Jubilee Special

On Friday 27th May we held a whole school celebration for Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee. In the morning, each year group looked at the key events of a given decade of the Queen's reign from the 1950s, right up to modern day. The children learnt about popular culture of the time, key events and significant milestones of the Queen's reign.

At lunch time we started by listening to the National Anthem and had an enormous celebration picnic lunch outside on the playground which had been wonderfully decorated by Mrs Barratt and her team. After lunch each year group took part in different games and activities from making crowns, having royal 'horse races', learning dances and much more.

In the lead up to the day, each year group completed their own special art work which was then displayed on a large display board in the church as part of their festivities. This board is now proudly on show in school, showcasing the fantastic work our children have completed in celebration of this historical event.

Below are some photos and videos of what we got up to.

Our Platinum Jubilee lunch

We had a celebration picnic lunch together in the playground. We started by listening to the National Anthem and had the tables and playground decorated with buting and red white and blue colours.

Jubilee learning

Across school, from Foundation to Y6, we looked at different time periods of Queen Elizabeth II's reign and also completed special art work to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee. Some of our learning was shared at the church as part of their celebrations.

The church posted about our work on their Facebook page and below are some photos of what we shared and will have displayed in school.

Last term, Foundation were lucky enough to have a visit from Sergeant Booth who came to tell the children all about his job in the infantry. Sergeant Booth discussed with the children his role as a guard for the Queen and his time in the army. He brought in all of his equipment for the children to have a look at. They even got the chance to use the equipment too. The children’s favourite was the bearskin. Thank you so much for your visit Sergeant Booth!

In KS1, we enjoyed a variety of activities linked to the Queen and the jubilee. This included; marching like the regimental guards, learning the National Anthem and playing a variety of sports.

Arts Week

As well as celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we have had a busy week celebrating the Arts at St Giles Academy. We have had the opportunity to take part in a variety of workshops and activities around this including: DJing, street dance, street art, beatboxing, drumming and drama and storytelling. Look out for more about this in next week's newsletter!

Safeguarding

As a school community we must remember that keeping our children safe is everyone's responsibility. We always appreciate your support and thank you for reporting concerns when you see or hear of incidents outside school.

Online safety

National Online Safety produce online help guides known as #wakeupewednesday to keep children safe online. This week's guide is about Virtual Reality.

Virtual reality (VR for short) has existed for decades, but it’s only in the last 10 years that the technology has really become publicly available. With VR’s rapid rise as a gaming and educational medium, there are plenty of unknowns regarding its use – for adults and children alike. Is it safe? How long should someone use VR for? How expensive is it? What’s clear is that VR is becoming ever more ubiquitous in everyday life: from companies using it for training to at-home fitness. Knowing what the technology is capable of is more useful than ever.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as physical accidents, premature exposure and eye strain.

National Online Safety have now produced an app with lots of useful advice, support and guides around being safe online. Find out more by going to https://info.nationalonlinesafety.com/mobile-app
