. A website was also created with transcripts of the records to emphasize accessibility and allow Sydney to practice her marketing skills. The creation of these episodes allowed both of us to learn valuable skills. Sydney improved her knowledge and gradually increased her understanding every episode and Emma practiced conveying information to others in a digestible way. Each of us had an amazing opportunity to practice our passions and create a project that we can share with others. "

Project Title: A Path to Wellness: Addressing Physical Activity Barriers and Promoting Health at St. Catherine University
Presentation Date: December 6th, 2024 | 3:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Watch Yasmin's Presentation: Yasmin's Presentation Video
Project Abstract
To gain insights into the exercise behaviors on campus, I intend to conduct qualitative research to uncover the barriers that prevent St. Catherine University students, faculty, and staff from participating in physical activity. In collaboration with the Public Health Department, I will statistically analyze the research findings to determine how St. Catherine University, as both an institution and community, can best support individuals in being active.
Additionally, I am committed to developing informative walking guides tailored to the St. Catherine University campus community. These walking guides will be showcased on an interactive website designed to offer valuable resources on the health benefits of exercise, as well as information about nearby parks and recreational activities. While my project aims to serve the entire St. Catherine University community, the primary target audience for my website is first-year undergraduate students. As new members of the St. Catherine University community, these students will find this website beneficial in establishing or maintaining effective physical activity habits.
My interactive website will be housed within the Antonion Honor's department and the Exercise is Medicine-On Campus club. I hope this initiative serves as a meaningful resource for new students and encourages a culture of health and well-being on campus.

Project Title: Historical Gaps, Immersive Experiences, Higher Education Preparation: Awareness and Exploration of Implementation Models For Bilingual Students
Presentation Date: April 25th, 2025 | 3:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
The current education system has taught us that it's not working for everyone. It has been criticized for its failure to meet the needs of all students, particularly bilingual learners. While some schools have made progress, many remain stagnant and still struggle to provide diverse, inclusive, and culturally responsive environments that engage or connect with bilingual students, especially in high school, where preparation for higher education begins. Despite some efforts, there is a persistent gap in educational opportunities that needs to be uncovered for bilingual students. This project seeks to address the issue by exploring historical attempts, cross-cultural experiences, and contemporary models that aim to support minority students who are also bilingual learners and close these gaps. A notable theme is the rise of Spanish bilingual immersion programs, which challenge traditional educational structures and beliefs and offer new possibilities for minority students. The goal is to raise awareness about these initiatives, foster cross-cultural understanding, and push forth the implementation of inclusive educational practices. Ultimately, the project strives to amplify the voices of bilingual students who have gone through the system, providing a framework for future educational reforms that prepare them for higher education and a more equitable future. This project will consist of a written research essay with some visuals, an oral presentation, and a written poem to commemorate student voices. By combining historical insight with modern pedagogical strategies, this work contributes to the ongoing conversation about creating a more inclusive, responsive educational system for all students.

Project Title: Examining the Probability of Fine Art Majors Pursuing Advanced Degrees
Presentation Date: March 21st, 2025 | 4:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
This paper examines the factors influencing Fine Art majors' decisions to pursue advanced degrees, such as Master's or Doctoral programs, following their undergraduate education. By analyzing personal motivations, professional aspirations, financial considerations, and career goals, the study seeks to understand the likelihood of Fine Art students continuing their academic journey and the key influences behind these decisions. The paper also addresses the unique challenges faced by art students, where the value of advanced degrees is not always as clear-cut as in other fields, and where career success often depends more on factors such as portfolio, professional connections, and exhibition experience than on formal qualifications. Ultimately, this essay aims to provide a deeper understanding into the decision-making process of Fine Art students to pursue advanced degrees and offers academic institutions insight as to why students may or may not choose to pursue graduate or doctoral programs.

Project Title: Introduction to Interfaith Environmentalism
Presentation Date: May 9th, 2025 | 1:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
The interplay between faiths and environmentalism has existed long before environmentalism became a field of study. Rather than being a prescription, environmental sustainability was an identity, embedded into the way of life through religions and faiths. The mechanisms of faith based practices in relation to sustainability has inspired the development of this course. This course will teach students about various religious and faith based teachings that inform the adoption of an environmental perspective which influences people's actions and lifestyle. The purpose of this course is to teach students about the connection and impact religion and faiths have had on individuals' sustainable traditions. This will familiarize students with concepts of sustainability and by providing them with a broad understanding of interfaith approaches to environmental stewardship. This class engaging and relatable for students, by drawing on the experiences of others from different populations, demographics, and communities and connecting it with their own identities and experiences. Students from various disciplines and majors may take this course and it will provide a framework for integrating sustainability into their overall education and way of life.

Project Title: Alphabet Soup: The Portrayal and Perception of the Central Intelligence Agency in Film
Presentation Date: April 4th, 2025 | 3:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has been at the forefront of the American public’s minds during historical events such as the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 (Friedman, 2012). Despite not being in the eye of the public near the beginning of its inception in 1947, the CIA undoubtedly has remained in the limelight throughout its history as its failures are more widely known than its successes. Previous research in the perception of film and television in regards to portrayals of psychopaths and forensic investigations show that people’s perceptions are influenced by these inaccurate portrayals (Davis et al., 2020; Maeder & Corbett, 2015). This research study will observe the portrayal of the CIA in film during its inception to present day through analyzing the highest-grossing and well-known spy films during different periods. Films such as Three Days of the Condor (1972), The Good Shepherd (2006), Argo (2012), and Central Intelligence (2016), among others, will be observed. The highest-grossing spy films have been viewed more than lesser-grossing films, which is why they are being studied. Observing films from 1947 to present day may shed light on how the perception and portrayal of the CIA has changed over time. Additionally, noteworthy events that may have influenced the portrayal and perception of the CIA in films will be noted, such as The Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture (2014). Historically, films have been controlled strictly by the CIA, but more recently, Hollywood has been given leeway in the CIA’s portrayal, allowing a more negative stance to be taken (Willmetts, 2013, pp. 128-129). The increased freedom to no longer portray the CIA only in a positive light but the increased access to information about the CIA’s failures via the internet may contribute to the change of portrayal and perception of the CIA through film.

