What is “riot grrrl”/the movement?
The Riot Grrrl movement of the early 90s to present was a feminist movement specific to the punk music scene. It was created to bring awareness to the sexual violence and sexism that was being committed amongst the punk community. It was a movement made to empower women and to give women a place in punk. It soon became its own music genre and style all on its own.
Where did the movement start?
The movement started in Olympia, Washington, but quickly grew to be worldwide. It was started when a group of women held a meeting in regards to the sexism in the punk scene.
How did it impact people?
The movement gained a lot of attention very quickly. The movement helped bring awareness to the problems in the community and inspired people to speak up against it. It brought a new way of thinking about politics to young people. It helped empower women and inspire them to protest. The "Riot Grrrl" became a new type of woman that stood up for what they believe in.
Who were the founders of the movement?
The women that started this movement were, Kathleen Hanna, Molly Neuman, Alison Wolfe, and so many others. Kathleen Hanna is the lead singer of the band, Bikini Kill, a band that was the poster child for the movement. Molly Neuman and Alison Wolfe are in the band Bratmoblie, another influential band. These women were at the front of the movement and they even wrote many Riot Grrrl anthems.
What is movement like today?
For the last couple of years the Riot Grrrl movement has been unheard of, but that doesn't mean the effects are gone. Riot Grrrl is still in all of us today, the things that the movement taught us has been passed down to our generation. The movement has gotten a new life within this generation. The Riot Grrrl can never die, only if you stop fighting.
