Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of Italy, animals, environment and peace. He ministered to the poor and underprivileged. He founded an order called the Franciscans, one of the largest orders in the Roman Catholic Church. Saint Francis was known for his love of nature, particularly his love of animals. In 1224, he had a vision and received stigmata. Stigmata are bodily marks or scars that replicate the same ones Jesus Christ suffered during the crucifixion. Francis died in Assisi on October 3, 1226. He was canonized on July 16, 1228. His feast day is October 4.
