Digital Footprint

“Don’t say anything online that you wouldn’t want plastered on a billboard.” These very wise words come from Erin Bury who talks about digital footprints. You might already know this, but every single thing you do, search, post, copy, screenshot, or follow is recorded. This is your digital footprint.

Many people know about your digital footprint, but did you know that it lasts forever? It is extremely easy to  track you down using your footprint. Even if you delete it, it is still there. Whenever you post something, it stays there forever and ever. If you post something about yourself being crazy people will find it, even if you take it down through the power of sharing. Sometimes, if you try to get a job or go to college or high school, people will look you up. They will search your name, and they may find things that you don’t want them to find. That is called your unintended audience. Your intended audience is from people that you want to see. Keep this in mind whenever you post something.

You now know how much your digital footprint matters. Hopefully before you post anything, think about how you would feel if a police officer, job hirer, and your parents would feel if they saw your post.