Project Title: Bridging Healthcare Disparities: An Educational Initiative to Improve Front-line Providers’ Interactions with Marginalized Communities
Presentation Date: April 25th, 2025 | 4:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"Disadvantaged populations, including LGBTQ+, Hmong, and elderly individuals, often face significant challenges in healthcare settings, leading to negative experiences, mistrust, and poorer health outcomes. These groups are more likely to encounter discrimination, cultural misunderstandings, and inadequate communication with healthcare professionals, which can deter them from seeking care and following medical recommendations. To address these disparities, this training module is designed to educate front-line healthcare workers on the unique needs and concerns of these populations. The module is accessible, easy to use, and incorporates real-world examples to provide practical strategies for improving patient interactions. By enhancing cultural competence and communication skills, this training aims to foster more inclusive healthcare environments, reduce disparities in care, and increase patients' willingness to engage with the healthcare system. Ultimately, improving healthcare workers’ education in these areas can lead to more equitable treatment and better health outcomes for marginalized communities."

Presentation Date: April 4th, 2025 | 4:00 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"Class of...: 90 years of St. Kate's Fashion" showcases the items of the university historical dress collection, as well as the photo collection of the university archives. This exhibit combines archival photos of St. Kate's students and breathes new life into them using historical clothing items to provide a visual narrative of college student fashions since the 1930s. In 1935, Harper's Bazaar wrote, “[The College girl’s] contribution to fashion is as American as Coca-Cola, baseball and hitch hiking.” The fashion of St. Kate's students reflects commitments over time to camaraderie, education, service, and building a collective identity.

Project Title: To Be Known: Exhibiting the Pre-Columbian Objects of St. Catherine University
Presentation Date: May 2nd | 2:30 pm | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"Objects and artifacts have many lifetimes. They are created and born, they travel, live in different homes, they fall apart and come back together again. This project seeks to explore the significance of St. Kate’s Pre-Columbian objects throughout their many lifetimes. There are stories that accompany these objects, such as their original contexts, the intent behind their creation, and the value they hold for those who have loved them. Working with these objects we can highlight their humanity and uncover the remnants of all that has touched them before.
Whether they served practical functions in daily life or were integral to spiritual practices, we can explore the ongoing connection between these objects and today’s viewers. Displayed in an exhibition format, traditional curation and display methods will be challenged through the creation of an immersive, contextual environment where both the objects and their histories are given prominence. Through an emphasis on storytelling, this project aims to make learning about art and culture more accessible and meaningful. By confronting our curiosities about value and cultural meaning, the project hopes to contribute to a deeper understanding of art and object's role in shaping societal perspectives and histories."

Project Title: Shockwaves and Stimulus: How the Market Fought Two Crashes
Presentation Date: April 11th, 2025 | 4:30 PM | Visual Arts Building
Project Abstract
"This study explores how the U.S. stock market responded to the 2008 financial crisis compared to the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on market volatility, sector performance, and the role of government stimulus. While both crises triggered major market downturns, the 2008 crash led to prolonged instability, whereas the COVID-19 selloff was steep but short-lived. Sector impacts varied as well—2008 hit the financial sector hardest, shaking investor confidence in the banking system, while the pandemic disproportionately affected travel and hospitality but fueled a surge in technology and e-commerce stocks. A key difference in recovery speed stemmed from government intervention: the slow, cautious rollout of TARP and quantitative easing in 2008 contrasted with the rapid, large-scale relief efforts of 2020, like direct stimulus checks and business loans, which helped restore market confidence almost immediately. Beyond policy, the fast rebound during COVID-19 was also driven by a collective push to restore normalcy—investors, businesses, and policymakers all worked to adapt quickly, from remote work innovations to aggressive economic support. Using historical market data, economic models, and graphical representations of aggregate demand shifts, this research highlights the evolving role of government and social response in shaping financial recoveries. These findings provide insight into crisis management strategies and the power of both policy and collective action in stabilizing markets.

Project Title: Balancing Patient Care and Sonographer Well-Being: The Critical Role of Ergonomics in Ultrasound
Presentation Date:
Project Abstract
Ultrasound is one of the most commonly used imaging tools in healthcare. It is safer, more affordable, and easier to access than many other medical imaging modalities. Through my clinical experience, I have seen how important ultrasound is for detecting diseases early and assisting in procedures. However, while patient care is always the priority, the physical strain on sonographers is often overlooked. Sonographer burnout and injury, often stemming from physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion, is an increasing concern in healthcare. One major contributing factor is the repetitive physical strain caused by long hours of scanning, awkward positions, and repetitive movements. These work-related stressors put sonographers at high risk for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs), leading to chronic pain, fatigue, and in some cases, it can be career ending. To address this issue, ergonomics has become an essential focus for protecting sonographers’ well-being. Implementing proper scanning techniques, using ergonomically friendly equipment, and fostering awareness about body mechanics can reduce the physical toll of scanning and prevent injury. The goal of my project is to raise awareness about the importance of ergonomics in ultrasound and to promote practical solutions that can help protect sonographers from burnout and physical harm. I aim to advocate for more proactive approaches to ergonomics in healthcare settings. Ultimately, ensuring that sonographers are equipped with the right tools and knowledge will lead to a healthier workforce and improved patient care in the long run.
