Dear Parents and Carers,
Can you believe that we are already two weeks in to our summer term and as always here at St James, it has been a fun filled fortnight!
Science Author Visit
Last week, Year 2 and Year 3 were treated to a visit by Tina Talbot who shared her books with them. These are all stories that are written to explain scientific concepts. The children really enjoyed the visit and had lots of questions. We have a set of books for the library so the children can enjoy these.
Disco Fun!
Last Friday, St James Friends hosted three discos for all the children to enjoy! It was fantastic to see all the children having a fabulous time and we are very grateful to all to the staff and helpers who gave up their time to ensure that we could run this event. Special thanks to Gemma and Claire for their roles in organising the fun event.
Sunset and Sunrise Club revamp!
Sunset and Sunrise club has been refurnished since half term with the arrival of new furniture and, more importantly, a wealth of new activities. Some highlights include a new shop role play area, car tracks and Hot Wheels vehicles, Uno Extreme, Mapominoes, a puppet theatre and some pop up goals for football. The students who attend breakfast and afterschool club have given further suggestions on what activities they want to see, during a recent pupil voice, and we will be working to incorporate these as soon as we can.
Sports Successes:
Last Thursday, St James hosted a rounders competition for local schools. Organised by Mrs Powick and Mr Sawyer, this was a fabulous event where two teams of St James competed against Bell Farm and Manorcroft School. All the children did fantastically well and St James came 1st and 2nd. Well done to everyone involved.
District Sports:
In a further sporting event, our District Sports team headed to the Excel in Walton on Tuesday 11th June. A selection of children in Years 3, 4 and 5 represented St James at the Elmbridge and Runnymede 2024 District Sports event. All the children showcased their value of Unity as they were cheering on not only their peers but children from every school who competed in an event.
The children were very excited and behaved impeccably demonstrating all of the St James’ Values, not only when taking part in events, but also when moving around the venue and spectating. Some of the events that the children took part in were, long jump, ball throw, relay racing, sprinting and long distance running. In our long jump, relay and sprinting events we had several children qualify for the finals and ended the day with 2 event wins. Congratulations to Zach (Year 3) and George (Year 4) who both won their long jump event.
A huge well done to all that took part and thank you to those that came to support the children on the day. A special thank you to Mrs Michaelides, Miss Boyle, Mrs Kennedy, Mrs Von Eynern and Mr Sawyer who supported the children at the event.
Isle of Wight Y6 Residential:
This week, our Year 6 children completed their school journey to the Isle of Wight for a fun-filled celebration of learning. Drawing on their learning across their time at St James, they had a valuable opportunity to contextualise this in the real world, whilst learning the independence skills they need for their transition to secondary school. The children completed a beach walk whilst hunting for fossils; went on a boat trip at the Needles to learn about erosion; considered their science knowledge of forces while enjoying the rides at Black Gang Chine and lots more. Throughout the trip, all the children demonstrated their St James values and I am particularly proud to hear that members of the public, and other school group leaders, commented on how polite and well-behaved the children were. This shows what excellent ambassadors for St James these children are, even when away from home.
As you know these trips cannot take place without the dedication of the school team. I am very thankful to Mrs Wales, Mrs Cowden, Mrs Powick, Mrs Lawrence, Mrs Wong and Miss Radchenko who supported the children for the whole week. I hope that they will have a well deserved rest this weekend.
Oatlands Fair donation
We were very grateful for a kind donation of £150 from the organisers of Oatlands Fair today and we are very thankful for those parents who attended and supported all the great causes that this event supports. We will be considering how we can use this money for the benefit of as many children as possible.
Kind reminders
As you will have seen from our communications, we have seen a rise in the number of chickenpox at St James over the last week. Please could I also remind parents of the 48-rule that should be followed if your child has been vomited or had diarrhoea. We have had to send a number of children home this week as this rule has not been followed. Thank you for your support in preventing the spread of this to all children and staff at St James. If you are ever unsure on whether you can or can't send your child to school, please refer to this NHS guidance.
As a further reminder, please could I ask all parents to ensure that children are only bringing water in their water bottles at school. We do not allow squash or sports drinks in the classroom.

INSET Day change in 2024-2025
We have made a change to our planned INSET days next year in 2025. In light of receiving such a positive response to us positioning our INSET day on the Friday before the May half term, from staff and parents, the INSET day will now be on the 23rd May 2025 not the 2nd June 2025.
Looking ahead to next week
And finally, as we look forward to next week where we host our 8 Millions Ideas Entrepreneur day, supported by Mr and Mrs Harkin and also our Music Day on Friday.
Wishing you a lovely weekend,
Mrs Murphy
We are keen to promote our locational knowledge within the children of St James and this is something the children will be looking at regularly in their Geography lessons. Guided by the National Curriculum, by the end of KS1 children should be able to:
name and locate the world’s seven continents and name five oceans
locate and identify characteristics of the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and its surrounding seas
By the end of KS2, children should be able to:
locate the world’s countries, using maps to focus on Europe (including the location of Russia) and North and South America, concentrating on their environmental regions
name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom,
Whilst we appreciate that this is a challenging national curriculum requirements, even for the adults, we know that our children are ready for the challenge.
To help them with this information, Mrs Lawrence ,our Geography Lead, has provided some songs that will be revisited regularly in school.
If you would like to assist in this challenge, or even challenge yourself, we have attached the following clips to inspire you. Warning: these songs will get stuck in your head!
The children have been revisiting our Global charity in their R.E lessons. They have considered what Faith is in Action, and considered how St James supporting the Coco's Foundation is a good example of this.
Recommended reads
Parents are often asking us which books we would recommend for their children to read. The website Books for Topics has just updated their recommended reads for each year group. These can be found here.
We will aim to get as many of these in our library as we can, but parents may find these useful to guide their next purchase or look out for these in the library.
To celebrate Music Day on Friday 21st June, we are having a special Music themed lunch. The lunch will include:
Funky Chicken Goujons with Reggae Rice
Or
Soulful Sausage Roll (vegan)
Vegetable medley
Microphone Muffin
If your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2, they are entitled to receive a free school meal under the Universal Infant Free School Meals Scheme.
If your child already has school lunches, you don’t need to do anything as you child will automatically receive a meal for that day.
If your child usually has packed lunches from home, but would like to have the special lunch on Friday 21st June, you can order your child's lunch by signing into SCOPAY going to Balances, Dinner Money, Top up balance, Calendar and then select the correct day. If you are entitled to free school meals you do not need to select top up balance, just go straight to Calendar.
Due to this special lunch, Fish and Chips/Veggie fingers will replace the usual menu on Tuesday 18th June.
Please find below the new Summer menu from our school caterers, Twelve15. This is a three week rolling menu. All children choose from one of the three meal options at the start of each school day.
