The journalism department consists of three courses:
1st block - Yearbook - 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.
2nd block - Plan Period - 10:30 to 12:05 p.m.
3rd block - Newspaper - 12:55 to 2:25 p.m.
3rd block - Journalism I - 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.

COURSE INFORMATION:
Journalism courses available at SHS are open to all students, however, the yearbook class consists mostly of seniors, the newspaper class is usually about 50/50 juniors and seniors, and the Journalism I class is designed with sophomores in mind. (But, more and more juniors and seniors are taking this course, too). They all fill up quickly at enrollment, so be sure you select them on your pre-enrollment form. (Please note: if you want to take YB or NP in BOTH fall and spring semesters, you MUST list them BOTH!)

EXPECTATIONS:
Students are expected to arrive on time for class and prepared to participate each day. Supplies needed are minimal as we do most of our work on computers provided in the classroom. It is important for all students to exhibit appropriate behavior in all classes, but the journalism classes require an additional amount of maturity and self-control. These students are entrusted with more freedom than in traditional classroom settings and, therefore, more responsibility. Yearbook and Newspaper staff members are allowed to leave campus at times in order to sell advertising to local businesses and must behave professionally.

GRADING POLICY:
The grading policy for all classes is per the student handbook, however, the yearbook and newspaper classes have additional requirements. Both are required to sell advertising for their productions. Another portion of their grade comes from group assignments. Students are encouraged to choose their groups and co-workers wisely.

LATE WORK / MAKE-UP WORK:
Per the student handbook, work missed due to an excused absence may be made up in the same number of days that the student missed, with no point deduction. Late work (work not turned in by the deadline, though the student was in attendance) may incur a deduction.
All work is assigned a due date because that is the only way to enter them into the Parent/Student Campus Portal, however, points are not deducted if turned in after that date for many assignments. Due dates are not "deadlines" ... because no one ever died from missing the due date. (Even the IRS will give some lenience). There are a few things that we do that absolutely have to be completed by a certain time, either to avoid a financial penalty from our printing companies, or simply based on the principles I am trying to expose students to: organization, time management, multi-tasking, problem-solving and personal responsibility.

HOMEWORK:
None of the journalism courses have "homework", in the traditional sense, however, students who do not wisely use the ample instructional time we have together will have to complete some assignments outside of the classroom. I believe it is far more effective for students to complete the assignments in the classroom, working together, under my supervision, than to attempt to do so at home, alone, trying to remember it all and then "figure it out". To view the assignments and due dates, go to the Parent Portal on the SPS website. I "open" the View one week at a time, so if you are planning an extended absence that is later in the semester, simply contact me and I will give you those assignments.
Yearbook Staff members (and sometimes Newspaper Staff members) will obviously have to contact local businesses for advertising contracts, complete interviews, and take photographs outside of class time. (We begin yearbook class before most of the businesses open each morning, so some lunchtime and/or after-school appointments may be necessary).
