For this project I used many different sources across a plethora of assortments. As well as a very influential and beneficial book that I believe all West Virginian's should read.
Primary Sources
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/forgotten-matewan-massacre-was-epicenter-20th-century-mine-wars-180963026/- This source gives me lintel of the situation of the Mining Wars. It also showed me the steps and leading factors that went into the fighting.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/apr/14/redneck-pride-west-virginia-protests-strikes - This source shows some of the generalizations resulting from the wars. Generalizations we use even today in our modern society.
Secondary Sources
https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/introduction-to-the-west-virginia-mine-wars.htm- This source does a good job giving the reader a good understanding of what camps were like. It also shows the mindset of the Miners along with their families.
https://oxfordre.com/americanhistory/view/10.1093/acrefore/9780199329175.001.0001/acrefore-9780199329175-e-552?gclid=Cj0KCQjwkIGKBhCxARIsAINMioIADzuu3yXarEXNRTPhYQI5PEIHWC53DsvQZCmduKpCRmS-wiW5F8IaAqMYEALw_wcB - This source shows how many mines across the state where similar when talking about their bondage. It also proved satisfactory that the source talks about some of the individuality of each mine. Thus showing the differences in regions.
https://ohiovalleyresource.org/2019/08/09/bloody-harlan-revisited-blackjewel-miners-draw-on-labor-history-while-facing-uncertain-future/ - This website shows the history of the Harlan Country labor wars, which is very important in understanding the Coal mining war across the country. This being what these men fought for, and how we today need worker Unions.
https://wchstv.com/news/local/standing-united-living-divided-black-coal-miners-and-their-fight-for-justice - This website shows the fight for justice as Africans worked alongside whites, while undergoing racism. I find it pivotal for us as Americans to see how long our fellow people have fought just for an identity.
Book
This book is what gave me an understanding of my heritage, and what it means to be a West Virginian. That being said, it gave me insight into the past, more notably the mining wars. I feel this book would be very beneficial for Americans today, to read and build knowledge of what people underwent to have worker rights.
