Dear Parents and Carers,
There has been lots of learning going on across the school over the last two weeks. Thank you to Dr Patel, who came into support Year 2 in their learning about healthy lifestyle and how to keep our bodies healthy. The children asked lots of questions and learnt lots of new information.
STEM Week
Next week we also have a busy week here at St James. We have STEM week across the school, where children will be applying their Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills in a variety of activities. We will end the week with a special maths themed lunch. Details can be seen below.
Internet Safety Day
It is also Internet Safety Day on Tuesday, where children will be working with their teachers to learn about keeping safe online. Our IT providers, Eduthing, are running an online parent workshop at 7pm on the 6th February. Please see the flyer for further details.
In light of all the exciting things that are going on next week, we will be producing a extra newsletter to mark the end of the end of the half term and showcase all the learning. Please look out for this in your inbox on Friday.
Huge congratulations are in order to our Twelve-15 catering team as they achieved a 5 star Food Hygiene Rating. Well done Giovanna and her team.
We would also like to congratulate Mrs Hilton who graduated with a First last week. We are all very proud of her and her amazing achievement.
Other notices
Volunteers: We would like to request any parent, who has a particular musical talent, to get in touch with us if they are able to support our Music day on 21st June. If you are available to help, please do contact the office on office@stjames-weybridge.surrey.sch.uk
Water bottles: We understand that it is sometimes unavoidable, but please could we remind parents to send children into school with a water bottle each day. There has been a notable increase in the number of children who have forgotten their bottle, come to the office in request of a paper/ plastic cup so they can have a drink.
Smart Watches: We have noticed that a number of children are coming into school wearing Smart Watches. Please could all parents take note that children are not allowed to wear watches that can take photographs, videos, can connect to the internet or that have games included as a function. This does include Apple watches.
Communication changes
And finally, thank you to the 8 parents and carers who completed the communication survey in the last newsletter. We were happy to see that 100% of those who completed the survey felt the newsletter was useful and informative and that it can be easily accessed easily on devices. We were pleased to see that 87.5% enjoy the curriculum updates on the newsletter.
We will take note that we do still need to further develop our wider communication as only 62.5% of respondents said that communication was timely and effective. This is something that we will prioritise and we will take all written comments into consideration.
Arbor
As a first step, we will be moving away from Parentmail after the February half term and instead will communicate with parents using Arbor. Arbor does not require an app or login as parents will receive emails directly to their email inbox.
To ensure a smooth transition, the school office will be sending a test email to all parents on Monday 5th February using Arbor. A simultaneous email will also be sent through Parentmail so parents know when the test email has been sent. Please inform the school office if you do not receive this test email. Before contacting the office please ensure that you check your junk/spam folder.
Best wishes,
Mrs Murphy
Y4 Football Festival at Cleves School
St James were recently provided the opportunity to enter a Y4 Mixed Football Festival at Cleves school. The tournament was a non-competitive festival based around sporting values of team work and respect. Although a non-competitive tournament, the games were all played with a highly competitive spirit with all the teams getting really involved in the fun of the afternoon. There were 6 schools in attendance, including St James, with each team playing each other once. There were lots of smiles an enjoyment had by all playing. The children that represented the school at this event were: Tyler N, George D, Yegor J, Yasmin P, Zac L, Mabel R, Daisy D, Sam S, Alex L.
Match Report for Year 5&6 Boys League Football v Walton Oak
On Tuesday 23rd of January, our Year 5 and 6 boys football team played their next league fixture against Walton Oak Primary School. The game was well played by both sides and the year 5 boys in the team really worked hard for the team. The final result was 5-1 loss to our team but the result does not match the way the game was played. Walton Oak had a couple of lucky goals. Toby S scored our goal in the game.
The boys the represented the school were: Cole O, Copper H, Vlad K, Toby S, Stanley P, Makie C, Tyler O, Callie H.
Year 6 Dodgeball Tournament at Cleves School
Children in Year 6 went to a Dodgeball Competition at Cleves on 12th January. There were 6 other schools present and each school played one match against each of the other teams. The event was excellent! Children from all the schools, including St James, upheld excellent sporting values of respect, honesty and courage. The matches were all very fast paced and tightly contested. Our team won 3 of the six matches played, ending up in 3rd place overall. The tournament was won by St Cuthbert’s School.
A very big well done to all of the team for showing excellent team and school spirit and upholding the school values of Love, Respect, Unity and Courage. The team were: Tom G, Parker H, Cole O, Mason Y, Ben W, India T, Isla T, Daisy R, Ella W, Abi R.
Thank you to Mr Sawyer, Mrs Powick and Mrs Moore who work hard to organise and support the children at all these sporting events.
Reading Challenge
Our Rainbow is filling up and it was amazing to hand out so many 100 read certificates today.
We also handed out our first 150 read certificates today.
Pupil voice this week has shown that this incentive is really having an impact in promoting reading at home so well done to all children and parents/carers!
Book Fair: Save the Date
The book fair is returning to St James on Tuesday 20th February.
Further details will follow.
To celebrate STEM week, next week, we are having special school lunches on Thursday 8th February and Friday 9th February.
On Thursday it will be a Mystery Counter Service Meal, this means there will be a wide selection of meal options and the children will choose at the serving counter on the day.
On Friday, the meal will be a Maths themed lunch. Please see the menu below.
If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, they are entitled to receive a free school meal under the Universal Infant Free School Meals Scheme.
If your KS2 child already has school lunches, please go to SCOPAY and order a meal for that day, as usual.
If your child usually has packed lunches from home, but would like to have the special lunch on Thursday 8th February or Friday 9th February, you can order your child's lunch by signing into SCOPAY going to Balances, Dinner Money, Top up balance, Calendar and then select the correct day. If you are entitled to free school meals you do not need to select top up balance, just go straight to Calendar.
There has been lots of fantastic history learning this term at St James! Our youngest children in EYFS have learnt about important historical figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Mae Jemison. Year 1 have identified similarities and differences between ways of life in the 1950s and modern day. Year 2 enjoyed learning about the impacts of the Great Fire of London. In Year 3, children have been learning about changes in Britain in the Bronze and Iron Ages. Year 4 learnt about the achievements of the Ancient Egyptians. In Year 5, children have been learning about The Vikings and their settlement in Britain. Year 6 have been learning about the achievements of the Ancient Maya. Children from across the school have loved exploring our new timeline on the junior playground, using it to learn historical facts and make links between the different periods they have studied.
