LEARN
Purpose of an explanation text:
The writer's purpose is to explain how something works or state reasons for something. Explanations answer the questions of the 5 W's and How
Structure
Explanation writing usually has a logical sequence that enables the reader to build their understanding more easily.
Orientation – an opening statement/s that identifies the problem, place or issue
Body – points of explanation supported by examples or factual information
Ending – a closing statement/s that draws the writing to a decent conclusion, for example by summarising the main points
Language Features
often uses time vocabulary - e.g. first, next, following, once, then, finally etc.
the writing illuminates cause and effect
written in the 'timeless' present tense (are, turns, happens)
use of action verbs (falls, rises, changes)
Words expressing logical relationships between ideas (if ... then/because/so)
use of non-human participants (the sea, the mountains, the computers, the engine)
conjunctions (when, then, first, after this so)
What do you notice in this explanation?

CREATE
Create a poster or video of at least 5 things that must be present in an explanation text you need to cover both structure and language features and it needs to be in your own words.
SHARE
