Kincardine-in-Menteith Primary is a co-educational, non-denominational school for children from Primary 1 to Primary 7. The school occupies a picturesque site enjoying views across fields and woodland, next to Kincardine-in-Menteith church in Blair Drummond. The school is registered as a listed building of historic and architectural interest. It celebrated its 160th Anniversary in October 2015. The school has two spacious classrooms, a gym/diningroom, a kitchen where school dinners are cooked in-house, a staffroom and front office area. The school uses Blairdrummond Community Hall which is a short walk from the playground to deliver PE sessions. Parents, staff and children have developed the grounds of the school which include the woodland and school garden.
Our school currently has two classes from P1–P7. At present we have a P1-4 class with 19 pupils and a P5-7 class with 18 pupils. In our small school the distribution of children over the various stages necessitates the formation of composite classes. This is where children from two or three stages of the school compose one class. Primary teachers are trained to teach in differentiated groups. Consequently, composite classes, organised in flexible teaching and learning groups, operate in the same way as a single stage class allowing children to study at their own level. From August 2007 Primary 1 classes has had a maximum of 25 children, 30 in P2 and 33 in P4–P7. A composite class will not exceed 25 in number.
Children, parents, staff and the community of Kincardine in Menteith identify strongly and are proud to be associated with our school. We work hard to create a welcoming atmosphere where parents and members of the community are encouraged to be involved in the life of the school.
Children, staff, parents and our community are encouraged to ‘live our values’. It is important to ensure that the ethos and climate contribute positively to our school.
At the start of the school year our learners supported by the class teacher, create a class charter and agree their rights and responsibilities. In this way they can discuss issues relevant to them and agree and have ownership of acceptable guidelines for behaviour.
Our school community promotes a positive relationships policy encouraging and providing opportunities to behave well. We use a restorative approach to dealing with any difficulties. Restorative approaches help us ensure a fair process, while helping all involved to understand the impact of their behaviour on others. It encourages members of the school community to effectively resolve and learn from conflict in a way which maintains relationships.
All children become a member of a team when they join the school. We have 3 teams; Smiddy, Safari and Briarlands. Senior pupils are given the role of House Captain and Vice Captain. Our teams allow our learners to develop co-operation and team work skills throughout the year through a variety of house challenges and sports day.
In consultation with parents, carers, community members, staff and pupils, we updated our school values in September 2017. Our values are, Excellence, Honesty, Responsibility, Kindness and Courage. These values underpin life in our learning community.
