Chapter 4 - God Called Mary
Benchmark Advance Grade 3 Unit 1 focuses on the science topic of animal adaptations. Students explore the essential question of how living things survive in their environment. The unit teaches that over time, groups of animals develop inherited traits, or adaptations, that help them survive. Students learn about different types of adaptations and how they relate to an animal's specific environment, diet, and predators. These scientific concepts are how we will introduce instruction on comprehension strategies, such as determining the main idea and key details, as well as making connections to build our schema and decoding unfamiliar words using context clues.
Fundations - Unit 4
Fundations Level 3 Unit 4 will continue to build on the vowel-consonant-e pattern. Students will learn the v-e syllable type exception - ive. With this sound the vowel is short, like in the word captive. It breaks the v-e rule because we expect the vowel to be long, but it is not. The letter "e" needs to be added because the letter ""v can not end a word in the English language. In addition to practicing more multi-syllabic words, we will also add suffixes to v-e syllable type words. Examples would include safely and mistaken.
Unit Overview and Explanation for Parents
I found another teacher's slides that may be helpful for home practice. I do not use them in the classroom, but they are a great resource if your student is absent or having trouble with the concepts.
Topic 4/5 - Multiplication and Division Word Problems
We will be working on a hybrid of these chapters in the coming week(s). Students will practice analyzing word problems to determine the operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) that should be used to solve a problem. We will also work on finding additional patterns in the multiplication table.
After this review, we will move into concepts of finding the area of rectilinear shapes.
Our first unit of study will coincide with our Reading unit - Animal Adaptations. Students will build their knowledge of animal characteristics, adaptations, and habitats.
