Dear Parents and Carers,
We have reached the end of another fun filled term. So many exciting things has taken place and lots of impressive learning and progress can be seen across the school.
Over the past two weeks, four year groups have visited St James' Church to continue their learning about Easter. In sessions led by Father Damian, the children were able to explore the church and all thoroughly enjoyed their visit. Thank you to Father Damian for supporting us with these visits.
There is exciting learning to come next term, including the return of Year group assemblies for parents and carers. These will be celebrations of learning in each year group.

Fond farewells
Today we said goodbye to Miss Mahon, who has taught Year 3 Barn Owls since September. I would like to thank Miss Mahon for all her hard work at St James, especially how much she has developed our reading for pleasure agenda over the last two terms. She will be missed but we wish her luck on her new adventure.
Welcomes
After Easter we will welcome two members of staff to the St James team.
Mrs Mattingly will be joining us to work in Year 5 Kites in the mornings and Mrs Wales will also be joining us as SENCO and Inclusion Lead. They are both looking forward to joining our team.
Thank you!
Thank you to all the support from parents over the last term. It was lovely to see lots of you at our parents consultations. We were very pleased with the turnout for these with many teachers being able to speak to 100% of their parents. Please do give us feedback on the meetings below, using the Google form below.
At the end of this Spring term, I would like to thank the staff team of St James for their continued hard work, support and dedication to the school. I wish them all a well earned rest over the Easter holidays. I would also like to add a personal thanks to Mrs Cowden, who has done a tremendous job covering the SENCO role over this last term alongside her normal deputy head and DSL duties. I know there are lots of parents and staff who have benefitted from her experience and support over the last term that will join me in this well earned thanks.
Date to note:
As part of our development of our school grounds, we have planned a 'Plants and Seeds' Mufti day on Friday 21st April. Children will be invited to wear their own clothes and we will be asking for a voluntary donation of plants or seeds for our allotment and wider school grounds. If parents are unable to contribute, as always, children are still welcome to come in to school in Mufti on this day. If you would like to make a donation of plants or seeds, please take note of the guidance of plants we cannot have in school A Checklist of Potentially Harmful Plants / RHS Campaign for School Gardening.
Kind Request
Please could I respectfully ask for dog owners to be mindful of children, who may be frightened or allegic to dogs when walking to school, especially near the school gates. If owners could keep dogs on short leads as they approach the school and try to avoid blocking the gates, that would be a great support to those children who may be a little worried around dogs. Thank you for your support in this.
Reminder that we return to school on Tuesday 18th April as Monday 17th April is an INSET day. There is an INSET day club running at St James to support working parents and carers. Please see the flyer at the end of the newsletter.
Wishing you all a lovely Easter break!
Mrs Murphy
Over the last week, we have seen an increase in children bringing in Prime drinks into school.
Please could I request parents to not allow children to do this.
To encourage children to stay hydrated throughout the day, we do ask that parents supply a water bottle for their child. These should contain plain water only. Squash or any other flavourings are not allowed in school.
As you will know we have changed our lunch system at St James this term and this has been a huge success. To end the term, our catering team from Twelve15 treated the children to a bunny biscuit for their pudding!
The children loved them.
Thank you Giovanna, Amanda and Iwona!
To mark the end of the term, I have asked some of the subject leaders, who are the champions of their subjects, to showcase some of the fabulous learning that has taken place at St James. The staff had all worked incredibly hard todevelop the curriculum and prepare these learning activities. We hope you enjoy looking at the work created.
We have had an exciting term in Science with lots of classes using our beautiful grounds to enhance lessons.
Reception have adventures with outdoor learning every Wednesday.
Year 1 have been learning about the changing seasons and looking for signs of Spring.
Year 2 have been learning about micro habitats and went on a bug hunt in the Nest.
Year 3 have been learning about rocks and soils, understanding how fossils are formed.
Year 4 have been learning all about how sound travels, making their own telephones.
Year 5 the children have been learning about forces and recognising that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.
Year 6 have learnt about the famous scientist Charles Darwin and his Theory of Evolution.
In French, here are some examples of the work that the children have studied since September:
Year 3 started learning basic greetings
Year 4 looked at French cities
Year 5 learnt about different school subjects
Year 6 wrote about activities in French using their verb knowledge
Writing at St James
This academic year we have welcomed a new curriculum in Literacy. This has provided the children with lots of opportunities for writing. Children have commented on how much they’ve enjoyed the different books and often the unusual ways in which the book is introduced e.g. Aliens landing on the field, an archaeological dig.
We have also had a big push on handwriting to ensure children are using the cursive script as they move up the school and gain in confidence.
So far, the whole school have completed two whole school unaided writing tasks on the same theme. One was story writing and the other an explanation. It has been fantastic to be able to look at the children’s work from EYFS all the way up to Year 6, all writing about the same topic. The progression is quite astounding to see.
Design and Technology
Year 6 had lots of fun making their electronic games today in DT. The children combined their science and design knowledge to create these fabulous designs.
KS1 and KS2 were visited by the Canal and River Trust to deliver a talk about water safety, something that we feel is very important at St James considering our proximity to rivers and canals in this area. The children were given the key message of SAFE: Stay Away From the Edge. Please do visit their website for more information, resources and games for children to reiterate their message. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/
Thank you to those parents who have supported us with improving our school attendance this term.
Our School target for attendance is 96%. Our current attendance at St James is 94.04% as of the 30th March.
Year group totals are as follows:
Year R: 92.55%
Year 1: 93.02%
Year 2: 94.73%
Year 3: 93.82%
Year 4: 96.10%
Year 5: 94.36%
Year 6: 93.68%
Whilst we know that children get ill, and some absence is unavoidable, please do consider your child's learning when requesting leave from school for term-time holidays.
On the 15th March we sent out a letter about the Parent Govenor Elections. You should have received an updated letter today regarding the next stage of the process.
As we have more candidates than vacancies, we must now hold a ballot. The ballot will be held using an online form which can be access using this link - Online Ballot Form
If you would prefer to use a paper ballot form, please request this from the school office.
Please ensure you submit your online or paper ballot form by Friday 21st April at 3pm.

