You teach a set of sounds (see scope and sequence resources) one sound at a time and the formation of the sound. The same for the heart words. As sounds are learned you begin to put them together to create a word. eg Stage One (LLLL) m s f a p t c i. at bat mat pat pit mit This is blending and segmenting.
When all sounds and heart words and their formation are learned then there is a set of books to read.
It is systematic and repetitive to break the code!
Sound cards Heart word cards red card for sounds and heart words to give to students as they are introduced - one colour for sound and one colour for heart words -all 10x10cm approx
Magnetic letters and a mini magnet board
Mini whiteboards and markers or an exercise book and pen

Decoding/Encoding - reading and creating words made by known sounds
Dictation -as tamariki know some sounds you can start dictation. eg I pat the fat bat.
