Beginning Band [Grade 6]
Beginning level instruction in flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and percussion for sixth students with no previous experience.
Students will learn self-discipline at the highest level by participating in band. Their social skills, communication skills, self-concept, cooperative talents, and creative mind will all be nurtured through their study in band. These life-skills will serve as an important foundation as they take on various responsibilities in their future.
Throughout the year, students will perform at three concerts as they grow and develop as young musicians.
Options regarding how to purchase and/or rent an affordable quality instrument will be presented at the beginning of the school year.
Beginning Band [Grade 7]
This is a rigorous course for 7th grade students with no previous band experience. Beginning to intermediate level instruction in clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. Students will be expected to progress quickly on their instrument in order to join the 7th Grade Advanced Band after the first semester.
Students will learn self-discipline at the highest level by participating in band. Their social skills, communication skills, self-concept, cooperative talents, and creative mind will all be nurtured through their study in band. These life-skills will serve as an important foundation as they take on various responsibilities in their future.
Options regarding how to purchase and/or rent an affordable quality instrument will be presented at the beginning of the school year.
Advanced Band [Grade 7]
Must have completed one year of beginning band in the Stillwater Band Program OR a comparable band setting.
Admittance into this class is subject to director approval.
Students will continue to hone and perfect the skills learned in beginning band as they continue their journey in the Stillwater Band Program.
During this exciting year, students will transition their focus from individual musicianship to ensemble performance as they will perform at multiple concerts and contests throughout the year.
They will also have the opportunity to participate in solo and ensemble contest and all-region honor band auditions.
Beginning Orchestra [Grades 6 & 7]
Requirements for instrument purchase/rental, uniform and necessary equipment for class (shoulder rest or rock stop, tuner, cleaning cloth, rosin) will be addressed in August of the student's 6th grade year. At that time students are encouraged to rent an instrument from Oklahoma Strings, Tulsa Violin Shop, or a reputable on-line shop such as SharMusic or Robertson's Violins. School-owned instrument loans are possible on request.
Beginning level instruction in violin, viola, cello and bass for 6th grade students. No previous experience required.
Students will develop correct posture, hand position, bowing, care and maintenance of their instrument.
Identify notes and rests, clap, count and read rhythms, identify major and minor scales, chords and intervals.
Perform in group concerts and contests
Option of participating in solo/ensemble contests.
Students are required to purchase uniform and necessary equipment for class (shoulder rest or rock stop, pitch pipe or tuner, mute, clearing cloth, rosin).
Intermediate Orchestra [Grade 7]
Intermediate level instruction in violin, viola, cello, and bass for 6th and 7th grade students with at least one (1) year previous orchestral experience, private instruction, and/or permission of the instructor
Continued emphasis on correct posture, hand position, bowing care and maintenance of their instrument
Continued emphasis on notes and rests, rhythms, major and minor scales and chords and intervals, and develop vibrato
Continued emphasis on ensemble pitch, balance, blend, and tone quality characteristic of their instrument and the total ensemble
Learn to tune their instruments individually
Perform in large group concerts and contests
Option of participating in solo/ensemble contests and honor orchestras
Students are required to purchase a uniform and necessary equipment for class (shoulder rest or rock stop, tuner, mute, clearing cloth, rosin).
Cellos and basses are provided by the school
Exploratory Music [Grades 6 & 7]
Sing for enjoyment & awareness
Develop reading & rhythmic skills
Explore varied styles of music
Identify fundamentals of music
Learn about the history of Western music
Study famous compositions and composers
Perform in a large group concert
SMS Singers [Grades 6 & 7]
This year-long class is non-auditioned chorus for those 6th grade students who are interested in singing. Students in this class will have the opportunity to participate in Circle the State with Song Region C Honor State Choir, as well as other performances. Students will learn music reading and vocal techniques, while singing a variety of music and styles. The class is for the singer who wants to be challenged, while having fun! For 7th grade, students must audition and be selected before being enrolled in this course. Auditions will take place each spring for the upcoming school year.

Intro to Engineering [Grade 6]
Introduction to Engineering is an advanced course designed to give students an introduction to Engineering. Students will learn the design process, learn technical sketching, and work with professional CAD software in order to generate 3D computer models. The 3D computer models will be used to produce a 3D printed prototype of a student designed desktop novelty item. The students will also be introduced to robotics. Student will apply mathematics, study of gear ratios, and computer science concepts in order to design, build, and program robotics systems that complete a variety of functions.

Art [Grades 6 & 7]
Learn the elements of art, how to use them to create art, and how other artists used them in famous masterpieces.
Explore various techniques and media: paint, chalk, ink, oil pastels, etc.