This term we had new sports kit arrive for our St James sports teams. We now have some stylish tracksuits, netball kits and rugby kits to accompany our recently updated athletics and football kits. The children have been very excited to wear these at recent events.
St James Year 6 Netball team took part in the District tournament. Competing against 9 other schools, St James did amazingly well and came 3rd overall.
Thank you to Mrs Powick for coaching the team through this event and before.
On Saturday 18th March, 30 St James children got up early on a wet morning to attend a very muddy Cross Country event at Notre Dame school. All the children ran really well and showed great resilience throughout the event.
We had some amazing successes at the event which included : 2nd overall for the Year 6 boys team; 3rd overall for the Year 3 and 4 boys team; 4th for Charlie in the Year 3/4 race; 4th for Chloe in the Year 6 race and 1st for Leo in the Year 6 boys race.
Congratulations for all the children who took part and thanks to Mr Sawyer for his in- school coaching and Mrs Cowden and Mrs Powick who gave up their Saturday morning to support the children.

We thought it may be worth reminding all parents of the different channels we have to communicate with teachers at St James.
1) A note in reading diary or a hand written note to the teacher.
2) For urgent messages, please email them to the office and they will pass them on to the teaching team.
3) To a request for a discussion with the class teacher about a concern, please email the office and they will arrange a time for the teacher to call you.
4) Discussion with the class teacher at the end of the school day. Please remember that teachers will first need to ensure all children have been safely dismissed before discussing with parents.
Please direct questions about your child's learning or behaviour to the class teacher in the first instance.
If following this discussion your questions are not answered or you still have a worry, please contact the office and they will then put you in touch with the the Phase Leader.
Whilst we hope that any queries or concerns will be reduced by this point, if for any reason they cannot be, then please email the office for the attention of Mrs Cowden or Mrs Murphy.
The school lunch menu is changing after the Easter holidays. Please find below the three week rolling menu for the Summer Term.
Please note, Twelve15 have applied a price increase for Key Stage 2 paid meals effective from the 18th April 2023. The cost of a KS2 meal is now £2.70 per day.
If your child/ren are in Key Stage 2, please remember to book their meals for next term using the SCOPAY app.
