No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. - Aesop
Goal: communicate and interpret locations and directions, using compass directions, distances, and grid references.
This week in maths you will learn to use mapping skills to communicate your location and measure distances.
Rescue Mission Ōnawe Pa
You are the warriors chosen by your Rangatira to lead a rescue mission. You are safe at home at Kaiapoi Pa but have heard news of your kinsmen in distress. Ōnawe Pa is under attack and you must get there as soon as possible to rescue those who are under threat and help fight against Te Rauparaha’s advancing war party. You have been given the following brief:
Find and plot your current location as a coordinate (Kaiapoi Pa) - where is this in relation to the centre of Ōtautahi?
Find and plot your destination as a coordinate (Ōnawe Pa) - where is this in relation to the centre of Ōtautahi?
You must measure distance between the two locations ( remember the roads we have today may not be your chosen path)
What is the most direct route from one place to the other
Include the compass directions both locations are from the centre of Ōtautahi
See if you can give the co-ordinates for St. Francis
EXTRA for experts: Measure the distance travelled by Sea if you were to choose to travel by Waka. Would you get there any faster than if you took the land route?
The following video, compass and mapping we do in our workshop should help you with your rescue mission. Remember time is of the essence!!!! He waka eke noa!
When you click the maps below to find your co-ordinates you must click the TIFF image file to zoom in on the image.
Use the rule "Along the corridor and up the stairs" to find your coordinate. It is the numbers in the bottom left hand corner that gives you the coordinate for that square. eg.7569 is the coordinate for Quail Island. Each square is 1cm which represents 5km in real world distance. Happy Mapping

Share a screenshot of the map you have created with the route you decided to take along with the coordinates for the specific locations on your blog with a short description of how you did this task.