Analyze and critique personal artwork as well as famous masterpieces.
Become familiar with various famous works of art, eras, and styles.
Opportunities to exhibit artwork and enter contests.
Spanish [Grades 6 & 7]
Explores basic aspects of the following topics:
Spanish alphabet
Classroom objects, colors and shapes
Exploration of Geography and Culture
Gain knowledge in research
Note organization skills
Gather new information and present findings to class
Learn about telling time, weather and seasons, the calendar, greetings, and family phrases
Reading a novel with vocabulary in Spanish “Esperanza Rising” by Pam Muñoz Ryan
7th Grade will introduce new vocabulary and continue to build on the culture and geography of Spanish-speaking countries.
Physical Education [Grades 6 & 7]
Instruction is related to the season and will include some but not all of the following:
Flag football, Volleyball, Basketball, Soccer, Ultimate Football, Ultimate Frisbee, Badminton, Wiffle Ball, Kickball, Team Handball, Fitness/Mental Health, Safety and Injuries, Growth and Development, Life Skills, Running/Stretching, and Dance/Zumba
Extended Studies [Grade 6]
This course replaces one elective class and requires district testing to qualify. Throughout the course, students will work through projects and self-guided assignments to strengthen the following skills:
Logical Thinking, Creative Problem Solving, Creativity Analysis, Critical Thinking, Thinking Fluency, Creative Writing, Creative Reasoning, Problem Solving, Working Independently, and Imaginative Thinking.
Musical Theater [Grade 7]
Students enrolled in the Musical Theatre class will concentrate on acting and musical theatre vocal technique. Students will experience an introduction to acting, vocal music, and performance technique. This course will provide opportunities for students to strengthen vocal ability, music reading skills, dance techniques, and acting. In addition, students will learn performance etiquette, communication skills, how to build an ensemble, and how to produce a quality musical theatre production in a fast-paced environment. Students must audition and be selected before being enrolled in this course.
Engineering [Grade 7]
Robotics is an advanced course designed to give students an opportunity to expand upon the robotics knowledge learned in Intro to Engineering. Students will use the design process to design, build, code and test robots to complete given tasks. Students will be introduced to coding various types of sensors and apply mathematics to properly code motors. Progression of robot design and work will be documented in an engineering notebook.
Medical Detectives [Grade 7]
In Medical Detectives students will investigate how doctors diagnose patients. Students will dissect a sheep brain, grow and treat bacteria with antibiotics, learn about the nervous system, and solve an outbreak case. Energy and the Environment focuses on environmental engineering. Students will study alternative energy sources in order to design and build working solutions using alternative energy sources to power their design. Students will also study heat transfer in order to design and build penguin huts that prevent the absorption of heat.
Computers [Grade 7]
Students will learn and demonstrate various computer skills while applying them to real world experiences. Computer fundamentals, word processing, web browsing, communicating online, presentation software, multimedia, databases, and spreadsheet units will be covered. Students will also practice coding and will fly drones using code.
Pioneer Prep [Grade 7]
How do you pick a career path when you’re not sure what’s even out there? This course allows you to begin exploring options in fields such as teaching, business, government, hospitality, health science, IT, and more! You’ll align your interests, wants, and needs to career possibilities, including the required education for each. Let’s find a pathway that works for you.
Yearbook [Grades 6 & 7]
This full-year course offers students an introduction to the basic elements of visual communication and the print world. Students will learn the fundamentals of photography as they document important events from the school year. Students will develop their pre-collegiate communication skills via reporting, writing, class discussions, presentations, and publications. Students will create the yearbook and a variety of narrative projects that show how photography and the written word combine to inform society.
Theatre Arts [Grade 6]
Theatre Arts will introduce students to the basic concepts of acting, public speaking and production. Students will participate in creative drama techniques to build confidence and trust, stimulate imagination, movement, and character development. In this class, we use games and activities that target public speaking skills and provide opportunities for students to gain trust and confidence in themselves. Students will have the opportunity to work in chroma keying and video editing to produce classroom drama/theatre works.
Creative Writing [Grade 6]
This course will explore a variety of different writing styles including: Poetry, Short Story, Novel, Memoir. Within these styles, we will address: Sentence Structure, Grammar, Novel Study/Reading, Story Formatting, Character Development, Rich Description, Plotting and Story Mapping, Tips and Tricks for Writers, Publishing and Cover Design.
Student Assistant [Grades 7]
Students selected for a student assistant position will be placed in one of three locations: library, office, or with a classroom teacher. Student aides MUST maintain good behavior and MUST remain eligible. Students who do not meet these requirements may be removed from their aide position.
