James Naismith invented basketball because it was too cold to play football and baseball, and too dangerous to play those sports in the gym so the school asked Naismith to invent a new indoor sport. James Naismith got 2 baskets and nailed them on both sides of the gym about 10 feet up off the gym floor. They had 13 rules, and they had 9 players for each team. This is how basketball was born.

James Naismith invented the basketball ball three years after he made the game of basketball. Early basketball players used a soccer ball, which they threw into half-bushel peach baskets hung on opposite ends of the gym. The first basketball hoops were peach baskets nailed to an elevated track about 10 feet up in the air. The first basketball court was limited to the size of the college gym in which it lay. In 1891, James Naismith listed no specific size for a basketball court in his original 13 rules. Instead, players adapted their game according to the gym. YMCA gyms across the USA hosted many of the earliest basketball games.
