No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. - Aesop
Goal 1 : Use appropriate scales, devices, and metric units to accurately measure length
Goal 2: Use side or edge lengths to find the perimeters of rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles.
Goal 3: Use a variety of strategies to calculate the area of rectangles, parallelograms, and triangles.
This week in maths you will creating your own Pā. You can choose how you wish to showcase this - google drawings, Minecraft, a physical Pā, a model etc.
However, you must all create a google drawing or a physical drawing in your maths book that shows the design of your Pā. This google drawing must contain the following;
appropriate units of length to show the size of the Pā (Goal 1).
The perimeter of the Pā must be included (Goal 2).
The area of various parts of your Pā must be stated (Goal 3).
Check out the following information surrounding these goals and how to apply them to your Pā planning for the week.
Units of length
What is Perimeter?
What is area?
Goal: communicate and interpret locations and directions, using compass directions, distances, and grid references.
This week in maths you will learn to use mapping skills to communicate your location and measure distances.
Rescue Mission Ōnawe Pa
You are the warriors chosen by your Rangatira to lead a rescue mission. You are safe at home at Kaiapoi Pa but have heard news of your kinsmen in distress. Ōnawe Pa is under attack and you must get there as soon as possible to rescue those who are under threat and help fight against Te Raupraha’s advancing war party. You have been given the following brief:
Find and plot your current location as a coordinate (Kaiapoi Pa) - where is this in relation to the centre of Ōtautahi?
Find and plot your destination as a coordinate ((Ōnawe Pa) - where is this in relation to the centre of Ōtautahi?
You must measure distance between the two locations ( remember the roads we have today may not be your chosen path
What is the most direct route from one place to the other
Include the compass directions both locations are from the centre of Ōtautahi
EXTRA for experts: Measure the distance travelled by Sea if you were to choose to travel by Waka. Would you get there any faster than if you took the land route.
The following video, compass and mapping we do in our workshop should help you with your rescue mission. Remember time is of the essence!!!! He waka eke noa!
Look at the map which I have glued together to get a better picture of the overall picture. Use the rule "Along the corridor and up the stairs" to find your coordinate. It is the numbers in the bottom left hand corner that gives you the coordinate for that square. eg.7569 is the coordinate for Quail Island. Each square is 1cm which represents 1km in real world distance. Happy Mapping
