*Plant Life Cycle*

Read Aloud:

~ “The Tiny Seed” By: Eric Carle

~ “From Seed to Plant” By: Gail Gibbons

Language and Literacy: 

~ We will continue to teach the children how to write their names (uppercase and lowercase letters) and how to grip the pencil properly (3 Finger Hold) as they do it. 

~ We will continue various name recognition and fine motor activities as well.

~ We will continue to have a focus letter each week as we travel the alphabet from A-Z.  It is important to note that we will review the letter's phoneme(s), how to write it properly, and discuss whether the letter is a consonant or vowel, and chart words that begin with that letter. This week's letter we will be focusing on the letter, Tt. We will work on the recognition, formation, and signing of the letter.  

~ We will continue to expose the children to the Fundations alphabet cards and writing paper that they use in Kindergarten.

~ We will continue to practice our daily Heggerty language and literacy program to prepare for Kindergarten!

Science & Social Studies:

~The children will learn about the life cycle of plants, and what a plant needs to grow!

~ We will discuss the characteristics of and parts of a seed and plants.

Math:

~ The children will participate in plant/flower themed number recognition activities, sequencing, patterns, sorting, ten frame, graphing and counting activities.

~ The children will continue to practice copying/writing numbers 1-20 through various sensory activities. We will discuss how some numbers are even numbers, and other numbers are odd.   

~ We will continue counting in Spanish too!

Religion:

~ This week, we will celebrate Jesus’ resurrection! "On Good Friday, Jesus’ friends had very sad hearts. Jesus was put on the cross, His body stopped working, and He had to go to sleep in a quiet, dark cave called a tomb. His friends thought they had to say goodbye forever, and they cried… and then came the big moment…on Sunday morning—SURPRISE! God did something amazing! He used His big power to wake Jesus up. The heavy stone rolled away, and when His friends looked inside... the cave was empty! Jesus wasn't there. He was standing outside in the sunshine, alive and well!" We shout Alleluia!

Philosophy and Curriculum

Our philosophy is that through our teaching, we ensure that each child is loved, nurtured and safe while growing in all areas of development. Not only will the children learn academic skills but also a strong, age-appropriate understanding of our Catholic faith.  We are strong believers in implementing an emergent style of lesson plans early in the school year while we get to know each child’s area of interest and understanding. Throughout the school year there will be guided lessons that are individualized to meet each child's specific needs. 

Our curriculum is one that follows the West Virginia Early Learning Standards through the use of the state chosen, Creative Curriculum. Ongoing assessments and observations of the children are conducted during the school year. We believe that having open communication between teacher and families is needed to achieve a successful year for your child!  Parent/Teacher conferences will be held during the school year, in addition to these, we, Pre-K 4 Teachers, will make ourselves available to meet with you if you have further questions or concerns.
