A Message from Mrs Murphy

Dear Parents and Carers,

Well, the Christmas season has arrived here at St James. Christmas play preparation is in full flow and the Christmas trees are up around the school. We are all getting very excited for the festive period. There is still time to order your tickets for the Christmas performances if you have not done so already. Please contact the office for more information.

Christmas Fair

Last Saturday, the Friends of St James hosted the Christmas Fair and what a fabulous event it was. With a huge range of activities and stalls, spinning cup rides and of course the Santa's Grotto in Hagrid's hut.

I would like to say a huge thank you to:

Parenting Puzzle Course

We have teamed up with Families Thriving together and our Family Suport Worker, Mrs Doe,  to offer the Parenting Puzzle Course at St James in January. This is a fantastic opportunity for all parents to learn skills and strategies which will help create a  calmer family life. The sessions will run on Tuesday mornings from January.

Please click the link here to register interest. Funding support can be provided by St James if parents are interested but are experiencing financial difficulties.

Behaviour Policy

We have finalised our new Behaviour Policy, which is available to read here. This policy has taken the views of parents, staff, pupils and Governors as well as reflecting the new Government Guidance. This policy sees the removal of the bottom rungs of the behaviour ladder from view ( blue, yellow and orange) and replaces this with "Negative behaviour choices" or "Serious Behaviour Choices". A list of these have been generated with the children and will be reviewed annually.  The children may still refer to the 'Serious behaviour choices' as Amber behaviours.

Consequences will still be put in place for negative behaviour choices but this will not be publicly displayed, and will be kept private between the teacher, pupil and parent. This is really important to protect the mental health and wellbeing of the pupils and also teach the children that everyone makes mistakes and we can move on from this.

In addition to this, there is a strong emphasis in our new policy on restorative practice and  zones of regulation to encourage children to explain how they feel. All staff have the Zones of regulation prompts on their lanyards and each classroom door has a strip so children can indicate this subtly if they wish upon entry to the classroom.  Please find some useful resources attached,  which can be used to support converasations at home.

To assist with understanding of our new behaviour policy, please  see our new Behaviour Policy in a Nutshell document.

If you would like to make any comments about this policy, which will be used to guide the review of this policy next year, please use this link here

Coco's Foundation - Introduction to St James' Global Charity

This week we welcome Sharon and Chris St James to launch our fundraising partnership with Coco's Foundation. The senior leadership team have search for a global charity which we can support, which demonstrate our values and our commitment to providing a high quality education for all.

The Coco Foundation supports orphan children in South Africa by providing a range of support from school uniform, water systems to houses.

In assembly on Monday, Chris explained to the children  what the charity does and how much they have raised. To help our children understand the impact of their fundraising over this year , we will making links with the schools the Coco Foundation supports and St James children will have the opportunity to ask questions about how life is different in different parts of the world.

Well done to Anna T, who demonstrated how to carry a bucket of water on her head without spilling a drop! We all agreed that we would not want to do it every morning or for such a long distance.

Please see the supporting document for further information and look out for our fundraising opportunities over the next year.

Welcomes

We would like to offer a warm St James welcome to Mrs Sweeting who has joined the St James team to work in Reception. Mrs Sweeting works in the morning supporting the children across both classes.

Mindfulness Garden Update

Building has started! The children have been fascinated by the development. The diggers and machinery was the highlight, and I believe some were even given names by some of the children!

We are hoping that this will be finished by the middle of next week and will plan a 'grand opening' ahead of opening it to the children.

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Mrs Murphy

Weybridge Library Winter Mini Challenge

What is the Winter Mini Challenge?

The Winter Mini Challenge is an online, bitesize version of The Reading Agency’s annual Summer Reading Challenge. This summer, The Reading Agency teamed up with the Youth Sport Trust and public libraries to bring you Ready, Set, Read! – a Summer Reading Challenge that empowers hundreds of thousands of young people to read and play, keeping minds and bodies active over the summer break. Following the success of Ready, Set, Read!, The Reading Agency are delighted to extend the theme into the Winter Mini Challenge. With the holidays approaching, now is the time to encourage children to discover the joy of reading and to build on good reading habits!

It is easy to take part in the Winter Mini Challenge. Children simply read three books or more of their choice between 1 December 2023 and 19 February 2024 and add them to their online profile on wintermini.org.uk. Reaching their reading goal will unlock a limited-edition virtual badge and a special Winter Mini Challenge certificate to print off and keep.

Prize for every child reaching their goal

Surrey Libraries are encouraging every child and their responsible adult to visit their local Surrey library to pick up their books and start reading! Besides picking up books from their Surrey library, children can borrow books from their school library, and download for free Surrey Libraries’ eBooks, eAudiobooks and eComics. All reading counts! Once a child has reached their online goal, they can collect a prize in one of our libraries*. They can bring along their printed certificate or show the e-certificate to a staff member or volunteer on a device like a mobile phone, and they can collect a prize (suitable for 3+ year olds, available in most of our libraries, and as long as stock lasts). Please note that a child must be a library member to collect their prize. If someone isn’t a member yet, they can join the library online or at their local library. Library membership is free.
