Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been lovely to see so many parents and carers this week at our consultations. We were thrilled that we are had an amazing 90% attendance uptake of these valuable parent-teacher meetings and we hope that you all found them useful. We are always keen to hear feedback on how these can be made even better, so please complete the form here, or below, if you have any comments.
Lots of great things have happened at St James over the last two weeks. These include:
Our Harvest festival. Thank you for all the kind donations for the foodbank which have been gratefully received. It was lovely that our children's artwork could decorate the church for the Harvest service last weekend.
Reception went on their first trip today to the Library and the Church. Well done Chicks and Ducklings for all being so responsible on your visit. Thank you to all the parents and carers who helped this morning.
On Monday, the children had a Sanatani assembly as we continue to teach children about other faiths and religious celebrations and celebrate everyone's differences.
E- Safety
We are continuing our focus on E-Safety as we aim to keep all parents and carers up to date with developments so they can keep their children safe online.
A recent report by Ofcom highlighted that over half of 3 to 17year-olds are using TikTok, despite TikTok having an age rating of 13+. Because TikTok uses algorithms to show users new content, it is easy for young people to come across inappropriate or upsetting videos. The platform also has communication features that allow users to privately message each other, which could put your child at risk of being contacted by someone they don’t know. Further advice on TikTok can be seen in this parent guide or via the following link: https://www.tiktok.com/safety/en/guardians-guide/
Green Redeem
Green Redeem is an exciting fundraising opportunity for schools.
Parents are encouraged to sign up and participate in the eco-projects to help the environment and raise money for St James at the same time.
With any funds raised, our aim at St James is to develop our green spaces and allotment area to enhance the children’s knowledge about the environment, growing foods and recycling. We are hoping to have large raised beds so each year group will have access to growing plants, purchase compost bins and litter pickers, and replace our old waste bins.
Thank you for your support.
Air Pollution
Six borough and district councils in Surrey are offering a free service called airTEXT to warn residents about upcoming air pollution. You can sign up for alerts by text, email, or voicemail which launches at the start of October 2024. Elmbridge is one of these areas, so please use the link to sign up if you are interested.
Coming up at St James:
Mufti Day
The Friends of St James will be running a fundraising Mufti Day next Friday, on the 25th October. Children are invited to come into school in their own clothes for the day for a voluntary donation.
Reading Workshop
Tuesday 19th November 2024 at 2.45pm - Miss Boyle and Mrs Dodd will be holding a short workshop to help you understand the best ways you can help your child with their reading at home. This workshop will help you feel more confident with supporting your child’s learning. Please do come along.
Kind regards,
Mrs Murphy
We have recently received feedback that parents and carers would like to know what our SEND offer looks like in practise. SEND and Inclusion is at the heart of everything that we do here at St James. Whether it be policy creation, considering school visits, curriculum developments or timetabling wellbeing breaks, we always consider how this will support our diverse community of children. Led by Mrs Wales, SEND and Inclusion at St James is something we are all passionate about and to explain it better for parents, we have updated our ‘In a Nutshell’ series to include SEND and Inclusion. This can be found on the school website here
At St James, every teacher is a teacher of SEND and all class teachers are responsible for the delivery of the SEND provision in their class. We have a dedicated SENCO email address, sen@stjames-weybridge.surrey.sch.uk which is accessed by Mrs Wales every Monday-Thursday.
One of the main features of our policy for SEND is our commitment to our very own Inclusive Charter. Now in its second year of implementation at St James, this outlines the four key features of Quality First teaching that we expect to see in most lessons. This is unique to St James as we believe if we can get it right for SEND, this will benefit all learners.
Our four Inclusive Charter Practices are:
· Adaptive teaching and scaffolding
· Visuals
· Relationships
· Manipulatives and resources
Some children may require some additional interventions out of the classroom to target an area of need. We are lucky enough to have a team of Teaching Assistants, who are now specialists in carefully chosen research-based interventions. Overseen by Mrs Wales, these children will receive this support and the progress of this will be monitored and reviewed at the end of the time-bound intervention.
To see an overview of our SEND support interventions, please see here.
In addition to all of this, we prioritise our school financial resources to maintain teaching assistants in each classroom in the morning to ensure all children can receive targeted supported in core subjects. The allocation of the additional adult is the responsibility of class teacher, and all our additional adults have recently received high quality training to ensure they can be highly effective in their role as a “guide by the side” to encourage children to developed their independent learner strategies which will be needed for their next phase of education.
For further information, you may want to read our SEND policy which is available here, or our SEND information report, which answers 14 key questions about SEND at St James.
If you have any other questions about our offer for children with additional needs at St James, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Mrs Wales.

Weekly reminder - for parents/carers, that if they take their children out of school without authority for 5 or more days (which do not have to be consecutive), then you will be liable for a penalty notice fine
1. If you have not incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children in a rolling 3 year period since 19 August 2024, then the penalty notice will be charged at the rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. This will be reduced to £80.00 if paid within 21 days of receipt of the notice. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.
2. If you have incurred a penalty notice relating to this child/children since 19 August 2024, the rolling 3 year period will be activated from the date of the first penalty notice and the second penalty notice will be charged at the flat rate of £160.00, per parent/carer per child, if paid within 28 days. There will be no reduction for payment within 21 days. Failure to pay the Penalty Notice will result in Surrey County Council considering legal proceedings against you in the Magistrates Court.
3. If you have incurred 2 penalty notices relating to this child/children in the rolling 3 year period since the first penalty notice was issued, then you will NOT receive a third penalty notice – Surrey County Council will have no option but to consider a prosecution, per parent/carer per child, in the Magistrates Court under s 444 Education Act 1996.
Surrey County Council is not responsible for authorising pupil absence and therefore cannot withdraw any Penalty Notice requests without the written permission of the Headteacher.

Leave of Absence form can be found here.
Please find below the lunch menu from our school caterers, Twelve15. This is a three week rolling menu. All children choose from one of the three meal options at the start of each school day.
If your child is in KS2 and has a school meal, please remember to pay for and book their meals in advance using the SCOPAY app.
For this occasion, we are asking for all children to come in yellow or spotty clothing for the day to celebrate
Children In Need. If you would like to donate, please click on this link. Thank you.
