We started learning the music for our spring musical, Cinderella: Youth Edition. We also played some theater games to introduce some basic concepts of acting as well as to get students more comfortable with taking risks.
In the video, the 7th graders demonstrate how to play "Dr. Know-It-All." Three kids stand at the front and act as Dr. Know-It-All. One person asks Dr. Know-It-All a question. The three kids can only say one word at a time when they answer. They have to work together to improvise an answer.
Our prayer song for the month was "10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)." Students learned that the songwriter was inspired by Psalm 103. We took some time to read the psalm and connect the blessings that were written in the psalm to the song's lyrics. We took a quiz at the end of the month on everything we had learned about the song.
In December, we put the finishing touches on our Christmas Concert music. The students did so well at the concert! The students are very responsible with their hand chimes and bells and seem to love using them. We watched our Christmas Concert videos during class.
Students learned about the historical background of their hand chimes or handbells piece. We took notes on the songs during class. Then, each student had to write about their piece as if they were introducing it at the concert.
Of course, we continued to learn our hand chimes/handbells pieces. Students who wanted to be in the choir also started learning "White Christmas."
Students finished their group research projects on musicians of their choice. Students researched the historical background of their musician. We talked about using credible sources in their research. They also analyzed and evaluated a song of their musician. Each group presented their Google Slides presentations to the class.
We also started learning our Christmas Concert pieces. The 6th and 7th graders are performing chords on the hand chimes as they sing their Christmas hymn. The 8th graders are performing two instrumental pieces on the hand bells.
During our first two weeks of class, we reviewed "the elements of music." These are music vocabulary words that students will be expected to use throughout the whole year on written assignments and during class discussions.
In September, we started group research projects on various musicians. Students chose a musician to research and picked their own groups. I will have pictures of students with their presentations in the October update.
