Each school year, your child will be weighed, measured, and have his vision tested. A hearing exam is performed on all students in kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 7th grades. Those students in 6th grade will be examined for scoliosis of the spine. Visual dental checks will be performed each school year for those in Kindergarten, 3rd, and 7th grades. Parents will be notified if any of these tests or examinations warrant further follow-up with a physician.
Private physical examinations are required upon entry into school (as either a Kindergartner or new student) and again in 6th grade. See the forms below for more information.
Proof of completed immunizations are required before a child may attend school. Pennsylvania State Law states that a child may not be admitted to school without these immunizations. Please see the link below for the list of required immunizations.
Your child must remain home from school if they are suffering from a fever of 100 degrees or higher. The child should be fever free for 24 hours—without the assistance of fever reducing medication—before returning to school.
Follow these general guidelines for keeping a child home sick:
If your child has a low-grade fever (100 degrees), or has other symptoms (cough, headache, sore throat, nausea, etc).
If your child has a GI virus that includes vomiting or diarrhea, they should not return until they have gone 24 hours without vomiting or diarrhea.
Severe congestion, including chest, nasal, sinus, or nasal discharge.
If a child is coughing enough to need cough medicine during the school day, they should be kept home. Coughing is one of the most common ways to spread germs.
Contagious diseases such as an undiagnosed rash, chicken pox, pink eye/conjunctivitis, lice, or strep throat. The student may return 24 hours after the start of treatment. Upon returning to school after the treatment of lice, the student must see the school nurse for a visual check of the head, prior to returning to class.
Please note: School nurses are prohibited by law to diagnose injuries or illnesses.
According to the State Board of Nursing, no medication can be administered in school, except by written request of a physician. According to the DASD medication guidelines, a physician authorization is required for administration of prescription and over-the-counter medications not on the approved list. All medication must be in the original container and marked with the child’s name and dosage instructions. Please see the link below for the required medication form that must be signed and returned to the nurse's office.
