Parent Newsletter - Friday 10th October 2025
Good Morning,
I am writing to share some fantastic news regarding our school’s recent senior results. We are absolutely delighted with the performance of our pupils last session (24/25), which is a testament to their dedication, the hard work of our staff, and the invaluable support you provide at home.
We are particularly proud of the significant achievements across S4 and S5:
S4 Attainment: We have achieved one of our best-ever results, with 52% of pupils gaining at least five qualifications at SCQF Level 5 or better (equivalent to National 5). This figure is only beaten by the teacher-judged results during the COVID-19 period, demonstrating that we are successfully returning to and exceeding pre-pandemic attainment levels.
S5 Attainment : This year marks a new school record! 21% of our pupils successfully gained five awards or more at SCQF Level 6 or better (equivalent to Higher). This surpasses our previous best of 20%, achieved during the COVID-19 teacher judgement period, showing sustained and improving academic success.
These excellent results reflect the positive impact of our focused strategies on learning and teaching, tracking and intervention, and our varied senior curriculum. We are also very lucky to have the support of our parents/carers, thank you for this, it make all the difference,
Building on the success and deep learning seen in the Senior Phase (S4-S6), we are excited to propose changes to strengthen the Broad General Education (BGE) for S1-S3 pupils. Our goal is to sprinkle the magic of the Senior Phase approach into these earlier stages to provide greater depth and continuity of study.
Mr McGurk first introduced our ideas during the S2/3 Information Session at the start of term. We propose removing the traditional S3 options process and instead asking pupils in S2 to select the subjects they intend to study continuously until the end of S4.
The key benefits of this approach include:
Continuity of Study: Pupils will benefit from uninterrupted learning in their chosen subject areas and, where possible, maintain consistency with their subject teacher from S3 into S4.
Depth of Learning: This eliminates the two-term dash in S4, allowing for real depth of learning and better preparation for National qualifications. We aim to continue to raise attainment for five qualifications at level 5 (National 5).
Enhanced Time and Focus: Pupils will focus on seven rather than eight subjects, allowing extra time in S3 to learn the knowledge and skills of their courses with additional revision time for the national qualifications in S4.
Wider Curriculum and Skills: We will dedicate time to focusing on key skills like Reading and Listening, and widen the S3 curriculum to include more vocational subjects, outdoor learning, and activities.
PBL (Project-Based Learning) opportunities will continue to provide a breadth of experiences for all learners.
We will be discussing this important development in more detail at our next Parent and Teacher Partnership (PTP) meeting on Monday, November 17th.
We are confident that these changes will further enhance the educational experience and attainment outcomes for all our pupils.
With best wishes,
Claire Friel

Thank you to everyone who participated in this event. It was well attended and feedback was wonderful. Thank you!
Our wonderful musicians had a fun filled weekend at Lockerbie at the end of September. They had a very dramatic start with the arrival of Storm Amy as well as a powercut! They soldiered on, and had a fantastic time. Many thanks to the staff who organised the trip, they reported that the pupils were amazing and a credit to their families and the school. Thank you!
Our Senior MVP pupils have been very busy- the mentors all did a great job with their input in the S1 and S2 classes have now received Core Session 1 learning all about gender stereotypes.
Roll on Core Session 2 in a couple weeks' time...
