Our Learning - Why, How & What?

Our focus this term has been on retelling Pasifika stories our way so that others later in their lives can learn the ways we navigated parts of our life. We wanted to be storytellers where we could would use some of the journeys our ancestors travelled to reach the shores of Aotearoa to create these stories, our own stories. Here at St James we are blessed to have the diversity of Pasifika and Māori culture flowing throughout which makes this learning more personal for our tamariki.

To really connect to the learning, we wanted to offer opportunities for our tamariki to explore the resources available at their fingertips through digital tools to storytell. These included Keynote, Garageband, Clips, Chatterpix and Sketches Schools. Keynote was our main digital tool that we used where we were having to create transitions between objects & movement pathways so that when an audience was watching, it didn't require the creator to constantly click on the screen. There was a lot of discussion, trials/errors and plenty of unplugging / plugging when navigating these difficulties. Some were easy to fix, others required a few team members to work together to problem solve.

A small team of 9 from our class, using their skills and knowledge were able to put together our story using iMovie. Our team, enjoyed being in charge of selecting which slides went into their final movie and which slides could be used with some adjustments made by others who saw value in that creator's work. Each person contributed a piece of their story to the iMovie that helped to grow our journey, our story.

The Journey

Along our journey, we had to do a lot of planning, drafting and navigating of some of the low and high tides. Many calm seas to conquer as well as the stormy winds that tried to knock us off our tracks. With such an amazing team and class environment, our Navigators were able to document the entire journey using iMovie.
