Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been lovely to see all the children return so positively after half term.
Our Year 6 children came straight back to their residential trip this week to the Isle of Wight. Their week was filled with fun activities and provided them with the valuable opportunity to learn the vital independence skills they will need ahead of moving to secondary school. The staff received high praise throughout the week for the children's behaviour from members of the public. This was so lovely to hear and we are so very proud of them all for their fantastic attitudes over the week! This trip could not have happened without the dedication and support of the staff volunteers who accompanied the children. A huge thank you to Mrs Powick, Mrs Wales, Mrs Sykes, Mrs Lawrence, Miss Punter and Miss Radchenko who supported the children across the week and provided them with these fabulous memories.
In other news, we have been awarded two awards this week!
Firstly, I am thrilled to announce that St James have been awared the Eco Green Flag Award. Mrs Procter and her Eco Committee have worked tirelessly this year to develop initiatives to make St James a greener school and the submission feedback was very impressive. We will now be provided with an actual green flag to display on the flag poles outside school so will be planning a flag raising ceremony when it arrives.
We have also been award the Bronze School Games Award for our efforts to improve KS2 competitive sports at St James as well as our developments in P.E curriculum over the last three years. We are happy with our award, and are already planning our next steps to achieve the Silver next year.
Spelling Bee
Thank you to all the parents who engaged with the spelling bee. The children were very excited to hear the results of this challenge and see the new trophy! Each correct spelling was awarded 1 point and this was totalled as a class.Congratulations to Merlins who won with 1315 points! The runners up were: 2nd Kingfishers 3rd Eagles, 4th Hawks and 5th Woodpeckers.
Today we gave out trophies to those children who achieved the highest score in their classes. Congratulations to all the children!

Weekly reminder - for parents/carers, that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then you will be liable for a penalty notice fine
1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.
2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.
3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.
Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.

Attendance
The Government released two longitudinal studies on the impact of low attendance on future attainment and on future earning this week. Please see the two posters which demonstrate their findings.
Thank you to all the parents who support us in aiming for positive school attendance. Our current school attendance figure is 95.4% which is above National and Surrey level.
